This is the second quilt I made.  You can see that there is no fancy top stitching.  Each square is hand stitched with wool on all four corners and the middle which is then tied in a knot on top.  The last picture you can see the little stitches in the back.  I find this way faster then machine top stitching as I can do it while watching TV.  For the first few quilts I also cheated and used a good quality flat bedsheet as the back (this one is flannel) .  That way I knew what size to make them

I'm looking on ebay at machines, and do I need one specifically for quilting? Because I'm seeing some that have that option, and some that don't. And is Singer better than Brother? It's like reading computer specs to me.  Monkey Devil!

I have my old Singer Treadle machine, one that was my Mom's from Sears ( I think a Kenmore) and my newest is a husky portable.  I love my Singer treadle and my Husky for quilting because the space between where the needle goes up and down and the body of the machine is far larger than the Kenmore.  If you want to top quilt with your machine that space between the needle and the body of the machine makes a huge difference as you have to squish a lot of fabric between there as you are quilting.  I have never owned a machine with a quilting option so not sure what that means or does.  I am pretty sure Green Eyes can answer you on that as she makes gorgeous quilts.

I wouldn't have thought about the space. Sigh, see how knowledgeable I'm not? I did send a link to Green Eyes for one from Walmart that she said will be fine. I'm just going to get that one, and start learning with it. And I saw a lot of accessories that I need. Was gonna get me a new laptop for Christmas, but I'm gonna do this instead!

Wow! This is done by hand? I see what you mean now with the knots. I had one given to me awhile ago, and it had the yarn knots like that. Is that what's it called when done on a machine, top quilting?

I don't think I'd be able to do while watching tv tho. Get too involved with what I'm watching and would sew my fingers together! Nice cheat, btw!  Monkey Devil!

The squares are sewn together with a sewing maching, but the wool stitches are done by hand.  Oh lord I would never have the patience to do a quilt by hand!  Not even the top stitching.
