Gizzie here is the top for the jean quilt I am working on. It will look way better when it is together with the batting and backing and quilted.
I love denim quilts.
They are heavy too.I made sidekick one.

I was going to ask if you minded showing a picture of it. I do like that a lot! Now my ignorance of quilting...What is batting?
Its the fluffy stuffing in the middle, comes in a bag or a roll. i think it what she's referring to
What Scarey said! It comes in a big roll from the fabric shop. You have to decide what size quilt you are making, single, double, queen, king, and then buy the correct batting as they come in different widths as well as different weights (thin to thick). Personally, I would never make a quilt smaller than a queen. Even when the kids had single beds all the quilts I made them were Queen so they can use then as they grow up.

You have a lot of patience making the larger quilts.
One full size quilt and I was about crazy.

There is really not a lot of extra work to get to queen size when you compare how much work it takes to make a single quilt.

This is true.I decided it was best not to have my little buddy sitting right with me.I can not talk and sew at the same time.

I've always wondered what that stuff was called! And I was going to say I'll probably start by making a twin, but what you said makes much more sense! I think my very first one will be a doll baby one tho.
I was just looking at sewing machines at Walmart and I guess that will be the first thing am gonna need. I really can't wait to start this!

I taught myself how to quilt from a old Singer how to quilt book. My first 5 were truly patchwork quilts that had the squares tied rather than machine quilted and they are still my favourites. I only started do patterns when I decided I was going to make each of the kids a quilt and they all picked out the patterns.

I'm looking on ebay at machines, and do I need one specifically for quilting? Because I'm seeing some that have that option, and some that don't. And is Singer better than Brother? It's like reading computer specs to me.

I've never seen one where the squares are tied, that sounds neat! I think that's the idea in my mind, it being a patchwork one. By patterns, do you mean the fabric they picked?
I did look briefly online at a quilting for beginners, but most of the language they used as far as functions and stitches, I was clueless! Were you able to pick it up fairly quickly? I guess it helps having a little knowledge about sewing to begin with?

I have my old Singer Treadle machine, one that was my Mom's from Sears ( I think a Kenmore) and my newest is a husky portable. I love my Singer treadle and my Husky for quilting because the space between where the needle goes up and down and the body of the machine is far larger than the Kenmore. If you want to top quilt with your machine that space between the needle and the body of the machine makes a huge difference as you have to squish a lot of fabric between there as you are quilting. I have never owned a machine with a quilting option so not sure what that means or does. I am pretty sure Green Eyes can answer you on that as she makes gorgeous quilts.

Hang on and I will take another picture.
Yes I had been sewing for years before I decided to try a quilt. My first project was actually a quilted pillow cover, no batting. For me the challenge was the correct order to pin everything together and then flip it so that the batting ended up in the middle and the right side of the quilt top and back were on the outside.
