HOUSTON - A long time Houston Police Department detective describes a rapist on the loose as "cruel" and "sadistic."

The man robbed and sexually assaulted two elderly women within the last four weeks. Both attacks happened in the Sharpstown area of southwest Houston, leading police to believe the same man is responsible.

The first attack happened on Nov. 23 inside a house in the 7200 block of Tanager near Beechnut and Fondren.

An 80-year-old woman opened her garage door to prepare to leave for a physical therapy appointment. She had just had hip replacement surgery. That's when a man confronted her in the garage.

"He immediately grabbed her, forced her back into the house, he bound her and robbed her and then he sexually assaulted her," said Detective Keith McMurtry.

He also stole her Gold Honda. Police have a picture of the car abandoned at a nearby strip center on Hillcroft.

The second attack, which police describe as a more calculated one, happened Dec. 21 in the 5800 block of Sugar Hill Drive.

A man confronted a 64-year-old woman in an upstairs bedroom, robbed her and sexually assaulted her. Investigators believe the attacker began watching his victim the night before.

"The earmarks of this second offense are very similar in that he was needlessly cruel," said McMurtry.

The detective went on to say, "He's the meanest I've had dealings with in a very long time, and I'm hoping I have the opportunity in the near future to meet with him and ask him why he's so damn mean."

The rapist is believed to be in his 30s or 40s. He has a large, athletic build and is clean cut. In the first attack he was wearing a white buttoned down shirt with the word "Randalls" stitched on the pocket. Police believe someone may recognize a phrase the attacker used several times while he was inside the first victim's home.

"When he asked her if there was anyone else in the house, she said no and he said, 'Don't be fibbin' me,'" asid McMurtry.

Detectives also noticed the stolen car's radio dial was tuned to Praise 92.1 FM, a gospel station. The victim says she never listened to that station.

"We believe he probably conducts himself as being a good, nice Christian like person," said McMurtry.

Representatives from 92.1 say they plan to meet with HPD next week to see how they can use the airwaves to help the investigation.

McMurtry is eager to reward the person who can lead police to a suspect. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
