HOUSTON - A registered nurse is accused of neglecting to help or treat her son after she witnessed her boyfriend allegedly beating him.
Lois Renee Wiltz, a nurse in Harris County, has been charged with injury to a child by omission, Harris County District Attorney's Office Spokeswoman Donna Hawkins said. Her boyfriend, Carlton Prejean, is charged with two counts of injury to a child on allegations he abused Wiltz's 12-year-old son, as well as another 1-year-old in the home.
Wiltz's son told investigators his mom would idly watch him get severely beaten by an extension cord since he was about 8 or 9 years old, according to a probable cause document obtained by FOX 26 News.
The whippings would leave the child's back with severe scars and open wounds that Wiltz allegedly never treated or sought to treat by other medical professionals, according to the document.
The son also alleges that his mother even once told him to change a bloodied shirt, according to the document.
The probable document states the child was abused between October 2005 and November. The extension cord beating allegedly occurred in November while his mother was inside the home.
The child's second cousin, who also is his basketball coach, told investigators that the child had complained about the beatings, according to the document. When the coach confronted Wiltz about the allegations, she pulled her son from the basketball team and prohibited the child from seeing the cousin.
On Dec. 3, another cousin said that the child had called her and begged her to pick him up from school because he couldn't tolerate the beatings, according to the document.
Wiltz initially denied the allegations, stating she had kept the door shut during the beatings, according to the document. However, she allegedly recanted her statements, saying that she had intervened in the whippings by "hollering" at her boyfriend.
A total of three children lived at the home, Hawkins said.
It's unclear whether Wiltz or Prejean have been arrested.
But if Prejean is convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
