Amber alert issued for runaway teen mother who allegedly took baby

Story Discussion Image (2) MARTIN J. KIDSTON Independent Record | Posted: Tuesday, January 12, 2010 5:50 pm | No Comments Posted

HELENA — The Helena Police Department continued looking today for a missing 15-year-old girl allegedly ran away from the Florence Crittenton Home with her 2-month-old son late Monday night.

Local law enforcement agencies upgraded a Missing and Endangered Person Alert to an Amber Alert Tuesday as the search continued for Alithea Brown and her son, Dezmond Cortez.

“Right now, we have no reason to think the mother would harm the boy,” said Helena Police Department Lt. Corey Livesay. “It’s simply her age and that she’s unsupported by any other means with an infant.”

Livesay said Brown is the child’s noncustodial parent and is considered a runaway. She was reported missing from Florence Crittenton Home at about 11 p.m. Monday.

“We think her possible destinations are the Missoula area or Washington, but we don’t know,” he said. “We have information that she could still be in the Helena area.”

Barb Burton, executive director of Florence Crittenton Home, confirmed the information distributed by the Helena Police Department.

Because of federal regulations, Burton could not further discuss Brown’s case, or say why she was staying at the home for pregnant and parenting teens.

“Most of the girls who are with us are placed by various state agencies, which would mean they couldn’t necessary leave on their own accord,” Burton said. “Our concern is for the mother and her baby and their safety.”

Helena police described Brown as 5 feet, 1 inch tall, 119 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. She was last seen wearing a maroon University of Montana Grizzlies sweatshirt with navy blue sweatpants. Her date of birth is listed as Oct. 10, 1994.

Her infant son has brown hair, weighs around 15 pounds and measures 22 inches long.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Helena Police Department at 442-3233.

This is really scarey, with the mother only 15 years old and baby Dezmond only 2 months old.     I hope they are found quickly and brought to safety.   an angelic monkey
