San Antonio police say they're investigating the case of an Arizona baby missing for more than a month as a kidnapping and homicide, allowing them to search for a dead body.

Police Chief William McManus said officers will search a landfill for the body of 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson once weather permits, adding that he still hopes authorities will find the boy alive.

Gabriel was last seen December 26 in San Antonio with his mother, 23-year-old Elizabeth Johnson. She was arrested Dec. 30 in Florida and has been charged in Arizona with kidnapping, child abuse and custodial interference.

Elizabeth Johnson is at the 4th Avenue Jail in Phoenix. She's the only one who knows where Gabriel is, but she isn't talking. That's why everyone from police to family members are looking for the baby.

Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary of Tempe, said he was  disappointed that police were treating the case as a homicide. The case drew national attention when McQueary pleaded for his son's safe return on national television.

Elizbeth told Logan that she killed Gabriel and threw his body into a trash bin.

Heavy rain is delaying the search in Texas, but they plan on continuing soon.

Meanwhile, Gabriel's father isn't giving up.  He said Saturday, "We think Gabriel is out there and alive."

I'm just wondering, if Gabriel was given up to some underground adoption agency, wouldn't a person bring the baby forward? I mean why would one want to live looking behind their shoulder all the time, wondering if someone will report them? I don't get this.

I'm confused over all this, I would imagine that the parents wouldn't want to lose the money, but at the same time how could they keep the baby away from his dad? Does a person really want a baby that bad, that you are willing to do this? Are you willing to worry for the rest of your life that someone is going to knock at your door and demand the baby?

I don't think I worded that right. I mean do the perspective parents know the agency is some kind of underground adoption place or do they think it is on the up and up? How do they find these types of places?
The only questionable adoption I have ever heard of was one done out of Mexico. A lawyer told them about a baby who was born to a mexican mother who couldn't afford another baby and the baby was sick. They adopted the child and had a heck of a time bringing the baby into the US. Looking back, I wonder if it was this type of adoption?

There are people who knowingly and willingly go along with an illegal adoption - it can happen just depends on how much money you are willing to pay.  If they did this knowing it was underground they will never come forward with Gabriel IMO.

I'm seeing it a couple ways.... .They spent thousands and that is playing a role or 2. he is underground with ppl who at any cost will NOT reveal they have him. He will be moved if there is any insight that LE is getting close and they will risk everything to "protect" him because they have decided he is in great danger if found. I have a 3. but my head is so confused right now I forgot....duh

Baby Gabriel's dad believes his son was adopted in S.A. (with video)

Baby Gabriel's father says two locations in San Antonio where Elizabeth Johnson and Gabriel were last spot spotted lead him to believe that the baby was adopted.

Logan McQueary says the first spot is the Homegate Hotel, where Johnson stayed. The Mcqueary family says they've talked to adoption experts, who say that the hotel is a well-known location in adoption circles.

Agencies put girls up here for meetings with families.

The second clue that baby Gabriel may have been adopted is that Johnson and Gabriel were spotted on surveillance footage outside the Six Flags on one of the last days the baby was seen.

Despite these clues, the San Antonio Police Department plans to search the landnfill for the baby's body as soon as the weather cooperates.

So if you adopt a baby in an underground adoption scheme, then you just move around and keep underground for the rest of your life? Even with a high profile case like this? And what does underground actually mean, I'm really ignorant with all this.

I don't know, I would suppose they lay low until the child changes? EJ said that didn't she, they said they would hide him until he was a bit older? I have heard of this underground thing before but do not know very much about it either.
