Sheriff Arpaio: 'Elizabeth Johnson Isolated'

PHOENIX -- Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Wednesday that Elizabeth Johnson's public persona is very different from her demeanor behind bars.

"She's been quiet, cooperative, not a problem in our jail. Maybe she's got a dual personality," said Arpaio.

Johnson is accused of kidnapping her son Gabriel, and as CBS 5 News first showed in her text messages to Gabriel's father, she can be vicious. She texted that she killed Gabriel, and typed such phrases as "I'll email you the location of dead Gabriel's little blue body."

But in the Estrella Jail, Johnson has little opportunity for trouble, Arpaio said.

"We have her in a separate cell, isolated from other prisoners, for her own safety. She can come out once, one hour, to take a shower by herself," said Arpaio.

Arpaio said Johnson is decked out in the traditional pink underwear and striped uniform. She is allowed visitors, but she gets no special treatment.

When it comes to her trial, the sheriff compared her case to others in Maricopa County where suspects were charged with murder without the victim's body every being discovered.

"You know, I think there's only about four cases in history, and we have two of them. The David Anthony case where he's on death row. We have another one right now, waiting to be extradited, that we investigated here, without the body," said Arpaio.

But until that day comes, Sheriff Joe Arpaio has Elizabeth Johnson on a tight leash.

"She hasn't been causing any problems, but you never know," said Arpaio.

Child Advocate: Landfill Search Long Overdue

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- San Antonio police have still not said whether or not they will search a landfill in their quest to find 8-month-old Valley boy Gabriel Johnson who has missing for more than a month.

Mark Palmer, the executive director of Jessica's Law Now, a child advocacy group, said the landfill is one of the first places investigators should have searched.

"It should have been done right away, immediately," said Palmer.

Gabriel's mom, Elizabeth Johnson, took him from Arizona to San Antonio and did not return, police said. The boy's father, Logan McQueary said he got a text message saying she had killed him and put him in the trash.

Elizabeth was seen leaving San Antonio on a bus to Florida by herself. Gabriel was nowhere in sight.

Authorities arrested Elizabeth in Miami and returned her to Arizona to face charges of kidnapping and custodial interference.

"Once they did locate her, they should have gone back and started looking at not only the dumpsters and all of the areas that she was in, but also a radius that she covered and that would include landfills," said Palmer.

Elizabeth later changed her story and told CBS 5 News she had given Gabriel away to a couple she met in a San Antonio park. Tempe police are handling the initial investigation dealing with the kidnapping, while the San Antonio police investigation is a missing person’s case. The FBI has been involved since the beginning, supporting both investigations.

Managers of the Tessman Road Landfill in San Antonio said they are standing by ready to help police. A spokeswoman for the company confirmed that they are using their expertise in managing landfills to help police.

Peg Mulloy said landfills are highly engineered and well planned out.

“Things are so well engineered that we can hone in on a date and a neighborhood,” said Mulloy, referring to locating a specific cell of trash in the landfill. Mulloy confirmed that waste mangers at the landfill have identified a possible search cell based on information provided to them by police.

Palmer believes the delay in the search could be blamed on manpower and funding.

“That is a very big undertaking, and when you go in there, you have to go through quite an ordeal,” said Palmer.

Palmer believes too many parents of missing children don’t know whether their kids are dead or alive.

“We need to find this child. We need to find the facts that lead to what happened to this child in San Antonio,” said Palmer.

**in this video they report Gabriel was last seen at a HOTEL on Dec 26 not Raymond Russell Park. There have been conflicting reports about the park just like there have been conflicting reports about Victoria TX and I am seriously wondering if they were intentionally thrown out to the media by the Smith's to create a diversion now.

Landfill cordons off area for possible search for Baby Gabriel

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Managers of a San Antonio landfill have identified an area that might be searched for the body of an Arizona baby missing for about a month.

But San Antonio police said Wednesday they were not searching the landfill and wouldn't say if one is planned. They cited the integrity of their investigation into the disappearance of 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson of Tempe, Ariz.

Tempe police have said they hope that Gabriel is still alive.

Spokeswoman Peg Mulloy of Phoenix-based Republic Services says part of the firm's Tessman Road Landfill is cordoned off. She says landfill managers identified where police may look based on where and when Gabriel was last seen on Dec. 26.

His mother, 23-year-old Elizabeth Johnson, was later arrested in Florida and is charged in Arizona with kidnapping, child abuse and custodial interference.

Thanks for posting that video Nor Rose...I had not seen all of it before either. It makes me sick on my stomach to see Tammi or her post anymore. I hate to say it but I think they need to go ahead and search the landfill. I don't think Gabriel made it out of SA alive. Poor baby.

'Optimism' rapidly diminishing that Baby Gabriel will be found alive

TEMPE - A source very close to the investigation into the disappearance of Baby Gabriel tells 3TV's Mike Watkiss that "optimism is rapidly diminishing" among local law offices that Gabriel will be found alive.

Detectives in Arizona are working very closely with law enforcement in Texas, according to our source, as the focus of the investigation turns to a landfill in San Antonio, Texas.

The source tells 3TV portions of the landfill have now been cordoned off in possible preparation for a full-blown search of the areas in question. The cordoned-off areas are believed to be the locations where trash from the two motels where mom Elizabeth Johnson stayed during her time in Texas would have been deposited.

The source tells Watkiss that a K-9 has been used to search the cordoned-off areas, but a full-blown shovel-and-rake dig in the areas has not yet been undertaken.

The source tells Watkiss that Jack and Tammi Smith, the Scottsdale couple who at one point planned to adopt Gabriel, remain persons of interest in the case.

In watching that video I just noticed that the highchair pad is a match to one of the car seats we saw in pcitures. Do they have seats that convert to highchairs now as well?

That is a question I have been asking since this started. They were saying that EJ and Gabriel were seen at the park. Who saw them at the park? Or is this more of Tammi's BS? Did the maids who brought around towels and clean linens interact with baby Gabriel? Was Gabriel seen in the car with EJ at any time like a drive through window?

I think the second photo shows the highchair up close (not a car seat) because if you look at the fabric on the lower right(behind the chair) you will see its the same pattern fabric as in the couch shown in that first photo.

I think the second photo shows the highchair up close (not a car seat) because if you look at the fabric on the lower right(behind the chair) you will see its the same pattern fabric as in the couch shown in that first photo.

Yup.  We had just confused the one image of Gabriel in the cute animal print as being in a car seat last thread.
