Tammi Smith arrested in Baby Gabriel case

A woman at the center of an investigation involving missing 9-month-old Gabriel Johnson was arrested Tuesday morning in connection to the case, Tempe police announced.

Tammi Smith, 37, of Scottsdale, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit custodial interference, custodial interference and forgery, according to information from Tempe police.

Smith was arrested at 11:10 a.m. at her residence in north Scottsdale, police said.

Smith and her husband, Jack Smith, who have been in the national media spotlight involving the story of Gabriel Johnson, were once interested in adopting the child. And as the investigation evolved, the couple was named “persons of interest” in the case. Police believe the Smiths are withholding information that could lead them to the whereabouts of the boy.

Gabriel was last seen in a motel room on Dec. 26 in San Antonio, where his mother, Elizabeth Johnson, took him in the midst of a custody battle in mid-December. On Dec. 27, Johnson told her estranged boyfriend and the baby’s father, Logan McQueary, through a cell phone call and text message that she killed the baby.

Johnson, 23, of Tempe, was arrested on Dec. 30 in Miami Beach, Fla. at a youth hostel without the child and was extradited to Arizona last month.

Johnson also told an FBI investigator that she gave the baby to a couple in a park in San Antonio, and then later said she gave the baby to a couple inside the motel room before signing adoption papers.

Johnson, who was charged with kidnapping, custodial interference and conspiracy to commit custodial interference, is being held in Maricopa County’s Estrella Jail on a $1.1 million cash bond.

Johnson remains uncooperative with authorities in revealing the whereabouts of the child, according to Tempe police.

Tammi Smith is being transported to the Tempe City Jail, and later will be booked into a Maricopa County jail, police said.

Jack Smith, who was contacted by the Tribune on Tuesday morning, wouldn’t immediately comment.

Baby Gabriel Investigator Jay J. Armes Puts Heavyweight Investigative Team Together

Among the numerous leads that Armes and his investigative team will look at is the Wisconsin woman who posted on the Internet that she adopted a baby Gabriel in San Antonio, Texas. When called on it, she said the baby was two weeks old— a statement that Armes thinks is untrue. Armes raised the subject of underground adoption and baby brokers. "They sell the kids in Mexico," said Armes, who has recovered over 100 kidnapped children. He added that human traffickers get '$25,000 and up for a kid'. Armes raised the subject of Jack and Tammi Smith. He stated, "It's odd that the Smiths [tried to] adopt a child who then becomes missing."

This experienced investigator thinks our "Beth" was lying.  Interesting.

I hadn't let go of this "Beth" thing either. I am not satisfied with what we were told regarding her either. I still think it was way to ironic. I wish we could see proof that rules "Beth's" newly adopted child out but understand the privacy issues if it is found that Beth is telling the truth.

IMO, I think Yami is just after ratings as a investigative reporter. I dont think she has anything personal connection with Tammi.

If Gabriel's father needs money to help with expenses (loss of wages etc), why hasn't Tammi stepped up to help him? She is "all about" helping those in need right?

Also, I would bet all my bananas this "witness" that saw EJ with a couple and dark headed man is a maid from the hotel (thought I saw something with a maid also) or the babysitter. (Yami did have contact with this sitter) I hope it would be the babysitter because I think she is the most truthfull of all the characters we have seen so far. Just my opinion of course....

July -  Logan alleged, she became enraged when he didn't return home from work on time and took a knife to his clothing, the couch and the baby crib. She broke dishes and took a cooking pan and smashed the TV while the baby was in the Tempe apartment.

Dec 9: Eliz calls Logan at work and tells him she wants him to relinquish his paternal rights so she can give Gabriel up for adoption. He refuses. Eliz takes Gabriel to the Smiths, then calls LE & says Logan has taken Gabriel & she doesn't know where Gabriel is. Gabriel found 6 hours later at the Smiths.  A Tempe detective at the Smiths when Gabriel is found sees the papers the Smiths have drawn up about temporary guardianship. Gabriel spends 8 days with the Smiths.

I know you didn't kill him, but the police don't know that. There just need to verify he's not dead or hurt and you can live the rest of your life, not having to hide anymore!!! All you have to do is take a long drive and see a cop on the side of the road in a city and give him the paper and ask him to call her to va...rify you two are safe. You don't need to tell him why....As one of the officers said, you are not in trouble, you have the right to take your own child. But it's like having a parking ticket and robbing the bank to pay your parking ticket. If you never paid that parking ticket, you wouldn't be in trouble...But if you do an armed robbery at the bank they will send out a Nationwide search for you like they will in a few days if you don't show that he is safe. But it needs to be verified through a police officer in order to stop it from going to the FBI.

OTHERWISE: They are starting a Homicide Investigation! What that means is: Right now (today), your not in trouble. Your one of millions of mothers that leaves the state to keep her child safe from the horrible father. It's NOT kidnapping! You have every right to take your own child. You can even look on Public Reco...rds, there is NO warrent out for you....BUT, because of what you said, if you don't do this in the next few days, it will turn into a Murder Investigation and Detective Ramirez can no longer help.
