Police to search landfill for baby's body

SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Police in San Antonio say they plan to search a landfill for the body of a 9-month-old boy who vanished the day after Christmas.

Gabriel Johnson's disappearance now is being investigated as a homicide, rather than a missing person's case, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Saturday at a news conference.

McManus did not say what caused police to reclassify the case.

The baby last was seen with his mother, Elizabeth Johnson, who was charged with kidnapping, child abuse and custodial interference.

Johnson allegedly told the boy's father Logan McQueary of Tempe, Ariz., that she killed Gabriel, put him in a diaper bag and threw it in a San Antonio trash bin, police said. She later told a television station she gave the boy to a couple at a San Antonio park.

Police said they planned to search San Antonio's Tessman Road landfill as soon as heavy rain let up, the San Antonio Express-News reported Sunday.

"Hopefully nothing will turn up in the landfill," McManus said. "Hopefully we'll find him alive."

Police In Texas Investigate Infant’s Disappearance As A Homicide

SAN ANTONIO (February 7, 2010)—Police in San Antonio say they’re investigating the case of missing Arizona infant Gabriel Johnson as a kidnapping and homicide.

The 8-month-old has been missing for more than a month.

 San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said officers will search a landfill for the infant’s body once weather permits, although he says he still hopes authorities will find the infant alive.

Gabriel was last seen Dec. 26 in San Antonio with his mother, Elizabeth Johnson, 23, who was arrested Dec. 30 in Florida.

She has been charged in Arizona with kidnapping, child abuse and custodial interference.

Gabriel's father, Logan McQueary of Tempe, Ariz., told The Associated Press that he was disappointed that police were treating the case as a homicide.

The case drew national attention when McQueary pleaded for his son's safe return on national TV.

"We think Gabriel is out there and alive,” he said.

When that nut Tammi Smith says that she hopes Satan doesn't touch Gabriel, I think she's a bit too late since Tammi's  already touched him.  It is she who set in motion the entire episode with EJ leaving Tempe, if not at her suggestion then certainly with her approval. IMO it is precisely because of Tammi Smith that Gabriel is missing.  If she were not so determined to prevent Gabriel being in his father's custody, even though she knew nothing about Logan except what EJ told her, he would not be missing and Logan would have him today. Tammi should have stuck to her enemas and not meddled in Gabriel's life.  I hold her largely responsible for Gabriel's fate.  She preaches about God but has no concept of Christianity except as it aids her in attaining her goals. I find her completely disgusting.

Private Investigator Takes Up Missing Baby Search (with video)

PHOENIX -- A high-profile private investigator has launched his own search for Gabriel Johnson, the 8-month-old baby who was kidnapped by his non-custodial mother and hasn't been seen since December 26.

The well-known detective says he usually charges $250,000 to a million to take a case -- but after hearing of Gabriel's story, he decided to search for him free of charge.

"We've got about 175 years of experience concentrating on this case," says private investigator Jay J. Armes. His team of detectives is assembled across Texas and Mexico searching for baby Gabriel.

Armes has been a private eye for more than 40 years, based out of El Paso, Texas. He's known for his trademark prosthetic arms -- he lost both of his hands in a childhood accident.

Armes believes he can bring baby Gabriel home. "I've had about 150 underground kidnappings that I've worked on and recovered," he says.

He's criticizing the San Antonio Police Department for the way they've handled the case. On Saturday, police announced they're opening a homicide investigation into the baby's disappearance, so they can search a landfill for his body.

"That is a cop out, because you just don't do that to parents of a child that is missing."

Gabriel's father Logan McQueary has traveled to San Antonio to search for his son. He's retracing Elizabeth Johnson's steps. Back in December, Johnson, Gabriel's mother, took off with him from Tempe to San Antonio. That's where Gabriel was last seen six weeks ago.

Over the weekend, McQueary met with San Antonio Police to talk about his son's case. Armes says that meeting was a disappointment.

"They just wanted a photo op so that they could not be caught with egg in their faces. You open the file and there was zero there was nothing," says Armes.
