immy Carter's Li'l Ol' Stink Tank

INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY

Posted 1/2/2007

Ethics: Jimmy Carter says he's just being fair-minded by continuously condemning Israel. Meanwhile, his Carter Center draws ever more money from anti-Israel sources. Follow the money.

The ex-president's irritating opinions on Mideast matters are one thing. But the funding of his Atlanta think tank by big-money, state-linked Arab sources is quite another — and points to a conflict of interest.

According to the Carter Center Web site's 2004-05 annual report — the most recent available — the center has received "in excess of $1 million" from characters like Prince Al-Walid bin Talal.

Bin Talal, you might recall, is the Saudi prince who insultingly offered $20 million to New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in the smoldering ruins of the World Trade Center. The cash was held out not because the prince cared about terrorism but to rub in that the attack was really a byproduct of the Palestine conflict.

The streetwise Giuliani, who once threw Yasser Arafat out of a New York theater, wasn't fooled by bin Talal's power play and told him to keep his dirty money to himself. Giuliani smelled the quid pro quo and wasn't a man who could be bought.

Carter looks a little different. His new book, "Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid" lays all the blame on Israel for the Palestinian conflict in an interpretation worthy of a Cairo coffee shop. It is so extreme — and so seemingly out of character — that a top staffer at the Carter Center resigned in disgust.

It may be easy to dismiss Carter's nutty statements about Israel as the ranting of a bitter man in his twilight years. But it's not so easy to look the other way as Arab cash flows into the Carter Center from people known to demand something in return. It is worth noting that the center's anticipated contributions receivable and Carter's anti-Israeli diatribes have both increased dramatically.

Carter's foundation has a $200 million endowment, according to Rachel Ehrenfeld, an expert on terrorism, writing in the Washington Times, and the center's own 2004-05 statement says it took in $172 million in donations, with some as high as $25 million.

Fat cats who've given $1 million since the center's founding in 1982 (and in the hazy disclosures we don't know how much more) include the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the Saudi Fund for Development and the Government of the United Arab Emirates.

Among individuals who donated more than $100,000 in 2004-05, there is His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said of Oman, in addition to bin Talal. Among listed "founders" of the center are the king of Saudi Arabia, BCCI scandal banker Agha Hasan Abedi and Arafat pal Hasib J. Sabbagh.

All of these contributors have virulently anti-Israel elements, and most have medieval records of opposing and obstructing democracy in their own countries. Maybe someday, in one of those softball interviews he gives, Carter will be asked to reconcile what he supposedly stands for with those from whom he gets his money.

He just represents what is so wrong with things.... personally, to me his BS was much worse than Nixon's... but that is just my humble opinion.... and I guarantee that Carter will never, ever be really examined for all the stupidity he took to office....

like boycotting the Olympics.... oh yeah that really hurt.  He should be ashamed of himself....

ITA mrs. red.  He needs to go home and stop meddling because he makes no sense in the positions he takes.

I think term and age limits might be appropriate for every office.... and of course if there could just be a media outlet that just REPORTS.... not interjecting all their biases that would go a long, long way....

Nah, I think all would be solved with election lotteries, just like jury duty.

If you can qualify for jury duty you can qualify to hold office.

Carnut....an election is a type of lottery. You never know who will show up for the elected position......the person we saw on the campaign trail, or the person who owes everybody a political favor.

It's always a gamble.

but my point is that once elected... Good grief... after a certain amount of time they need to go.... one example... Byrd and on the otherside, Thurman before he passed away....

they were there far too long... and I don't think keeping the same people if office serves us well.... but once they are in, they just figure out how to stay!

Well, now, primary's might be considered lotteries, but just barely.

To be a political parties candidate is to already to have won the parties 'lottery' I guess. Although to get into a primary takes a lot of 'pull' and 'connections', just what I consider is 'wrong' with the political game.

Then the real election is just a horse race to see which horse wins, not quite the same in my book as chosing randomly from the entire population.

Notice that many of Carter's supporters, researchers and heretofore minions are bailing and admitting that not only is Carter a liar, he is also a puppet of the Muslims.  We would probably not be in the mess we are in in the Middle East had Nixon stayed in office and Reagan succeeded him.  I am not sure what everyone's problem with Nixon was except that he misled us about that little Watergate break-in which Democrats perform all the time and not only do they perform break-ins but steal elections, dating back as far as I can recall.  I still remember when the election was stolen from Nixon in 1960 and yet he cared too much about the country to put us through a "hanging chads" kind of recall like the Algorey did.  I think the Algorey thought Bush would bend and bow to him like Nixon did to Kennedy.  Nixon was a friend of Israel in the same way that Kennedy had been.  the US and Israel have had no better friends in the White House than Nixon, Reagan and Bush.  Carter and Clinton still receive big monetary awards from the Muslims.  Carter is still indebted millions of dollars to the Saudis and we will never know what Bill & Hillary owe them.

Nah, Carter is just an idiot.

Hard to believe someone so techinically competent could be so stupid.

They don't have to repay anything as long as they keep us marching to Mecca, IMO....

It KILLS me that the media loves those that cause the most harm to this Country... and the media would be the first to be executed.  What Carter, Clinton, et. al do reminds me of the theory of Booker T Washington discussed by W.E.B. DuBois - if there is only room for one at the top, sell out your people to stay there...

Not exactly term limits but certainly a peeve of mine is how when it is a Republican involved in any hint of scandal, they must resign.  Yet we had Gerry Studds in office for six more terms after having actual sex with under-aged page.

Kerry should be in jail for lying before congress and Kennedy, Franks, etc. are all still in office no matter what they have on their record.  Yet at the first blush of any scandal, a conservative must at the very least forfeit all positions of power or resign outright.

I realize conservatives hold themselves to a higher standard and all that but it's time to start fighting back and playing by the street rules with regard to this.

And remember where you heard it first, folks!  Barbara Boxer says one can't lead the military properly unless they have a child on the front lines.  Does this mean we are saved from the Socialist and the Muslim after all?  By her standard, we certainly are.

Why is it the party that claims to champion women's rights always manages to set them back a generation every chance they get?  Odd, that.
