I've just had a thought that perhaps this is why so many people on that island can defend Joran and look you straight in the eye when doing it.  When violence and rape and degradation are seen over and over, and it becomes commonplace, then people become jaded and accept it as a part of their life.  It no longer carries the horror and disgust that these actions cause in normal people in normal societies.  Perhaps this is why these young girls defend Joran and why the older people in that society are not up in arms and trying to stop this behavior.  They've seen it, over and over again, and it's become, if not acceptable, at least not criminal to them.  It strikes me that their attitude is more like why the big deal over this when the Americans are outraged and demand answers.  Years of this behavior, maybe even generations of it, have jaded them.

I believe the word you are looking for is DE-SENSITIZED.

Hi Monkeys,

Just a quick drive by. I had thought about adding to the story Easy and some others have been writing but Tylergal has got it to a point it will take more skill than I have to go further. Maybe Easy or Mrs Red can or even Anna. Maybe even someone who I never mentioned. It really lets me know how talented so many of our Monkeys are.

Even Terry270 when he wrote about the child dancing (on this forum a few pages back) sounded like he might be able to add to the story.

Oh Klaas, Lousw is a male. I am almost positive. Not sure on Terry. LOL

I was going to ask Klaas to delete the part I wrote and now you have assured  me, she should.  It was late night and my cats were prowling and I was getting too morbid.

Part of a pre World War I behavior, still existent on this island.  Too much technology too fast, too much money too fast, risen to quickly to a popular vacation site, only to have its citizens inflict on tourists what they are doing in their own personal lives.

If you will recall, Beth did not go to bed but went back to the HI and got the tapes and looked at them.  ALE had no choice but to look at them because she was saying that Natalee was never dropped off and the tape proved it.  Meanwhile Paulus is dropping Joran off at school and lying to the headmaster that the reason the tape does not show Joran dropping Natalee off is that the tape was broken.

Why did Paulus think he could get to the tape and make it be broken?  Little did he know with whom he was dealing with Beth, HA!  Too late, Paulus!  Tapes already seen by Beth and others.

So why did they go ahead and arrest the security guards when they, ALE and Cowgirl KJ, already knew that the HI story was a big, fat lie???  Anything to cast attention away from the Sloots??  Trying to frame the guards even if innocent??  That arrest was very telling and one of the first indications that things were going very off-track in this investigation.  Red flag if ever there was one!  JMO.

Just got through reading Greta's blog and I am steamed!  There are at least three emails, long ones, slamming Bo Dietl, and only one very short one that (I think) defends the family.

Have been doing some spot reading back.  When Klaas posted the picture that I think Widget asked for of the guy in 2002 signing in at the casino, one thing I noticed was that he had no watch on his left arm.  It struck me, that people who do wear watches usualy start when they are teens and it is a habit they never change, just like putting on their socks and shoes  in a certain order.  I would lean towards that is not Paulus.

Of course, they knew enough to leave out the drugging and raping part of the story to the Americans.  But they did admit parts of it to their own people.  For example, Joran told his mother about Natalee's underwear and what he did to her.  This shows acceptance in their own society, but an awareness that he needed to be quiet about these things around the Americans because they didn't accept this behavior.
