Woman's body found in Wyoming
Written by: Dan Metcalf Jr.
Last Update: 10:42 am

LARAMIE, Wyo. (ABC 4 News) - A woman's body has been found near Laramie, Wyoming.

Albany County Sheriff's Office investigators say the body was found on a ranch.

According to investigators, the body belongs to a woman in her 30s, about 5 feet tall with short, light brown hair.

Police believe the body has been there for at least 6 to 12 months.

Albany County spokeman, Lt. Garcia, told ABC 4 News that the body was found on September 9th 14 miles northeast of Laramie on the Warren Livestock Ranch by a sheep herder.

The body is of a woman, 30 to 40 years old, 5'2 - 5'3 inches tall with light brown chin-length hair.

Garcia said that the body may have been on the ranch since last fall or winter or possibly even spring, and that there was nothing found with the body that could to identify her.

Garcia  said that no cause of death has been determined, and the Albany County Sheriff's Office was being assisted by the Air Force base in Cheyenne along with the University of Wyoming.

Investigators hope to identify the body using dental records, which could take 2-6 weeks.

ABC 4 has learned that Wyoming authorities are in contact with West Valley City police, because of the Susan Cox Powell investigation.
Susan has been missing since Sunday December 7, 2009. Friends and co-workers reported her missing the next day when she did not show for work.

Her husband Josh told investigators he had been on a camping trip with the couple's two young sons on the night of the 7th when her returned to their West Valley City home on Monday December 8th.

Josh Powell has been named a person of interest by investigators. He has since moved to Washington with the couple's two sons.

Several search efforts have been concentrated in the West Desert area of Tooele County, where Josh Powell claimed to have been camping with his sons on the night of Susan's disappearance.

Stay tuned to ABC 4 News and ABC4.com for more on this story.

Woman's body found NE of Laramie
September 14th, 2010 @ 10:47am
LARAMIE, Wyo. -- A woman's body was found 14 miles northeast of Laramie, Wyo.

The Albany County Sheriff's Office says the Caucasian woman was between 30 and 40 years old and about 5 feet, 2 inches tall. She had light brown hair 3 to 4 inches long. Investigators say the woman died sometime between last fall and this past spring.

The remains were found Sept. 9 on a remote part of the Warren Livestock Ranch. Lt. Michael Garcia with the Albany County Sheriff's Office says the area where the body was found is not heavily traveled.

He told KSL the sheriff's office is aware of the Susan Powell case. Powell, the West Valley City mother who was reported missing Dec. 7, could fit the description of this body found in Wyoming. Garcia said, at this point, they can only say they have no idea who the woman is and are waiting for dental records, which could take two to six weeks to get. Once they have those, they hope to have solid leads on the case.

Meanwhile, West Valley City police Sgt. Mike Powell says his department is aware of the case in Wyoming and the department has not been contacted by Wyoming authorities about the Susan Powell disappearance.

The woman isn't believed to have been reported missing from Laramie or Albany County.

Is Body Found on Wyoming Sheep Ranch Missing Mom Susan Powell?
Wyoming Police Find Remains of a Woman, But It Could Take Weeks to Identify

(Dental records shouldn't take weeks Rolling Eyes )

Police Working to Determine if Body Found on Wyoming Ranch Is Missing Mom Susan Powell

"A lot of bodies have been found in the past nine months. If there's a remote possibility, we make contact with the agency that found the body and send any relevant information," said Sgt. Mike Powell, spokesman for the West Valley City Police Department.

Powell said his department had as recently as last week been in touch with a Washington state police department about a body found there.   *(I posted about this one on the previous page)

"It would be a mistake to go crazy over any particular incident until we had something solid. We are very much aware of this body and have contacted Laramie," he said.

Garcia said no one matching the description of the woman has gone missing from the Laramie area.

"The next step is to positively identify the body and determine if someone reported missing fits that description," he said.

Garcia said police departments around the country will send his office dental records and other information about women missing from those areas. The woman will likely be identified through her dental records, he said.

"A lot of families out there are missing loved ones," Garcia said. "We don't want to give anyone false hope."

Aproximately 6 hours each way, according to abcnews.

So, instead of camping the night and day, he drove there and back.

How come nobody put him somewhere else, other than the camping site? He had to get gasoline somewhere, or use a restroom.

I wonder if he took the kids or not, IF THAT BODY IS HERS.

In order to know where to drop a body and not be found for awhile, he had to have been in the area before, unless he drove and drove until he found the place.

Just weird.

Body found matches description of missing Utah woman
September 14, 2010

SEATTLE - Police have contacted Susan Powell's family in Puyallup after a woman's body was found in Wyoming.

The body has not been identified, but a spokesperson for Susan Cox Powell's family told KING 5 the body has similarities to Powell's description. Investigators say the woman is in her 30s, about five feet tall with short, light brown hair.

Powell was last seen in her Utah home in December 2009.

Her husband reported her missing after he told police he took their two children out for a midnight camping trip. Josh Powell said when he returned, Susan was not at the house.

Josh Powell has been named a person of interest by investigators and has since moved to Washington state with the couple's two sons.

Shelby Gifford, the Powell family spokesperson, said since December relatives have been contacted "seven to eight times" by police who have found unidentified bodies.

“There really is no good outcome when the phone rings,” said Gifford.

Gifford said loved ones are holding out hope that Susan is still alive.

It could be several weeks before the Wyoming remains are identified.

The family was also contacted when an unidentified woman’s remains were found near the Suncadia resort last week.

Body of woman matching description of Susan Powell found in Wyoming
September 14, 2010

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Investigators in Wyoming are trying to identify a woman's body found on a ranch northeast of Laramie. Detectives say it appears she died sometime between last fall and this spring. The description of the woman found is similar to that of missing West Valley City woman, Susan Cox Powell, a family spokesperson tells FOX 13 News. Powell has been missing since December of 2009.

The body was found last Thursday, Sept. 9. The Albany County Sheriff's Office says the woman is between 30 and 40 years old, about 5 feet 3 inches tall, with light brown hair.
FOX 13 has contacted the West Valley Police Department, who says they are working with Wyoming officials on the case.

The Albany County Sheriff's Office says they do not believe the woman is from the Wyoming area.

Local authorities say working with Wyoming detectives on this case is standard protocol and they are not going to jump to any conclusions. They are now proceeding with caution on this case.

"We're not going to release a lot until we can identify this lady and we're not going to speculate who she is or anything like that because we don't want to give families any type of false hope," said Albany County Sheriff's Lt. Michael Garcia.

A Susan Cox Powell family spokesperson says, the thought that this could be her has crossed their minds.

"On the surface of course it matches Susan's description we are in a possession where we know law enforcement is aware, we know West Valley P.D. is aware and now we just have to play a waiting game," said Shelby Gifford, Susan Cox Powell family spokesperson. "Wow hard it that? It's really hard. It's indescribable. On one hand with every news you get, it's not bringing you closure, if it is Susan that's devastating. If it's not we still don't know what happened."

Investigators are working on identifying the body. They will use dental records to identify the woman, and investigators say it could take anywhere between two to six weeks.

Gifford says they have been through this time and time again, about eight times.

Susan Cox Powell went missing on Dec. 7, 2009. Her husband Josh Powell said he took his sons on a midnight camping trip and returned home later that morning to discover that Susan had disappeared. He moved to Washington State with his two young sons earlier this year.

Body Found 'Generally Matches' Missing Susan Powell
September 14, 2010

For Susan Cox Powell's family, the discovery of a woman's body of about the same age and size of the missing Utah woman offers little, if any, comfort or closure.

"We have been through this process several times with other bodies and it's more difficult each time," family spokeswoman Shelby Gifford tells PEOPLE.

The body was found Sept. 9 on a remote Wyoming ranch about 400 miles from Powell's hometown of West Valley City, Utah, and "generally matches" her description: a woman in her 30s about 5 feet tall with short, brown hair, according to the Albany County (Wyo.) Sheriff's Office.

"On the one hand, we don't want to get the call saying Susan's body has been found," adds Gifford about the mother of two who has been missing for nine months. "On the other hand, we feel so deeply for the families whose missing loved ones are identified. And if the body is not Susan, at the end of the day, we still don't know where Susan is or what happened to her. It's a no-win situation."

Wyoming authorities have been in contact with Utah police, Lt. Michael Garcia tells PEOPLE, and officials hope to identify the body with dental records, which may take up to four weeks. No cause of death has been determined.

Police investigating Powell's case have questioned her husband Joshua, whose alibi and level of cooperation has raised some eyebrows.

Joshua would only tell police he took his two young sons on a midnight camping trip on Dec. 6, the night his wife, 28, disappeared and has since refused to retrace his route.

For 24 hours, Powell's whereabouts were unknown and law enforcement sources said a car he rented two days after Susan was reported missing was returned with several hundred miles on the odometer and without any GPS data.
Husband a "Person of Interest"
Susan's family has alleged the couple's nine-year relationship "was adversarial" and that at on at least one occasion Joshua became physically abusive, Cox family spokesperson Shelby Gifford said in June. His father and brother deny the allegations.

The couple also reportedly argued over their financial problems and friends urged her to get a divorce.

Joshua has hired a criminal attorney, who says his client has not hindered the investigation as police have suggested.

West Valley City police are still investigating Powell's case and "working all new leads," says Sgt. Mike Powell. "[Josh] is still a person of interest and that's about all I can say. We're still actively working on resolving the case."

California: Schwarzenegger signs bill to improve search for missing children
September 26th, 2010 2:44 am ET
CALIFORNIA - Among dozens of bills signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Friday was the package of missing-persons bills.

The package of missing-persons bills signed by Schwarzenegger was championed by Moe Dubois, the father of 14-year-old Amber Dubois, one of two teenagers killed in San Diego County by convicted sex offender John Albert Gardner, III.

There have been complaints of police not responding appropriately when a child is reported missing.

AB 33 will improve police training in missing-persons cases and will allow law enforcement agencies to obtain and better use a list of registered sex offenders when a child is reported abducted by a stranger.
LA Times reported that the measure was written by Assemblyman Pedro Nava (D-Santa Barbara), who also authored AB 34, a related bill signed by the governor that requires the state Violent Crime Information Center to share information on cases with the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

Missing persons a growing national problem

Missing persons is a growing national, and international problem that has impacted not only families, but entire communities.

On a mission to spread the word about missing persons, and to help change laws, Ed Smart and Ahmad Rivazfar joined together in a bicycle ride across the United States, “Ride for their lives.”

One of their stops was in Salt Lake City where they met up with families grieving the loss of their loved ones who have gone missing.
Supporters bicycled across the U.S. from August 21 through September 22.

While in Salt Lake City, Smart and Rivazfar met up with Chuck and Judy Cox, parents of Susan Cox Powell. Susan is the 28-year-old Puyallup, Wash., native who went missing from her West Valley City, Utah, home in early December 2009.

Supporters of Susan and others concerned about the issue were also in attendance, as were parents hoping to protect their children from becoming victims.

Governor Gary Herbert began to cry as he spoke, saying this issue is very important to him. He said he grasped a tiny inkling of what these parents feel when their children go missing. His own daughter went missing for a few days this summer.
Gov. Herbert declared September 10, 2010, as “Ride for Their Lives Day” in Utah

Volunteers Search Abandoned Mines for Missing Utah Mother

Published October 04, 2010

A group of volunteers has begun searching abandoned mines for any trace of a Utah mother who disappeared from a Salt Lake City suburb almost a year ago, Fox13now.com reports.

Susan Powell, of West Valley City, Utah, was reported missing on Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up to her job as a stockbroker for Wells Fargo Financial.

The volunteer group, Mojave Underground Utah, is now assisting in the search for her by exploring abandoned mines in Dugway and Eureka, Utah, according to the station.

The group's efforts, however, have been met with controversy because the searches are reportedly being conducted without the approval of state or local authorities. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining has also declared the searching of abandoned mines a public safety hazard, saying the mines are unstable.

I heard that tonight as well, specifically the police have been searching old silver mines.  There must have been something they found specific to a silver mine in testing the car and his clothes that would lead them in that direction.

Missing Mom Susan Powell's Son: "Mommy's in the Mine"

In an explosive new development in the Susan Cox Powell case, the missing Utah mom's four-year-old son reportedly said, "Mommy's in the mine, looking for crystals." The boy reportedly made the statement after his mom went missing in Dec. 2009, but it wasn't made public until now.
Police are searching abandoned mine shafts near Powell's home. Adding to the intrigue: according to a report on CNN's Nancy Grace Show, airing Oct. 7, Powell's husband, Josh, once told a friend that a mineshaft would be the best place to dispose of a body.

A 28-year-old stockbroker and mom, Susan Cox Powell went missing from her home on December 7, 2009. On the night she disappeared, her husband claims he took their two sons, ages four and two, camping overnight in the West Deserts of Utah, where temperatures were freezing.
As part of their search efforts, teams are dropping cameras into two silver mineshafts 20 to 50 miles away from the area Josh Powell claims he took his sons camping. These mines are at least half a mile deep.

According to Chuck Cox, Susan's father, Susan and Josh were having marital problems shortly before she disappeared. They seemed to be on the way to patching things up - Josh had begun attending church with Susan again - but "right now in the wake of everything," Cox said, "we`re not sure that it wasn`t just a show." Cox also said that Joshua Powell is preventing his children from having any contact with their grandfather.

Also revealed on the CNN show: Powell, an avid fan of crime shows, is alleged to have told a friend at a 2008 Christmas party that the perfect hiding place for a body would be a deep mineshaft.
