Rain halts search for signs of Susan Powell
Cadaver dogs have indicated there may be human remains at desert site
September 16, 2011

DELTA, Utah — Rain and wind forced police to halt their search Friday afternoon for signs of a missing Utah mother at a central Utah desert site where cadaver dogs have indicated there may be human remains.

Authorities have been in the area since Monday searching for any clues in the disappearance of Susan Powell, a mother of two who vanished in 2009. On Thursday, investigators announced they had discovered human remains after cadaver dogs alerted them to what was described as a shallow grave. But authorities later acknowledged that nothing had yet been found.

New dogs brought to the area Friday hit on the same location, and authorities say they'll keep digging until the dogs stop signaling.

Earlier in the day, Merritt said authorities were "still very confident that there's some type of remains in that hole."

Police had been waiting Friday for additional forensic specialists to assist in sifting through the dirt, looking for any material that appears out of place, including bone fragments, jewelry, clothing and human tissue.

But they decided to stop for the day and cover the site with tarps to protect it from rain. They planned to resume excavation Saturday morning.

By midday, they had dug several feet but found nothing. Meanwhile, Susan Powell's father, Chuck Cox, arrived, saying he needed to come to the site.

"I just feel this is a worthwhile investigation and I need to stay until I know what it is they have found," Cox said, his eyes tearing.
 ::snipping2::
On Thursday, a federal anthropologist determined the site was not an ancient burial ground, but showed signs of recent disturbance.

Merritt said Thursday there was a "50-50" chance investigators would find remains belonging to Susan Powell.

 ::snipping2::
Meanwhile, officials from the U.S. Army's Dugway Proving Ground have contacted authorities about the possibility that any remains found might belong to missing Spc. Joseph Bushling, Army spokeswoman Paula Thomas said.

"We have no reason to believe it's him, but we're being diligent," she said.

Bushling disappeared May 8 from the nearby Army site that was established in 1942 to study chemical and biological warfare. The car he was driving and his hat were later found within about 20 miles of where authorities are now searching for Susan Powell.

I am so confused by the latest reports....if they didn't find remains ..what did they find..a shallow grave..but how do they know it is a grave if their are no remains..because of the dogs hitting there..yet nothing there to see with the naked eye...just not adding up..and Susan's dad traveling there..something is up...

My theory (of the moment, anyway) is there may have been a body there at one time, but it's not there now.  I think cadaver dogs hit on death scent in an area that appears to be what they're calling a "shallow grave" or a place where a body has lain. There may not be bones and remains, but there might be enough for the dogs to pick up the sent, and this could include "very minute pieces of cadaver or even blood drops in a specified area" as this article explains.

CADAVER DOG

A cadaver dog reacts to the scent of a dead human.  The dog can be trained for above ground and buried cadaver searches.  Although many dogs have the potential to detect human scent, whether dead or alive, the cadaver dog is trained to locate only human remains.  The training process includes detection of very minute pieces of cadaver or even blood drops in a specified area.

TY Muffy..I just figure that LE would not have been talking to the press or public if they thought that they had nothing..meaning this keeps pressure on Josh and his Dad....and pressure is what they need to be under.  I pray that this site is either her burial  spot or leads them to some info to finally put a nail in the coffin of Josh and his Dad.  They are horrrible people to make the kind of remarks they have about Susan..and it chills my blood that they are the people bringing up the next generation of this legacy..Susan's boys deserve to be with her parents...and I bet that Steve and Josh do not allow Steve's exwife and daughter, Josh's mother and sister, to be with the boys either..

I was thinking of Susan Powell and her two sons this last night and this morning.  Even though Susan may no longer be in this world, if her remains can be found, her children may still  be saved from Josh and Steve.  Who knows what kind of vile things they've told the kids, what with all the lies they've made up to try to discredit her as a good woman, wife and mother and spewed out to the public?  The children are in a very toxic environment.   Not only that, but most of all the children are in home with two people that most likely had a hand in her demise.  We can't bring Susan back to life, but her son's lives are still at stake.  I can't believe how difficult it must be for Charles Cox.  His daughter is missing, his SIL and his SIL's father may have had a hand in her disappearance.  Josh won't let Charles see his grandsons.  And all the while, Josh and Steve are spewing falsehoods about Susan.    I hope Charles can continue to stay strong for his daughter and grandsons, and Susan will be found soon.

More officers join search of ‘grave’ at Utah desert site for mom missing for nearly 2 years
By Associated Press, Updated: Saturday, September 17, 4:59 PM

DELTA, Utah — Authorities had dug about 3 feet down Saturday afternoon into what they’ve described as a shallow grave in the rugged Utah desert as part of a nearly two-year investigation into missing mother, but had so far found no clues.

Two previous days of digging also turned up nothing. Additional experts joined the search Saturday to help in the painstaking process of sifting through piles of dirt being shoveled from the ground for anything out of the ordinary, including human bone or tissue, clothing or jewelry.

Investigators remained confident but acknowledged they still don’t know whether the site is related to the disappearance of Susan Powell.

Investigators remained confident but acknowledged they still don’t know whether the site is related to the disappearance of Susan Powell.

“We’re all very hopeful,” West Valley City Lt. Bill Merritt said. “I guess it’s 50-50 at this point.”

Eleven cadaver dogs have indicated they sense human remains at the site, but none have signaled on the piles of dirt being removed, authorities said.

The search was halted abruptly Friday when a rainstorm swept through the area.

Cadaver dogs led police to the site Wednesday just off a dirt road near the base of Topaz Mountain, a popular rock-hounding spot in remote central Utah. The area is more than 130 miles from the location where Powell was last seen at her West Valley City home on Dec. 7, 2009.

Authorities have been searching the area since Monday. On Wednesday, they said they found human remains but later backtracked, clarifying that cadaver dogs had hit on the site but no remains had been found.

Thanks for the article....that's strange about the dogs not alerting on any of the excavated dirt. A dead body just laid there on the top?

Both KSL.com and The Tribune are reporting the finding of burned wood in the "grave", about 100 pieces of them, ranging in sizes from a quarter to a golf ball. They say that the wood may have been in contact with a corpse and that's why the dogs have been pointing at the site.

The Tribune reports that the digging has stopped, and that police don't plan on digging any further.

Here we go again.........

DELTA, Utah (ABC 4 News) - After days of searching a gravesite in the west desert near Topaz Mountain, investigators found over 100 pieces of charred wood with traces of what they believe to be human decomposition.

The wood was found about two feet below the earth covering the grave.  Police decided to stop digging once they found the wood, because the cadaver dogs no longer indicated there was a scent deeper in the grave.

Detectives are confident the wood was used to help burn a human body. "We're not talking about someone just touching something and the dead skin cells are left behind.  This is from a dead body and there's a chemical process when someone dies.  About 20 minutes after a person dies, they give off the scent of death and that's what these dogs are smelling," says West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

Clothing, flesh, or bone could not be found while they were unearthing the burnt pieces of wood, but detectives are hopeful the forensic anthropologist will be able to determine human DNA.

Surely that prick Josh couldn't have carried enough wood for a fire so hot to burn up every trace of her except the scent, right?  C'mon, something, anything to show it's her.grrrr

Ok, I'm 45 with a 2 yr old so don't get to watch the news that often.  I follow the Casey murdering slore but that's about it.  I caught this on one of the news shows and as someone who knows NOTHING about the case I thought I'd throw this out there.

(sorry can't remember which show ;(  the father in law was talking about Susan being flirtatious with him.  Is there anyway the father forced himself on her & told the husband it was the other way around which prompted the husband (I don't even know his name yet) to murder her, though I suspect it would not take much the husband is clearly psycho.  It is SO obvious both of them are lying.  Good grief.

off to read what the monkeys are saying about the case............

just now reading up on the case and have a question...........

didn't they say they were acting on a "tip"?  Who would have given them a tip?  Seems like the father & son are tight & closed lips so I can't see either of them telling someone something about it.  Could the "tip" be the GPS that everyone is speculating about?

OMG this young lady was/is beautiful.  Every picture I saw showed someone that loved life.  You could just see it in her eyes.  There's no way she just walked away from her kids.

What is happening in our world.  Why on earth don't these psychopaths just get a divorce!  They honestly believe killing someone is a better answer to joint custody, loss of control & child support.  I'm 45 and I don't know if things were just different thirty years ago or you just didn't hear about it but I don't remember all this spousal killing going on.  Good grief!

Some people are so sick that they can't accept rejection or feel like their spouse is a possession or so jealous that they won't endure the other being free and happy or whatever tweaks go on in their psychotic minds that they kill.  It's unbelievable that this wuss could manage to get away with it. It does seem like it happens more now.

"Those pieces of wood were used to destroy something -- something that has to do with human decomposition. So, at some point ... that hole up there was a crime scene," said Bill Merritt of the West Valley Police Department.
The fire would have been hot enough to burn a body, but not bones.
