Police say Susan Powell case still very active after 2 years disappearance
Aaron Vaughn, Web Producer
FOX 13 News

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah—
West Valley City Police say the search for the missing West Valley Mother, Susan Cox Powell, is still a top priority for them. And after two years since Susan's disappearance, they say they have made progress yet still not saying whether they are any closer to solving the case.

 ::snipping2::

Some thought there would be a break in the case this summer when police found a shallow grave during a search near Topaz Mountain in the West Desert. However, what cadaver dogs indicated to be possible human remains turned out to be remnants of a fire pit and bits of charred wood. Police say the wood was analyzed, but do not say whether human remains were found during lab tests.

Results are in on charred wood found during Susan Powell search

West Valley City police on Tuesday said a laboratory has finished examining suspicious charred wood found during a desert search for Susan Cox Powell, but the department would not say whether the wood bears a connection to the missing woman.

"Those results have come back," said Sgt. Mike Powell, who is no relation to Susan Powell. "However, we are not able to discuss the specifics of those results at this point."

"In a general statement, I can definitely tell you that the investigation is progressing forward," Mike Powell added.

Susan Cox Powell’s father, Chuck Cox, on Tuesday said police had not informed him of the lab results.

On Sept. 14, cadaver dogs searching near Topaz Mountain in Juab County indicated the presence of human remains. Police excavated the site but found only what they described as charred wood and theorized they may have been used to incinerate human remains. Police said the site looked less than 10 years old, but there was otherwise no evidence of a connection to the Susan Powell disappearance.

Detectives sent the wood to a crime lab for analysis.

WEST VALLEY CITY — Tuesday marks two years since the last time since Susan Cox Powell was seen.

"I never thought we would get to this point and not be done when we began this whole process," said Jennifer Graves, the sister of Susan's husband, Josh Powell.

Kiirsi Hellewell, a friend who lived near the Powells in West Valley City, sent out a message on her Twitter account Tuesday: "Rough week emotionally. Today is December 6: 2 years ago this noon I walked home from church with Susan. How I wish I'd known."

Tuesday, West Valley police released a brief statement saying the case is still an active investigation.

"This case has been, and continues to be a top priority for the West Valley City Police Department and the team of detectives assigned to it full time. The investigation continues to progress with information developed from leads and other relevant evidence," the department said in the statement.

Police recognize Dec. 7 as the day Susan Powell was reported missing.

Tuesday, West Valley Police Sgt. Mike Powell said test results from items collected during an extensive search of the remote Topaz Mountain area in September — small items that appeared to be burnt pieces of wood — had been returned. However, Powell could not comment on any information about what was found or if there were human remains on the small pieces as cadaver dogs had originally detected, or if it had anything to do with the Susan Powell case at all.

In September, police noted that "human remains" could mean dried blood and not necessarily decaying flesh or tissue.

Chuck and Judy Cox, who currently have temporary custody of Josh and Susan Powell's two young boys, have declined all interview requests since gaining custody of the children, citing a court order telling them to stay out of the media spotlight.

They did, however, release a brief statement reminding people that their daughter is still missing, and adding that "Joshua Powell remains the only person of interest in Susan's disappearance."

'Dateline' plans special episode to mark anniversary of Powell disappearance
By Sam Penrod and Pat Reavy
December 6th, 2011

Josh Powell's interview with Dateline

"I don't know what's happened to her. I don't know where she is," Josh Powell told "Dateline NBC's" Keith Morrison in an interview that will air Friday at 9 p.m. MST.

When Josh Powell agreed to meet with Dateline, he spent hours talking with Morrison late at night, at the same time police were raiding his father's home.

"He talked about Susan in the present tense, which some people will find curious," Morrison told KSL News. "I asked him, ‘Do you think she's still out there somewhere?'"

To that, Morrison said Josh Powell threw out several theories but made it clear he didn't have anything to do with Susan's disappearance.

"He said he thought she was, she was afraid to come back and was looking for a safe way to return — an odd thing to say, I think some sort of a reflection of the feud the Powell men have going with Susan's parents."

The hour-long report involves all of the players in the case, including Susan's family and friends and West Valley police investigators. It also examines the couple's early relationship.

But in talking to Morrison, he was most intrigued about his interviews with Josh and Steven Powell. "Listening to them and looking at their facial expressions as I was editing this was really fascinating," he said.

That interest has increased, Morrison said, since Steven Powell's arrest on child porn charges and the extensive search in the desert near Topaz Mountain during September.

"It was fascinating to watch developments occur, but also, to some extent, through the eyes of these two men … very interesting," Morrison said.

Josh Powell says sons in middle of 'very hostile war'
Published: Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 7:21 p.m. MST
By Emiley Morgan, Deseret News

PUYALLUP, Wash. — Almost two years to the day that his wife went missing, Josh Powell filed a declaration in court as part of an ongoing custody battle over the couple's two children alleging harm and "ongoing trauma."

"By being with the Coxes, my sons are caught in the middle of a very hostile war of words and emotions," Powell wrote in a signed declaration filed in a Pierce County court Wednesday.

He called the Cox family's treatment of his children "reckless," indicative of "an irrational vendetta against me," and said it is "sapping my sons' happiness and sense of security."

In September, a Washington judge gave temporary custody of Josh and Susan Cox Powell 's two sons, ages 4 and 6, to Susan's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox. The decision came following the arrest of Josh Powell's father, Stephen Powell, on voyeurism and child porn charges and in light of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell.

The boys had been living with Josh Powell at his father's home in Washington since Jan. 2010. Susan Powell was last seen at the family's home on Dec. 6, 2009. Josh Powell has been named a person of interest in her disappearance because police say he has not cooperated with them.

SALT LAKE CITY — The husband of missing Utah mom Susan Cox Powell says her parents are turning the couple’s children against him.

Josh Powell filed a court declaration this week in Pierce County, Wash., asking the 4- and 6-year-old boys to be moved to a neutral caretaker. He says Chuck and Judy Cox, who have custody, have an “irrational vendetta” against him that’s putting stress on the boys.

Saw "Dateline". Nothing new, just what we have already discussed. Except...

... did I hear the man (didn't get the name) saying that Josh may also be a subject of the child pornography investigation?

I didn't see "Dateline", but from what I can remember reading in articles here,it would appear Josh is being investigated because he wants custody of his children and LE must not only clear him as a POI in Susan's disappearance, they must also clear him of any participation in his father's alleged illegal activities (which I assume is Steve's child porn).  This makes sense to me even without the question of custody, because Josh lived in the same house with his father and I believe they may have used at least one of the same computers.  So yeah, I'll bet he's under investigation in regard to child porn.  You can probably comb through some of the latter pages in this thread and find where LE will be looking at Josh too, for the reasons I gave.

With his children now in the custody of their maternal grandparents, there is only one way for Josh Powell to get them back, says one national child welfare expert: Law enforcement must clear him as a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife, Susan, and of any participation in his father’s alleged illegal activities.

Josh Powell says he may not want to be married to Susan anymore

PUYALLUP, Washington (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) - In an exclusive, not seen before interview with Dateline's Keith Morrison, Josh Powell said everything had changed and he didn’t think tension with his missing wife, Susan Cox Powell’s family, would be conducive to a good marriage if she ever returned.

The MSNBC Dateline interview aired Dec. 9, 2011, nearly two years to the day that Susan went missing. Police are still waiting for laboratory testing of ashes discovered by cadaver dogs during the Topaz Mountain search that may contain human remains, said West Valley City Police Chief Buzz Nielsen.

They also are continuing to sort through a trailer full of evidence taken from the Puyallup home, he said.

No other searches are planned, but Nielsen said he remains confident the case will be solved.

“We’re going to get there,” he said.

Family marks 2-year anniversary of Koecher disappearance
By Alex Cabrero
December 13th, 2011 @ 10:05pm

BOUNTIFUL — With just one plug, hundreds of little lights turned a single Christmas tree outside a Bountiful home into a beacon of hope Tuesday night.

For Deanne Koecher, that hope has been going on for two years now: December 13, 2009 was the last time anyone saw her son, Steven Koecher.

 ::snipping2::

Steven Koecher was talked about briefly during the "Dateline NBC" special on Susan Powell last week. Steven Powell, Susan's father-in-law, suggested Steven Koecher ran off with Susan, but there has never been any evidence of that.

KSL News asked Deanne Koecher if seeing that suggestion on TV made her mad. She said no — even though it's completely ridiculous, at least it got her son's face on national TV. She's hoping maybe someone out there recognizes him.

If you have any information related to Steven Koecher's last-known whereabouts and disappearance, contact St. George police at 435-627-4950.

There was a special on Steven on Discovery ID last night.  Sorry, I don't have a link.  It is painfully obvious he is not with Susan.
