I wonder if a body had been in the shallow grave and it was moved elsewhere?

Police: A 50-50 chance Susan Cox Powell is in suspected gravesite

Quote
Investigators ended their digging about 5:30 p.m. Thursday and planned to resume about Friday morning. Detectives had dug about 1 ½ to 2 feet deep into the disturbed gravesite, about 2 feet wide and 3 feet long, said West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

No bones or clothing or anything of note had yet been spotted, but Merritt said dogs continued to give a "strong indication" that remains are present.

"The dogs are smelling something. It's human decomposition," he said. "The way they are indicating ... it's a very strong indication. It's not a passive indication."

I was thinking of Susan Powell and her two sons this last night and this morning.  Even though Susan may no longer be in this world, if her remains can be found, her children may still  be saved from Josh and Steve.  Who knows what kind of vile things they've told the kids, what with all the lies they've made up to try to discredit her as a good woman, wife and mother and spewed out to the public?  The children are in a very toxic environment.   Not only that, but most of all the children are in home with two people that most likely had a hand in her demise.  We can't bring Susan back to life, but her son's lives are still at stake.  I can't believe how difficult it must be for Charles Cox.  His daughter is missing, his SIL and his SIL's father may have had a hand in her disappearance.  Josh won't let Charles see his grandsons.  And all the while, Josh and Steve are spewing falsehoods about Susan.    I hope Charles can continue to stay strong for his daughter and grandsons, and Susan will be found soon.

I am so confused by the latest reports....if they didn't find remains ..what did they find..a shallow grave..but how do they know it is a grave if their are no remains..because of the dogs hitting there..yet nothing there to see with the naked eye...just not adding up..and Susan's dad traveling there..something is up...

My theory (of the moment, anyway) is there may have been a body there at one time, but it's not there now.  I think cadaver dogs hit on death scent in an area that appears to be what they're calling a "shallow grave" or a place where a body has lain. There may not be bones and remains, but there might be enough for the dogs to pick up the sent, and this could include "very minute pieces of cadaver or even blood drops in a specified area" as this article explains.

CADAVER DOG

A cadaver dog reacts to the scent of a dead human.  The dog can be trained for above ground and buried cadaver searches.  Although many dogs have the potential to detect human scent, whether dead or alive, the cadaver dog is trained to locate only human remains.  The training process includes detection of very minute pieces of cadaver or even blood drops in a specified area.

Police give 50-50 chance remains are Susan Powell's
By Shara Park and Randall Jeppesen
September 15th, 2011 @ 5:12pm

DELTA — Investigators who discovered human remains near Topaz Mountain now say there's a 50-50 chance they have discovered the final resting place of missing West Valley mother Susan Cox Powell.

The remains appear to be "fairly recent," an anthropologist with the Fillmore office of the Bureau of Land Management said Thursday. That could mean the remains have been in the Juab County desert anywhere from a few weeks to over a decade.

"This is not going to be an ancient burial site. It's not going to be a cowboy from the West," said West Valley Police Lt. Bill Merritt.

The remains were found in a pile of dirt that was obviously a disturbed shallow gravesite, said West Valley Police Chief Buzz Nielsen.

They also do not yet know whether the body was male or female, but Merritt said there was a 50-50 chance it was Powell.

"It's something that's going to be interesting," he said.

The Changing Story

Police in Susan Powell missing case say "50/50" chance remains could be found

(CBS/KIRO/AP) JUAB COUNTY, Utah - A search in the Utah desert for missing woman Susan Powell took a strange turn Thursday when the site that authorities said contained human remains turned up no body parts, but a police lieutenant said he thought there was a "50/50" chance Powell's remains could be found there.

Cadaver dogs discovered the location this week amid a renewed search for Powell and investigators declared that they had found human remains.

But CBS affiliate KIRO reported that about 2 feet of dirt had been excavated and no bones were found. Police did not say why they earlier stated that they had found human remains when they had not even seen any.

"Right now, we haven't found anything except for these scents that these dogs are picking up," West Valley City Police Lt. Bill Merritt told KIRO-TV. "We have not come across bones."

Because the site is on government land, a federal anthropologist was brought in to examine the site Thursday to see if it was part of an ancient burial ground. Investigators then began sifting through what was described as a shallow grave as they searched for clues but had so far found nothing.

Investigators previously said that a federal anthropologist had determined the remains found in a remote area of central Utah were not ancient, but instead were much more recent.

If I get this straight, only one or two feet were dug yesterday and no real remains were found, but the searchers will continue digging today.

I can't believe that so many newspapers/news sites were reporting about human remains being found. Some sites were detailing how the remains were "examined" by the anthropologist.

ANYWAY... what's with the 50/50 odds? That's like YES it's her, or NO is not her. They are not saying a thing with that 50/50 figure.

Hopefully she will find soon.

I want to add my new theory as to why the authorities in this case keep bringing up search sites.

I figure that if they search a particular area each week (like Ely and now Topaz mountain) and publish the finding of "something" being found, and they keep an eye on the Powells, that they would know when they are close when the Powells freak out.

A game of "hot and cold."

That works for me Moosee!  I hope it's getting to the Powell's in a big way!

"Meantime, an apparent facebook post from Susan more than two years ago described a "weekend camping" trip that may have been not far from the police search. She and husband Josh had taken their boys on the excursion in the family van, less than six months before Susan went missing. Josh Powell remains the only named person of interest in the case."

DELTA — The father of missing West Valley mother Susan Cox Powell says he has purchased a one-way plane ticket and will stay in Utah until investigators can determine what they have in an apparent shallow grave in a remote area near Topaz Mountain.

Chuck Cox was escorted by police Friday to the area where multiple cadaver dogs have indicated there are likely human remains. West Valley police define "human remains" as anything from drops of blood to bones to tissue.
