"Since the story went national, we have received 75 credible tips from portions of the state and the coun-try," said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

In addition to traditional sources of media, police credit bloggers with helping to publicize this latest break in the case.

So far only a sketch of the man suspected in both crimes has been released. No arrest has been made.

It's been just more than one week since police released a sketch of a potential suspect in Morgan Harrington's death, and the tips continue to come in.

After releasing that sketch last Thursday, police say they have received 77 tips.

Police announced last week that forensic evidence links the man in the sketch, wanted for an unsolved 2005 rape in the City of Fairfax, to Harrington's disappearance and death in October.

They say they have no plans to update the five-year-old sketch of the suspect because adults' appearances don't change much in that amount of time. The wanted poster from 2005 describes the suspect as a black male around 30 years old. Police said that other than possibly shaving his beard, the person in the sketch shouldn't look much different.

Police have said the forensic evidence does not name the man in the sketch as the murderer, but he does have some link to Harrington.

Police are not disclosing exactly where the tips are coming from, but they do say most are coming from Virginia.

Finally, police say canvassing the area and showing the sketch to people would not be a good use of resources. They say summertime students at the University of Virginia are a new and different crowd, and these students would likely not have many tips.

While they aren't canvassing, police say they do believe they've gotten the information out there to those who need to know it.

The beach helps you simplify.  Each day you carry less stuff over the dunes realizing you can do without.  Dressing becomes a matter of choosing the driest tee shirt.  This simplification process forces me to let go of distractions and absorb the lessons hiding in front of me.

I thought I had gotten the beach insight already.  Several years ago when my sister was dying we were here and I wanted to bring Jackie one perfect shell from the beach she would never walk.

The Outer Banks is rough surf in the cross hairs of several opposing currents.  Finding perfect whole shells in this turbulence is rare.  So I gave up on the quest for a perfect shell for Jackie and instead saw the beauty and value in what was there; hidden in plain sight, weathered shells with holes in them.  These weathered shells started a long tradition of ankle bracelets for the beach crew.  We collect the shells that have been worn through with holes and add a bead or two and tie them on ankles all around.  I get a kick out of seeing these conservative, medical, button down types adorned so with shells and beads.  I love watching the shells we wear appear lighter as legs tan and cares lessen.

I have received that lessen but apparently I am suppose to take it even further.

There is yet another step on the way to becoming, that I see here in the surf.  Tides and waves and weather beat the shells into fragments, relentlessly pounding them until they are so broken that they are not discernable as shells at all.

That’s when it gets cool and magic happens.  Given time, the ragged shards of lives that were are ground so fine that they became the beach itself.  The sand we walk on is composed of minute fragments of shells.  It is not a graveyard but a place of stark beauty and a refuge for new lives and creatures to start their journey.  Morgan is in this mix.  We strive to see and accept the lessons and the gifts offered here.

Most of us have certain cases that stick with us......Morgan and her beautiful family break my heart.....over and over again.....they strive so hard to find meaning in her death and her beautiful life.....I wish them peace and love...and the courage to go on without their shiny girl....2 4 1... GRACE: Is there a break in the case of Morgan Harrington? Straight out to Stacey Newman, our producer on the story. Stacey, what do you know?

STACEY NEWMAN, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER, COVERING STORY: Big breaking news tonight, Nancy. Cops are confirming that a 2005 sex assault is linked by forensic evidence to the murder of Morgan Harrington.

GRACE: What do we know? How do we know that?
NEWMAN: Well, we do know that cops did they gathered evidence from Morgan Harrington`s crime scene and they have matched it to evidence from this attack on a 26-year-old woman about 100 miles away, Nancy, in Fairfax City, Virginia.

GRACE: Joining us right now, Dr. Dan Harrington. This is the father of Morgan Harrington. Also with us Gil Harrington, her mother. Dr. Harrington, thank you for being with us. When did you learn about the DNA match?

DAN HARRINGTON, FATHER OF MURDERED CO-ED, MORGAN HARRINGTON (via telephone): The police told us of the DNA match several weeks prior to the announcement last week. And then of course the DNA was confirmed to the public on Thursday of last week.

GRACE: Gil, this is Morgan`s mother, her mother and father being with us. I have thought about Morgan so many hundreds of times since we first covered this case. What does this mean to you?

GIL HARRINGTON, MOTHER OF MURDERED CO-ED, MORGAN HARRINGTON (via telephone): You know, Nancy, it`s hard. And we`re getting a lot of heat from people that say we should just step down and go away, because this is an ugly scenario.

And it`s too late for my girl. My daughter is dead, but this guy is at the top of his game now. He`s not satisfied with just hurting. Now he hurts and kills and we have to stop him before he does this to another young woman. I can`t go away.

GRACE: Who in their right mind, Ms. Harrington, would tell you, you need to back off?

GIL HARRINGTON: You know, we`re getting a lot of flak. People say it`s -- it`s as if we`re making social gaffes and we need to take our lumps and go away. And I`m not willing to do that because I can`t give up on the next girl and my daughter is dead.

But this guy is out there and from what I understand, people don`t shake off this compulsion. You know, maybe there`s a -- since the last assault that we know he committed five years ago in Fairfax. He did stuff in the interim, you know, a sexual assault is very underreported.
Maybe there`s a woman sitting on the sidelines who didn`t come forward and she can give us the information that would help us. You need three points for GPS. We have two points. We need a third point and then we can locate this man and get him off the street. That`s what I`m trying to do.

GRACE: To Eleanor Odom, sex crimes prosecutor, who has also handled death penalty trials. Eleanor, Ms. Harrington is right. These are not the only two times this guy has struck. He goes from a brutal sex assault in 2005 to the attack and murder of Morgan Harrington.

Now, there`s a lapse in time. I guarantee you there`s another victim in there. And how is it that sex offenders graduate to become murderers, Eleanor? How does that progression occur?

ODOM: It`s a pattern of escalating behavior, Nancy. If they`re not stopped from the very beginning, then you see this escalation and then it`s hard of course to stop at all. It can begin with something as easy as looking at pornography, child pornography and going on from there to the murder. So you have to stop them early.

GRACE: I guarantee you, Eleanor, he`s got things in his history, a criminal history, before that 2005 sex assault. It could be peeping tom. It could be an aggravated assault. There`s something this guy has got a record, I guarantee you.

It could be juvenile or not. This guy has got a record. Look at this composite. The perp six foot tall, medium build, black hair, beard, mustache, 2005 abduction and sex assault case in Fairfax. Forensic connection between that case and Morgan Harrington.

PENZONE: We had a case similar to this in Phoenix, Nancy, where there was a serial rapist who was killing people. First of all, my heart and prayers go out to the family. What they`re doing is the right thing to do, stay committed.

But what law enforcement is doing very well is first of all getting a composite. Even though it`s from the past giving people something to focus on that gives you structural and relative description. But that high reward, although it will bring in an enormous number of tips, weeding through those you`ll find the needle in the haystack.
So they need to keep the community committed. Through that you have to buy exposure through that reward using the media.

NEWMAN: This is a scary attack. A 26-year-old woman minding her business walking a quarter mile from a grocery store when she`s suddenly blindsided by this perp who grabs her, assaults her in the bush. Her life was spared when a passer-by came and the suspect ran off.

GRACE: This should jog everyone`s memory. Anyone that has come in touch with this guy. There`s $150,000 reward.

20-year-old Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington mysteriously vanished from a Metallica concert in Charlottsville Virginia, 3 months later, her skeletal remains were discovered in a remote farming area. Morgan had been raped and her death was brutal and violent, she suffered from multiple broken bones.

Now after 6 months, the dangerous predator has yet to be captured, but are investigators close to closing in on her evil killer?

I spoke with the parents of Morgan Harrington earlier this week. Dr. Dan Harrington told me that forensic evidence found on his daughter matched the DNA of a rapist who is wanted for a brutal 2005 sex assault in Fairfax Virginia.

The Harrington's are certain this is their daughters killer, but the question they are uncertain about is what his possible connection is to Charlottsville Virginia. His 2005 victim, was a resident of and was raped in Fairfax Virginia, which is 2-hours away from Charlottsville, where Morgan's body was found.
Furthermore, Morgan's father wonders what connection the killer has to the 700-acre farm, because he describes the area as "remote" and an area where someone "doesn't just happen upon." Did he work on the farm or in the area? Or was he a hunter? These are questions that are running through the minds Morgan's devastated parents. One thing Dr. Harrington says he is certain of, is that the killer is familar with the area.

Now law enforcement have released a 2005 composite sketch of the rapist, who is likely responsible for Morgan's brutal murder. The photo, pictured above, is of a black male, who is most likely somewhere between the ages of 30-40 years old. This man is the so called "Oxford row rapist."

In September of 2005, a 26-year-old woman was walking home after grocery shopping, while on her way home she was grabbed somewhere around 10 PM in her own neighborhood. The Hook reports that the rapist took his victim to a grassy area and started to rape her, but quit when a passerby scared him off. The 26-year-old then crawled to one of the closest homes in the area, where one of the residents called 911.

The residents described the condition of the victim as being beaten bloddy. That violent rapist has now gone on to kill poor Morgan Harrington and he is still free to rape or murder another woman.

Morgan's mother Gil Harrington says that she is "quasi frantic" because this rapist has a "blood lust" and is someoneone who "is no longer satisfied with raping or harming women" but is now a killer. She says in a hushed voice that she is "very concerned" about what this rapist has the potential of doing
Pat Brown a criminal profiler believes that this is a serial killer who is a "very dangerous predator" who has graduated from being a serial rapist to a serial killer. Brown says this serial killer gets his thrill from grabbing women and brutally raping them. Brown also believes the public can help solve this crime.

Morgan's father sums it up the best: "this guy remains a menace to the community."

Back from the beach trip. It was our first vacation without Morgan.  It was hard, especially for Dan.  Both of them shared a love of the surf and waves and would stay immersed for hours.  I miss seeing them play in the waves laughing.  I miss watching freckles bloom on her nose.  I miss anointing pinked sunburned skin with Noxzema.  I miss combing out her tangled hair. I miss sand in the bed.  I miss Morgan.

As you can see my surrender and submit got up and went.  I am back, stuck in the whys and what ifs and have lost my “it is” perspective. Suffering has unmoored and set us adrift at sea; a sea of tears whose very salinity will give us the buoyancy we need to stay afloat.

I don’t love where we are but still believe that we have an opportunity to learn from the master teacher, pain, if only we can survive the lesson.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Fast-breaking news in the war on women. Tonight, a major break in the Morgan Harrington case. This beautiful, young woman was abducted and murdered. Now, nine months later, cops have linked her case to another rape in the very same area. Could this sketch lead to a monster?


A massive break in the case of murdered Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington: six months after Morgan`s broken, battered skeleton was discovered in a shallow grave on a secluded remote Virginia farm, police finally have a huge lead.

Almost five years earlier, before Morgan disappeared from outside a rock concert, a young woman was walking home alone from a grocery store at night when she was abducted, grabbed from behind, dragged into the woods and sexually assaulted by a mystery attacker. A passerby spotted them and that attacker fled.

Tonight investigators say they now have forensic evidence that links these two cases together. That evidence is reportedly a DNA match. Back in 2005, that brave victim was able to describe her attacker to police. You`re looking at the sketch put together based on her words, ok. That`s the sketch.

Is this the predator who killed Morgan Harrington? Could this dramatic new lead bring justice for the Harringtons? And give Morgan`s parents the answers they desperately, desperately need.

GIL HARRINGTON, MORGAN HARRINGTON`S MOTHER: As you see us, our sorrow is etched in our faces, our pain has been carved into our hearts. This has been an unimaginable, horrific journey. And I will tell you, having seen that girl even had some lovely bones. That`s all I want to say.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: These parents have been through hell and back; the worst nightmare for anyone who has ever had a child. Morgan`s parents, Gil and Dan Harrington join me along with HLN law enforcement analyst Mike Brooks.

First of all to Dr. and Mrs. Harrington, our hearts go out to you. We are just crushed by what you have experienced. We hope somehow to be part somehow of the solution to this epidemic of wanton, senseless violence in our culture.

We are so inspired by your crusade to do something about this horror of violence against women. You both have said from the very beginning you believe this was a local person who may have harmed other women in the area.

So Gil, what went through your mind hearing this dramatic new news about the break in the case involving your daughter?

G. HARRINGTON: It`s hard to say that you were happy about such an obscenity. But, in effect, we were happy that we were one step closer to finding and apprehending this vicious predator and getting him off the streets.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Dr. Harrington, you are steeped in psychology. Is there any psychological relief for you, sir, hearing this news? Or does it create a new set of anxiety and questions?

DAN HARRING, MORGAN HARRINGTON`S FATHER: You know, Jane, it`s interesting, when I saw the picture this morning, I recognized that maybe for the first time that I`ve started to feel anger, because prior to this, obviously we know Morgan was murdered. But the -- it was an abstraction. There was no one that you could put a face to.

But today, there`s the concrete picture of this man. And it seems to me that for the first time, anger became way more of a prominent emotion for me.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: And, Gil, you were nodding your head. What did you want to say?

G. HARRINGTON: It`s personal for him now. This is a daddy who`s looking into the face of someone who snuffed the life of his daughter, the light of his life, finished.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: It`s so awful.

I have a big issue tonight, and that is what took so long? If they found DNA on Morgan`s remains way back in October, why did it take so many months to match it to a suspect whose DNA was already in the system? That gives him a chance to attack again.

The woman linked to Morgan`s case, that abduction and sexual assault, happened in Fairfax, Virginia. That`s about 80 miles away from where Morgan vanished from the Metallica concert. She was found about ten miles away from the Metallica concert at a secluded farm.

I want to bring Mike Brooks in briefly. Why do you think it took 6 months to link this DNA?

MIKE BROOKS, HLN LAW ENFORCEMENT ANALYST: That one crime occurred in 2005. And it depends on the quality of the DNA that they had to match it against any DNA that`s already in the database for either the state of Virginia or the CODIS, the FBI database.

So I don`t know exactly which database they got it out of. But, you know, I commend law enforcement for being vigilant, keeping on this case. And they were able to make this match.

Hopefully they`re able to adjust this photo now age-wise and maybe come up with somebody who fits that description in the Charlottesville area.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes, I commend them for making the link. But I think if we can send people to the moon as they say so often we can come up with a faster database and also solve rape cases more swiftly so that we don`t have predators out there able to attack again.

We talk about the war on women all the time here on ISSUES. Gil, I want to play something you said about the change we as a society must desperately make.

Let`s listen to what you said.

G. HARRINGTON: We need to change the social framework that views women as prey. I mean, that is the shift that needs to be made. I`m not sure how that can be accomplished. But I`m going to try and ponder it.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Gil, I couldn`t agree with you more. In fact, when I wrote a book about a lot of cases of violence against women, I said we have created a hunter/prey mentality between men and women in this country. And a lot of it is the media. It`s a lot of, I believe, just a horrific association between masculinity and violence that we need to erase.

What are your thoughts, Gil, on how we can perhaps change culture so that your precious, beautiful daughter did not die in vain?

G. HARRINGTON: You know, it is something that I think you have to start from young ages with children, that you`re training them not to beat up and not to act out. But you would think in 2010 that we would be working on issues of cherishing and upholding each other in relationships rather than can we just stop hurting each other. But unfortunately, that`s where we`re stuck. We have to disallow it.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Yes. Well, I think we have to change everything about our culture. We have to change the media. These little boys are trained sometimes from when they`re toddlers with video games to exhibit violence. And often the target in that violence is women. And it`s the same thing on TV shows. It`s the same thing in movies. And it feeds on itself.

And that`s why I say here on ISSUES I don`t want to be part of the pornography of violence. If we`re going to discuss a case like this, talk about solutions.

I think part of the solution also is really devoting resources. We spend billions of dollars on wars that go on for years. But we don`t spend the money to solve rape cases in a swift and efficient manner.

This story reminds me of the horror story involving Anne Pressley. And I think we have a photo of her. A beautiful Arkansas anchorwoman who was viciously raped and murdered. They didn`t have any idea who did it. Somebody broke into her house.

Well, it turns out they found a DNA match from an earlier rape that had been very slow in processing so they hadn`t gotten around to figuring out who that DNA was. But they matched; it was from a suspect 100 miles away. The two cities worked together and they solved the case and they arrested this Curtis Vance for this horrific killing.
Now, at the time, everybody said, Dr. Harrington, if they had just solved that first rape case earlier and processed that DNA more rapidly, that Anne Pressley might have been alive today. And I see a parallel here. And this happens all the time.

What are your thoughts, sir, about how we prioritize what we want to do in our culture?

D. HARRINGTON: Well, I believe you brought up the length of time that it took for the testing to be done. And the concern that we`ve had is exactly what you`ve talked about is that we now have an answer. But there have been months now where we`ve been waiting for these test results and that has been an opportunity for the individual to act out against someone else.

It hasn`t happened probably, but it would be a shame if now we look back and there is some other event that occurred because no one has arrested this man.

VELEZ-MITCHELL: I think it would be a total shame. And I really do hope that all the authorities work together to connect the dots and find the commonalities between these two cases five years apart and solve your daughter`s horrific murder. I hope and pray that that happens. And we`re going to stay on top of this case, I promise you.

And we`re going to make sure that your daughter`s story is not a cold case ever and that everything that can be done to bring this person to justice is done.
