Gil Harrington’s thoughts from September 10th, 2010
We met with the Virginia State Police today.  In the vast wasteland of our loss and grief we look to them for answers.  We have become increasingly angry with the lack of progress in the investigation of Morgan’s murder.

I work myself into a tizzy the night before these scheduled meetings with LE; planning the knuckle wrapping I will deliver all around.  But when they walk into the house and I look into their eyes I can see their fatigue and frustration.  It penetrates me to clearly see Ed and Dino bracing themselves to receive an angry diatribe from me. These are good men, working diligently to the fullest of their abilities, to find resolution to the horrific murder of Morgan.

I realize that the legitimate target of the consuming raging inferno of our anger about Morgan’s death is the person(s) that abducted her, raped her, butchered her, and abandoned her as refuse in a hay field.

Anything that distracts us from focusing squarely on that evil crime is wasted energy.  So I am learning patience and surrender – hard lessons.

Gil Harrington’s thoughts from September 13th, 2010
On September - 13 - 2010ADD COMMENTS
Our struggle with processing Morgan’s death is complicated by a duality of purpose.  A murder creates this dichotomy.  On one hand, we must submit and learn to accept the fact that Morgan is no more; her life is over.  We must relinquish our hopes and dreams – surrender.  At the same very time we must fight, stir ourselves to sound the alarm and amp up attention, concern and action because a killer is still on the loose and will most likely harm or kill again.

It is grueling and exhausting to struggle through the sludge and weight of our sadness and then try to overcome the established status quo that tries to sooth and minimize the vicious act that took Morgan’s life and poses continued danger.

There is an entrenched culture of violence and victimization against women and children in this country.  It has been ignored and allowed for some time. The very language used to describe assault and abduction seeks to minimize the inherent savagery of the acts committed.   In my verbiage, Morgan was not “missing” – she was snatched.  Things did not get “out of hand” – Morgan was assaulted and raped.  Morgan did not “pass away” –  she was murdered and slaughtered.

Soothing tones and soft language are appropriate when the evil monster is make-believe in a child’s bedtime story; not when he walks in your town.

I am reminded here on the cusp of the 9/11 anniversary, that the buildings’ occupants were soothed and directed back to their offices, back to business as usual., back to their deaths.

Be alert! You cannot queue up like placid sheep when evil is loose in the land.

Gil has a way with words.
She always makes me look at myself and my nation. She speaks for herself and a million lost souls and their families. She asks all of us a simple question. Why are we tolerating Evil at this extent in a civilized culture?

It is somebody elses misfortune..  None of my business. Poor kid.
Press the remote, Flip the channel...
A common thought in this world.

The powers that be encourage all of us to let the professionals handle it.. In every way. A limitation to all in my humble opinion.

If I deliver the bad guy to LE "breathing" should be good enough.
But nope, I will be prosecuted and put in prison if I do.
This limits good men from going after the bad guy.

Why is it that impoverished people will chase down the bad guy and kill him and why civilized cultures fall off cliffs to make sure criminals are given every chance at freedom. Even to the point of victimizing the victims family during the bad guys defense. In our efforts to not be discriminatory, on race, religion or vigilante justice we get lost and forget that a heinous act has occurred to a victim. A victim who can no longer defend themselves. By a bad person he may in fact come back and do further damage on release.
 That is not being civilized.

The big problem is that Civil Rights attorneys want everyone to focus on the accused persons rights. Human rights, there rights are violated in some way, even during the investigation process.
This keeps the bad people from prosecution and LE often times from investigating who they know is guilty of the crime.
It puts the bad people back out on the streets time and time again. Many people who commit heinous acts have a long criminal history of prior violent acts.

One of the few remaining things that keeps me from total desperation in this world is Scared Monkeys.  I know that no matter what there are people here who still care about the lost, murdered and missing.

U-Va. to install Harrington memorial
The University of Virginia will install a memorial marker at the Charlottesville bridge where Morgan Harrington was last seen alive.

The 20-year-old Virginia Tech student's remains were found in January, more than three months after she disappeared while attending a Metallica concert.

Tuesday, the U.Va. Board of Trustees approved the installation of a plaque on the Copely Road bridge. The marker will be dedicated Oct. 17, the one-year anniversary of her disappearance.

The investigation continues into Harrington's disappearance and death.

University of Virginia to Honor Life of Morgan Harrington
September 14, 2010 — The University of Virginia will install a plaque on the Copeley Road bridge in memory of Morgan Dana Harrington. The plaque will be dedicated Oct. 17, the one-year anniversary of her disappearance.

The U.Va. Board of Visitors approved plans for the memorial at its meeting today.

Harrington, a 19-year-old junior education major at Virginia Tech, was last seen alive on the bridge on Oct. 17, 2009, after she left a concert at John Paul Jones Arena. Her remains were discovered Jan. 26 on a farm about 10 miles south of Charlottesville, and the crime is still under police investigation.

"The loss of a beautiful young person with a bright future is one of life's greatest sorrows," said U.Va. President Teresa A. Sullivan. "We want to mark her passing in a formal way."

Well-wishers have been placing signs, flowers, painted rocks and other mementoes on the bridge since last fall. These will be removed and sent to the Harrington family on Oct. 4 in preparation for the dedication and memorial.

The plaque will be dedicated at a ceremony on Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. A showing of "A Gift for the Village," a film that has been dedicated to Harrington, and a reception at Newcomb Hall will follow. The film's creator, Jane Vance, taught Morgan Harrington at Virginia Tech, and Harrington appears briefly in the film.

"Morgan's disappearance, the hopeful search and later the heartbreaking discovery of her remains had an enormous effect on the University community," said Patricia Lampkin, U.Va.'s vice president and chief student affairs officer. "The plaque will preserve her memory for University students for years to come, and the film and reception will celebrate her life and her many interests."

This fall the University is emphasizing the idea that members of this community should take care of each other. "We hope, as I know the Harringtons do, that Morgan's memory will also serve as a reminder to our students that bad things can happen anywhere and that we all need to help keep ourselves and others safe from harm," Lampkin added.

Morgan Harrington's father, Dr. Daniel P. Harrington, completed his residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center and now works at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, with dual appointments at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the U.Va. School of Medicine. Her mother, Gil Harrington, is a 1979 graduate of the University's School of Nursing, and her brother, Alex Harrington, is a 2009 graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences.

"We are grateful to the University of Virginia for honoring the wondrous but abbreviated life of Morgan Dana Harrington by dedicating this memorial plaque on the site where Morgan was abducted," the Harrington family said in a statement. "Our family hopes that Morgan's tragic death will serve as a catalyst for community-wide rejection of violence and investment in a culture of interdependence and integrity that will promote safety for all."

The plaque will read:

In loving memory of

MORGAN DANA HARRINGTON
(1989-2009)
A student at our sister institution, Virginia Tech,
Ms. Harrington was last seen alive on this bridge
on October 17, 2009.

University of Virginia
Dedicated October 17, 2010

The pattern of dots on the plaque is the Harrington family's expression of their "two-four-one" farewell: "I love you too much, forever and once more."

Plaque to honor Harrington to go on bridge
By Brian McNeill
09/14/10
The University of Virginia will dedicate a plaque on the Copeley Road bridge in memory of slain Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington on the one-year anniversary of her disappearance.

UVa’s Board of Visitors unanimously approved plans for the memorial Tuesday.

Harrington, a 20-year-old junior education major, was last seen alive on the Copeley bridge on Oct. 17 after a Metallica concert at the John Paul Jones Arena. Her remains were discovered on Jan. 26 at a farm in Albemarle County. Police continue to investigate, but have made no arrests in the homicide.

Harrington’s mother, Gil Harrington of Roanoke, praised UVa’s plan to memorialize her daughter, saying it will serve as a reminder for UVa students to keep vigilant and protect themselves.

“We are really pleased to have this kind of acknowledgement in the community, not just because it memorializes our daughter but also because it serves as a point to remember each other and community safety,” she said.

The plaque will be affixed to a brick wall on the north end of Copeley bridge.

It will read: “In loving memory of MORGAN DANA HARRINGTON (1989-2009).

“A student at our sister institution, Virginia Tech, Ms. Harrington was last seen alive on this bridge on October 17, 2009.

“University of Virginia Dedicated October 17, 2010.”

The plaque’s series of black dots represents the Harrington family’s farewell expression: “I love you too much, forever and once more.”

An impromptu memorial has sprung up at the site, with mourners placing dozens of flowers, pictures, statues, painted rocks, an illuminated cross and posters offering a $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of her killer.

UVa will box up all of the memorial’s mementoes on Oct. 4 and ship them to Harrington’s parents in preparation for the plaque’s dedication on Oct. 17.

Following the dedication ceremony on that day, UVa will show a film called “A Gift for the Village” that was made by Virginia Tech professor Jane Vance and is dedicated to Harrington. Vance taught Harrington at Tech.

“Morgan’s disappearance, the hopeful search and later the heartbreaking discovery of her remains had an enormous effect on the university community,” Patricia Lampkin, UVa’s vice president and chief student affairs officer, said in a statement. “The plaque will preserve her memory for university students for years to
come, and the film and reception will celebrate her life and her many interests.”

The plaque was the idea of Lampkin and UVa President Teresa A. Sullivan, according to Gil Harrington. It will be the first memorial of its kind at UVa, officials said, but they expect it will be a fitting remembrance for such tragic and unusual circumstances.

“This is a bit unusual for the university to take an action like this,” said Leonard W. Sandridge, UVa’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “But this is an unusual situation.”

Gil Harrington’s thoughts from September 16th, 2010
On September - 16 - 2010

You can’t please all of the people all of the time. Dan and I are grateful to have a permanent stone memorial to Morgan on the bridge. We have worked very hard to ensure that the tragedy of murder not negate Morgan’s impact and value to the world. We believe that by creating legacy Morgan would still be a catalyst for good in the world, that the accomplishments of her short life would be acknowledged, and that Morgan would be remembered. From the beginning we have been determined that the evil that killed Morgan would not erase her. Yes, this memorial is a good thing. It’s hard to erase something written in stone.

Harringtons say social media has helped murder case
By Jarett Henshaw
Published: September 21, 2010
Gil and Dan Harrington say social media websites have had big impact on their daughter's murder case that's gone unsolved for nearly a year now.

"It has become a way to participate, give input, give another set of eyes.  It has been valuable,” said Gil Harrington.

After her daughter Morgan Harrington disappeared last October. They hired a public relations company to help manage the media attention they were getting.  Digital Strategist Valerie Elston headed up that effort and explained their methods at Roanoke College to a room full of other PR specialists from around the state.

"Without social media, I think the case probably would have died out in the media a lot faster,” said Elston.

Elston says people flooded to the Facebook page with tips, theories, and volunteered to help with search
efforts.

They also created findmorgan.com and used other social media like Twitter and YouTube to spread the word.  She says the campaign was the first of it's kind in the country for a missing persons case.

The Harrington's say the focus on Morgan's case wouldn't have been possible a few years ago using social media.

"This offers now a way for people to engage one another, discuss situations, and involve themselves in a way that three years ago, four years ago would have never happened and it has been very powerful for us,” said Dan Harrington.

Gil says the support and words of encouragement on these sites have also made the grieving process a little easier.

"It is very likely that the person who murdered Morgan peruses these pages and someone out there knows something,” said Dan.

Harrington says he believes that something will come out   He says the power of social media increases the odds that one day Morgan’s killer will be brought to justice.

State police are still looking for any information on this man... Who's d-n-a was found on Morgan’s body.  The man is a suspect in an abduction and sexual assault case in Fairfax from 2005.

If you have any information about that man or anything else in the case, call the Virginia State tip line at 434-352-3467.
