Update in Morgan Harrington case: Necklace wasn't with body
State police, who are trying to track down the jewelry, also said DNA links the case to another.

Morgan Harrington's remains were found Jan. 26, 2010.

In November 2009, police found a black T-shirt worn by Harrington the night she disappeared. They reported it had been found by a student in Charlottesville a few miles from the concert arena.

"We're not commenting on what other articles of clothing were not recovered with the remains," Geller said.

The initial police description reported that, in addition to the T-shirt, Harrington wore a black miniskirt, knee-high black boots and black tights. Cappuzzo said last week that the tights were akin to Lycra running tights and that many other young women wore similar outfits that night for the Metallica concert.

Gil Harrington, Morgan's mother, now wears the bracelet. Investigators have not yet returned the ring, which features an imprint copied from a ring owned by Gil's father.

On Tuesday, Gil Harrington estimated the large signet ring was worth about $800 to $900.

She said she had not realized authorities had not disclosed that the necklace remained missing.

Last week, hoping to elicit new leads, investigators held a walk-through for a small group of journalists of the crime's key events and locations. Gil and Dan Harrington, Morgan's father, participated. They said they were glad authorities were sharing a few more details that might trigger someone's memory or conscience.

Cappuzzo led the tour. He has said he does not know what the necklace might be worth.

On Tuesday, Gil Harrington estimated the value of the necklace, a gift to Morgan from her brother, at about $300 to $350.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told The Roanoke Times that when Harrington's remains were found, her Swarvoski crystal necklace wasn't there. Geller also said a state police investigator continues to check with pawn shops and flea markets, hoping the necklace will turn up.

Campus crime bill gets more scrutiny
Campus crime bill will be studied
BY CHELYEN DAVIS

RICHMOND

After Kathryn reported to University of Virginia campus police that she'd been raped in 2004, she felt her case was mishandled.

Her rapist was never charged, and Kathryn, who asked that her last name not be used, says he later raped another woman.

Kathryn believes that if Charlottesville city police had done the investigation, things might have been different.

Advocacy by her and her mother, Susan Russell, led Del. Paula Miller to propose a bill that would have required campus police to hand rape, sexual assault and murder cases over to local law enforcement.

Hours of sometimes emotional testimony yesterday led to legislators not passing the bill, but choosing instead to ask a legislative study arm to investigate not only the relationships between campus and local police, but also how well campus cops are handling sexual assaults.

Miller's bill originally would have required campus police to hand off those cases; she amended it yesterday morning to allow campus police or victims to ask the local police to intervene in such cases.

She said Tennessee and South Carolina have similar legislation, and that she had received numerous e-mails supporting her bill--including an e-mail from the parents of Morgan Harrington, the Blacksburg student who was killed in Charlottesville.

Kathryn said U.Va. campus police waited days to question her accused attacker and filed inaccurate reports that she says resulted in the local commonwealth's attorney being unable to bring charges in her case.

Police, Kathryn said, don't treat rape as the violent crime it is. They treat it as sex, she said, which is wrong.

"Rape has nothing to do with sex," she said. "When I was raped, I died."

'He's still here' And other new revelations in the Harrington case
By Courteney Stuart | stuart@readthehook.com

Morgan was an animal lover who hoped to work in education. She had planned to travel to Zambia during the spring of 2010 to work with her mother through the nonprofit Orphans Medical Network International. Following her death, the wing of a new school for orphans-- funded by donations after her death-- was named in her honor.

It was a Saturday night in October 2009. The air outside was chilly, and a light rain was falling as the visiting father finished dinner with his daughter at a Charlottesville restaurant and the two returned to his car. As the father drove his daughter back to her dormitory around 9:20pm, their path took them past John Paul Jones Arena, where a major event was underway.

Heavy metal group Metallica had taken the stage only minutes before, and fans who'd flocked from all over the East Coast had gathered inside. As the main event roared inside the Arena, the parking lots outside were full and lights were blazing, but Copeley Road was nearly devoid of pedestrians.

As the father and daughter traveled toward Ivy Road and over the railroad bridge, the ordinary ride suddenly took them past an unusual sight. A young woman, dressed all in black with long blond hair, was standing on the bridge with her thumb extended in the classic hitchhiking gesture.

The pair would soon learn that they were among the last to see Morgan Dana Harrington alive.

Dan Harrington says he and Gil will speak at a national convention for missing persons in Wisconsin next month, headlined by Beth Holloway, the mother of Natalie Holloway, who disappeared without a trace while vacationing in Aruba in 2005. Although Natalie is widely believed to have been killed by a Dutchman named Joran van der Sloot, who is currently imprisoned in Peru for allegedly murdering another woman on the fifth anniversary of Natalie's disappearance, van der Sloot has never been prosecuted in the Holloway case.

A Gift for the Village

In June of 2007, 7 friends left the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia on a trip to Nepal. Our mission was to deliver a painting of an amazing man in a remote village which sits at 12,000 feet in the Himalayas. The film that documents this cultural exchange is now finished, and in the summer of 2010, it was carried back to Nepal and shown there. The film premiered in the US on September 16 at the Taubman Museum in Roanoke before beginning a new journey around the country.
Upcoming Shows
Thanks to everyone who made our US premiere such a success.

We were honored to be a part of the University of Virginia's memorial service honoring Morgan Harrington in Charlottesville and to have shown our film at the Virginia Film Festival.

Virginia to retire Yeardley Love's number
02/17/11

Virginia will retire the No. 1 worn by Yeardley Love before its home opener on March 6 in Charlottesville. Love, the Virginia midfielder and Notre Dame Prep graduate, died last spring after she was assaulted in her off-campus apartment. Her ex-boyfriend, a Cavaliers' men's lacrosse player, has been charged with her murder.
Love's number will be retired in a ceremony to begin 10 minutes before the Cavaliers' 1 p.m. game with Penn State at Klockner Stadium.

A road rally dedicated to finding Morgan Harrington's killer returned to Charlottesville on Saturday.

Morgan's Warriors spent some time Saturday afternoon in the Seminole Square Shopping Center putting flyers on windshields and reminding people that Harrington's killer is still on the lose. The fliers show a composite sketch from a Fairfax sexual assault that police have linked by DNA to Harrington's death. ::snipping2::
