Gil Harrington’s Thoughts from July 11, 2011
On July - 11 - 20112 COMMENTS
My Dear Morgan,
We have spent several days at the beach. Initially, the solitude and the slower tempo are difficult for us. It takes a few more days to turn down the staccato cadence of our lives and follow, instead, the measured rhythm of the ocean. These natural rhythms are healing and calming, but hard to discern when you move so far away from source. It is vital for health to find a slower pace. Many treatment modalities are based on allowing intrinsic patterning to reestablish, like defibrillation for cardiac muscle – or meditation for the spirit. Sometimes, we just have to turn off and reboot to factory settings to function optimally.

Gil Harrington’s thoughts from August 8th, 2011
On August - 8 - 2011ADD COMMENTS
Dear Morgan;
We are excited. Alex is coming home for a few days and we are planning to take a short trip together. It is difficult to envision such a thing, a pleasure trip, but we must find new traditions for our triangulated family to survive, to one day thrive again. Contemplating these new travels returns my thoughts to ponderings I had of you at the beach a few weeks ago.
Morgan, there are flashes of you all around. I see your rounded toddler legs pumping up and down the beach, splashing in the surf like a little sandpiper. I see your towhead white in the sunlight like dandelion fluff. I see your skin bronzing and freckles dawning on your nose. I see you dragging surfboards and buckets full of treasured shells over the dunes. I remember the grit of sand ridden sheets, of course in our bed, introduced by baby feet at nap time snuggle. I love to think of you grown and sleek in the water jumping waves for hours with Dad and laughing all the while. I see glimpses of you in other young girls, Kate, Eva, Iris. I think of you whenever a gesture or turn of phrase reveals youth and promise. These little daily bursts, trigger my memory cascade.

Thank you Trimm. Gil's words always make me cry. I wish she would compile these letters to Morgan in a book, I would buy it. Morgan's bracelet is still on my wrist...

Smile! Mugshot mag flying off shelves
By Courteney Stuart |
stuart@readthehook.com
Published online 4:20pm Monday Aug 22nd, 2011
Getting arrested has never been something to boast about, and thanks to a new weekly publication, it may have gotten even more embarrassing.
Launched June 1, Crime Times offers page after page of mugshots of offenders booked on crimes ranging from disorderly conduct to first-degree murder. At a time when most local publications are free, this tabloid– distributed across Charlottesville and surrounding counties– sells for $1, and yet it's flying off the shelves.
::snipping2::
::snipping2::
Overhead is minimal, and McMurray says that with the exception of Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange (which has asserted that mugshots are exempt from disclosure), getting the pictures hasn't proven difficult. The father-son team are the sole employees, and they pay only for printing, distribution, and about $3 per mugshot.
While an ad for the bailbonding business 1-800-For-Bail ran for several weeks, ads in recent issues have featured only unsolved crimes or missing persons– and the McMurrays don't charge for those. In July, for instance, a full page was dedicated to the unsolved case of Morgan Harrington, the Virginia Tech student slain after a 2009 Metallica concert in Charlottesville.
"Hard to believe, but they had never heard about Morgan Harrington," says Kenny Jarels, a Harrington family supporter who created that ad. ::snipping2::

Gil Harrington’s Thoughts from August 25th, 2011
On August - 25 - 2011
Dear Mogo,
We are all taking on a bit of water just now. I am not exactly sure why. I think it has something to do with the time of year. This is the season when you were killed. It is also the start of school and all the promise that youth entails is on display at every corner, waiting for the school bus – or tiptoeing into the campus bookstore agog at new horizons. Those visas are closed to us now as we try to live an inexplicable life.

First and foremost, no one should have to mourn their child. I cannot begin to imagine the grief and anguish the Harringtons feel each day. Gil's mother heart shows in her mission to save the next girl. To that end, I am posting this. This will probably not be a popular post, but if it changes the way one person thinks or acts, it's worth any flaming or banning I may get.
I've been reluctant to post in Morgan's thread for fear of being accused of blaming the victim. Morgan did not ask to or plan to be murdered. There are two parts to the equation here: a predator and a victim. In reality, had Morgan not been chemically impaired (re: VSP's refusal to release toxicology reports "out of respect for the victim's family"), this likely would have had a different outcome. To that end, that's the message I hope that Mrs. Harrington is carrying to the groups she addresses. Yes, a predator was definitely hunting (and likely continues to do so), but young women do not have to become victims. Somehow there's an expectation that exists that young people drinking alcohol/taking drugs, before/during an event, attended by hundreds-thousands of strangers (many of whom are also impaired)-all in the name of having a good time together (just "kids being kids")-is a safe, benign activity. That's not only naive, but deadly. The reality is, that we live in a perverted world, where there are perverted predators looking for victims. Check your state's RSO pages if you don't believe me. We cannot afford to allow our young people to think otherwise. Big events like concerts, with impaired young ladies, are the perfect hunting ground. Our families, our society, have got to train our young people to make wise decisions so that they can live and not die...decisions that will keep them
out
of harm's way. "A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge..." (hides himself from it, avoids it) Proverbs 22:3. In Morgan's case, it literally became a life or death decision; the impairment causing Morgan to get locked out of JPJ, wander alone (and reportedly wounded/dazed) across the parking lot, and hitchhike on a bridge (something everyone who knows her said she would never normally do) to be picked up by a predator. Choices are what put her in harm's way. We'll never be able to stop every predator this side of Heaven, so we have got to train our young people-much the same way we train them not to touch the stove, not to cross the street before looking both ways, not to talk to strangers, etc. Poor Morgan had no idea of the danger when she made those choices and she suffered horribly for it. Her family is suffering horribly for it. We have got to teach, train, and warn the others. We've got to be the watchmen on the walls, so to speak. I apologize if I've offended anyone, but we cannot afford to lose even one...one is too many.

I never let a post in Morgan's thread go by that I do not read. I wear a bracelet on my arm and frequently a shirt for her. I am not offended. I think of those few times when I could have made a similar mistake, or my kids could have. No matter that I really did know better, and I've tried to teach my kids better. The price to be paid for a few minutes or seconds of thoughtlessness are horrifying. It happens every day and there are times lately that it hurts so much to read about another missing person that I can hardly do it.......

It is unfathomable..it is heartbreaking..and we need to take back our towns, our streets and our lives..and those of all humans. Crime in this country is rampant compared to many western nations..and it continues to rise. We need to start a culture not just of making people aware..but of really finding and punishing the criminals among us. Too often the reward is outweighed by the punishment...look at the stats..most crimes are not punished..nor are the perps found out..many unsolved missing cases..many murders never to be resolved..and many people prosecuted to get out of jail in a remarkably short time for the heinous things they have done. We just aren't tough on crimes in this country..we molly coddles our prisoners and give very short sentences ..if we prosecute at all.

- Thank you for not being offended. Like you, I've made my share of mistakes and try to pass that on to the young people in my life. It sounds like you have wisdom that comes with both age and experience...the kind of wisdom our young people need to be taught. I know how you feel when you read about yet another missing person. It's like, "When is this going to end???". I have to think part of it, is that our society has devalued human life in so many ways (abortion, pornography, trafficking, assisted suicide initiatives, a longstanding culture of acceptable bullying, the prevailing concept of relativism taught in most American schools -"If it feels right to you, then it's right., the whole "hooking-up"-using people for your own pleasure culture, etc.). Our schools have spent the better part of the last 30 years keel-towing to the educational philosophy that children's self-esteem is "harmed" by being told they're wrong and that we shouldn't correct them. Having teachers in my family, as well as having been told this repeatedly by numerous newly retired teachers, we've created a segment of our society that is self-centered, lacking self-control, and rebellious against authority. Is it any wonder crime (serious crime) has been on a steady incline for the last few decades? Add to that, the lack of swift and sure punishment and opportunist defense attorneys, and it's a recipe for disaster.
If you need to step away at times, no shame there. I do so too. It bothers us because we do have an appreciation for human life. These aren't just stats to us; they belong to someone, they are loved by someone. That's why I'm glad to have found this site. I came for Natalie and stayed.

-ITA with you! It's past time to take back our towns, communities, judicial system, and our nation. This slap-em on the wrist and give them a second/third/fourth/fifth chance approach hasn't worked for years. It's time to bury it. When there were stiff penalties: crime stayed down, justice prevailed, people were safer and they had peace of mind, people were free to live and go freely about (in most areas), and a large percentage of would be criminals were discouraged by those penalties. Not so, these days. They know the most time they "may" get and the majority of that is usually suspended. Part of the psychological babble of not harming someone's self-esteem is evident in that we no longer call criminals, criminal. We use "soft" language like offender and ex-offender/former offender. Likewise, we have correctional facilities instead of jails, correctional officers rather than jailers. In our rush to "rehabilitate" criminals, we've rendered punishment (and therefore, the victim) mute. Justice has been redefined. It no longer means holding someone accountable for the crime they have committed. It no longer involves punishment, restitution, or consequences. Our little 1960-2011 social experiment is a miserable, measurable failure with jail overcrowding at an all time high and a steady influx of increasingly violent crimes. More and more citizens are choosing to arm themselves and rightfully so. When you can't go to the mall, a restaurant, or even a local school (elementary,high, or college) without an emergency exit plan, something is drastically wrong. My opinion.
