Morgan Harrington's parents made a stop in Charlottesville as they continue to keep the community's attention on the search for their daughter's killer. Dan and Gil Harrington walked in Saturday morning's Holiday Heritage parade on Charlottesville's downtown mall.

Emotions glisten at Tech vigil
A few thousand people gathered on the Drillfield on Friday to mourn, remember and try to find healing.

Hokie Nation and the Blacksburg community took a step toward coping with Thursday's police shooting at a well-attended candlelight vigil Friday evening.

The Drillfield flooded with small flames to commemorate fallen Virginia Tech police Officer Deriek Crouse, as a few thousand people met to pay respects, find healing and try to make sense of it all.

"Let us not be defined only by our response in tragedy. We know we are more than that," faculty member Susanna Rinehart said.

The program, hosted by Hokies United, consisted of speakers offering thoughts and a poem as participants held lit candles.

Many held their children tightly, some hugged their spouses while in tears, and others silently prayed or reflected. Police officers from agencies throughout the area were present.

Student Government Association President Corbin DiMeglio read a letter written by Lt. Joe Rader, a Virginia State Police officer who has helped work the case of missing Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington.

In the letter, Rader noted that he didn't respond to the shootings Thursday, but in his 26 years has witnessed numerous violent and senseless deaths.

"How do any of us learn to deal with these type of tragedies? Where do we go from here, and how can we keep our faith?" Rader said in his letter.

Rader's answer was to maintain his belief in God. He stressed that the community must once again come together and help each other, while honoring the lives that were lost and supporting those who put their lives on the line every day.

Gil Harrington’s thoughts from January 9th, 2012
On January - 10 - 2012

My Dearest Morgan,
We have passed the threshold of another Christmas, our third! without you. I realize we have grown stronger from carrying the pain for so long, but it doesn’t get easier. Bad days are still fraught with anguish and good days less desperate though still flat, sad, and laced with disbelief. I know irrevocably, viscerally, that you are dead but somehow still question this reality. How can it be that you are over? Really?

Morgan, you had such a hard time separating. That first year at VT was so rough on you. We thought it was because you were such a homebody, happy to have the foundation of family. I worry now instead, if you knew in an instinctive way that separation would be the death of you. Should we have listened differently?

Pain and frustration: Two years later, 'We know her agonies'
By Courteney Stuart | stuart@readthehook.com
Published online 4:00am Saturday Jan 21st, 2012

They'll never have their daughter back, but for the parents of murdered Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, the unsolved status of the case two years after her body was discovered in a remote pasture on a southern Albemarle County farm is added anguish.

"It doesn't get easier," says Morgan's mother, Gil Harrington, a week before the grim January 26 anniversary. If the mystery has begun to fade from the national spotlight, it still has legions of followers thanks in part to coverage on national programs including Nancy Grace and the Investigation Discovery channel's Disappeared.

The latest, Harrington says, is that, although an air date hasn't yet been set, America's Most Wanted is planning an episode. Locally, the Charlottesville band Howard/Johnson & Friends has written a song that's one-third inspired by the Harrington case.

 ::snipping2::
In the summer of 2010, familial DNA helped California investigators nab the serial killer dubbed the Grim Sleeper, the tool is no guarantee, since only individuals who have been arrested for a violent felony contribute their genetic material to the state databank.

In March, Governor Bob McDonnell gave the go-ahead for investigators to use the process in Virginia, and the Harrington case was believed to be among the first in line. Nearly a year later, with no fresh leads announced in the case, has familial DNA search turned up any matches?

"We can't comment on active investigations," says Pete Marone, director of the Virginia Department of Forensic Science. Of cases in general, Marone says, even if there is no hit initially, familial searches are run periodically to check against new samples in the DNA databank. If the Harringtons feel frustration over the lack of an arrest, they aren't letting it stop them from using the legal system. In October, the mom sued RMC Events, the firm providing security at John Paul Jones Arena, to get answers about her daughter's last hours.

"This," Gil Harrington said at the time of her filing, "is about retaining our ability to ask those questions."

In addition, the Harringtons have launched Help Save the Next Girl, a nonprofit ad campaign and website aimed at raising awareness of missing people and providing support to victims' families. Harrington notes that among such families, the Harringtons have something to be thankful for.

"The visceral part of finding the body is big," says Gil Harrington, who says being able to bury Morgan's remains, to memorialize her life, is something many families never get.

"It's a sharp day, but boy we are glad to have had it," she says. "Not to be forever in limbo and mentally filling in the gaps. We know her agonies."

2 years after body found, justice for Morgan Harrington is elusive
The Roanoke County woman's family has pressed to keep the case in the public eye.
By Duncan Adams

Two years ago today, a farmer in Albemarle County found the skeletal remains of Morgan Harrington, the 20-year-old Roanoke County woman and Virginia Tech student whom state police believe was abducted Oct. 17, 2009, in Charlottesville after leaving a rock concert in progress that night.

Her death was ruled a homicide. Her killer or killers have not been found.

Gil and Dan Harrington said they plan to be in Charlottesville today to "mark this grisly anniversary" and "honor our murdered daughter, who was stolen from us."

The couple has worked hard to keep the case in the public eye, emphasizing repeatedly that they want the killer caught before he strikes again.

"More than fear that the trail is growing cold is my fear that this predator is getting antsy and looking around for his hit," Gil Harrington said in an email Wednesday.

"He is bold and feels invincible. It has been two years; his evil compulsion grows. That is scary," she said.

She said they want the killer captured through an investigation and not via a DNA link to another body.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate.

Gil Harrington’s Thought on this Grisley Anniversary
On January - 26 - 2012

Grisly Anniversary
When they brought your body back to me
There were just bones to see.
Didn’t look like my baby – Morgan D.
No golden hair, no sparkly eyes
Broken ribs – ugly surprise.
Disposable girl they all said
Skirts too short
Lips’re too red
Askin for it they all said
But what you asked for, screamed for, was mercy and release
Know you got no mercy, pray you found some peace
