Gil Harrington’s Thoughts on July 24, Which Would Have Been Morgan’s 24th Birthday
July 24, 2013

Loss is a resolute and determined teacher.  Like the pounding surf it can sculpt beautiful shapes; if you can tolerate the process, the destruction and reconfiguration.  That is a choice, a difficult daily choice of surrender to what it is, let go of what was and if you are particularly clever at times, there is joy to discover in what is unfolding here and now.

Morgan, you taught us so much. I believe that showing us how to grow strong enough to deal with your death is an infinitely precious final lesson.  Morgan your death gives us the opportunity to move into greater insight and greater love.

I get that, I really do and believe it.; though it ain’t always easy to see.  Everyday has so many snares that try to pull me into negativity and self-pity.   Walking Kirby, I see neighbors strapping grand babies into car seats and wonder why that joy was never meant for us.

So very sad.

t was an emotional meeting at Chandler's Bakery in Albemarle Square Saturday afternoon as Gil Harrington spoke with Alexis Murphy's family for the first time. They say are linked by a devastation they would not wish on anyone else.

"My daughter was not misplaced, Alexis was not misplaced.  They were stolen; they were ripped from their lives," Harrington said.

Gil Harrington and Laura Ann Murphy share a tragic bond over their only daughters.

"They know exactly what I'm going through, and that really helps that I can talk to someone that has been through this," Murphy said.

Murphy & Harrington family ask for your help

ROANOKE, VA -

These two mothers came together to give each other support even over the phone. They share the sorrow of missing their two young daughters.

"We need her back bad," Laura Murphy, Alexis' Mother says.

"We're sending you lots of prayers and all the strength we have and I can't wait to see you and your big gorgeous family on Friday," Gil Harrington, Morgan's mother tells Laura over the phone.

Gil Harrington says she knows what it's like for Laura Murphy to be missing her 17-year old daughter Alexis. Her daughter, Morgan, was missing for more than three months back in 2009. That was before her family found out the deviating news, that Morgan had been abducted and murdered.

"I recognize the shattered look on the Murphy family faces. I know what it's like and the phone would ring and you're hoping its a call and you're afraid too," Harrington says.

Help Save The Next Girl

On October 17, 2009 Morgan Dana Harrington was abducted and murdered. On August 3, 2013 Alexis Murphy was abducted, and is still missing. People are disappearing. These people are our neighbors, our sisters, our friends, and they could be any one of us. We present this PSA to help raise awareness about this very real problem. We need to look out for one another and arm ourselves with the knowledge of personal safety. Contact your local law enforcement agency about taking part in a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) course. This is how we will Help Save The Next Girl.

Metallica VT shirts raise thousands for 'Morgan Harrington Fund'
Posted: Oct 09, 2013 6:10 PM CST Updated: Oct 10, 2013 4:44 PM CST

Metallica band members continue to honor Morgan Harrington.

Harrington was abducted and murdered after one of the rock bands concerts. Virginia Tech wanted to create t-shirts with Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' written on the front.

'Enter Sandman' is the song that plays when the football teams takes the field. The university could sell the shirt under one condition from Metallica. The band members said their portion of the proceeds must go to the 'Morgan Harrington Fund.' In the year, the t-shirts have raised more $61,000.

Families of missing teens search for answers
Four Central Virginia families, separated from their missing children, are connected by the questions that remain

Though their stories may differ, the families of the missing bear a similar scar.
“We are in a really small club,” said Gil Harrington, mother of Morgan Harrington, who disappeared in 2009. “Few people go through this.”
Harrington has a tattoo of seven dots on her wrist to symbolize “241.” For the Harringtons, the numbers symbolize, “I love you too much, forever, plus one.” Harrington bid this farewell to her daughter in their last moment together.

From her family’s townhouse in Orange County, Samantha Clarke’s image looks out from a large window. Below it, in white letters, read the words, “Still missing.”

Lolita Smith drives back and forth to Charlottesville City Council meetings asking for more efforts to find her grandson, Dashad Smith. Jostling down the road, the tassel from Dashad’s graduation cap dangles from the rearview mirror, marking the pride she felt the day he graduated from high school.

Driving through Nelson County, the family of Alexis Murphy rarely passes a street corner not dressed with a pink ribbon. It is Alexis’ favorite color; tied there with the hope the ribbons will guide the missing teen home.
