all i hear is rumor, it boiled down to "who wants to hire the sire of the liar?" to be their lawyer.

so, the Sweater could not attract or pull-in enough business or pull his own weight in whatever job arrangement he had.

secondly, the Sweater had some habits that hindered his professional life, (1) he was exceedingly lazy, (2) liked to gamble,

which is a loser's game, and (3) the Sweater and wife became to poster people for the dysfunctional family. Weaker rumors

circulated about his inability to account for some joint funds held for his business.

(As an aside, i see most lawyers as trying to "keep busy" since time and talent is their stock and trade. Aruba, as a corrupt

Of course -- this pertains to the US, but if Aruba has similar rules (funny -- Aruba and rules in the same sentence) -- this is what Antonio Carlos was able to avoid since the company was dissolve prior to Paulus's untimely passing.

What If Your Business Partner Died Tonight?

There's nothing quite like the business relationship between partners (or, for that matter, co-owners of a closely-held company). In fact, you probably spend more time with your partner than you do with your spouse. Ideally your business partner is one of your business' greatest assets. But that person is also your greatest potential liability. Ask yourself a few key questions: What if my partner died suddenly — perhaps tonight? What would happen to the business? What would happen to my family and my partner's family? These may not be the most pleasant questions, but they're ones you cannot afford to ignore.

Why? Because the danger is real. The odds that one of you will die prior to retirement are a lot higher than you might think.

Now imagine what can happen to the business when a co-owner dies. The results can be disastrous — and usually are. Conflicting concerns between the surviving owners and the deceased's family are fairly common, as everyone becomes concerned about the future. Depending on the deceased partner's role in the business, ongoing business problems might occur on top of that. As suppliers take a nervous wait-and-see position, creditors become antsy for payment and refuse to extend additional credit. Customers may back away. Valued employees may leave. In short, problems compound, feed on themselves.

Four Choices
What are your options? If your business partner died tonight, you and the other survivors would have four choices:

   1. You could liquidate the business and distribute the remaining assets. Of course, in the process, you would do away with your own source of income, as well as with a business enterprise in which you've invested a great deal of time and money. Plus, the business assets might only sell for a fraction of what they are worth.
   2. You could take in your late partner's heirs as your new associates. However, keep in mind that a successful partnership is a delicately balanced relationship. Except in rare situations, bringing on board a deceased partner's spouse or other heir can be difficult.
   3. You could sell out to the heirs. This also rarely works. Starting with an almost inevitable tug-of-war over the purchase price, the situation usually goes downhill from there.
   4. You (and other partners) could buy out the surviving heirs' share of the business. This, in most cases, is the most practical course of action. Once again, however, there are the problems of establishing price and terms, as well as coming up with the money.

The Buy-Sell Concept is Simple
A properly arranged and funded agreement is a legally binding contract that spells out exactly what is to happen if one of the business's owners dies. The document itself can be as simple or complex as needed and can provide for virtually any contingency. However, it generally calls for the survivors to buy — and their heirs to sell — the deceased owner's share in the business. Just as important, it should spell out the actual purchase price or, more commonly, provides an objective formula for determining the price when needed.

Retirement
You don't have to retire! That's one of the nice perks of being self-employed or a business owner. You're a doer. You like to make decisions and see results. But maybe someday — perhaps when you're 65, 75 or older — you just might want the option to trade the fun and frustration of work for golf, gardening, vacationing with the grandkids or sitting back and relaxing with family and friends. Just as important, you also want to have all your ducks in a row, so to speak, when it comes to making sure your loved ones are well provided for in the future.

Neither of these goals just happens. It is the result of planning, of decisions you make today. Because, as the old saying goes: Those who fail to plan... fail. That means retirement planning and estate planning... mapping out a strategy to create options for you and for your family.

Hi Sharon

The coincidental timing of the partnership disolving along with the death of Paulus does raise my hinky meter.  It appears that affairs were in the process of being put in order.

There are so many unanswered questions encompassing the passing of Paulus that this  detective wannabe at times leans towards a possible conspiracy but ... when all is taken into consideration ... I just do not know what to think.

But wasn't he already the sire of the liar when Carlo hired him?

This is a relatively new partnership -- after Natalee disappeared.

After Carlo was hired to be Joran's attorney. And was fired once, iirc, by the court? -- for visiting one of the security guards in jail? But was suddenly allowed back on the case.

It's not like Carlo did not know Paulus VanderSloot when he made him his partner.

And didn't someone recently post that Carlo is now a sports photographer. Every attorneys' career path.

I swear -- you cannot make this stuff up.

Hi Janet

ITA -- I don't know what to think.

But I do remember in the early days of the forum, Frank would remind us 'there are NO coincidences in a murder investigation'.

Yet, Aruba never seems to run out of coincidences and 'convenient' events.

Beginning with "we'll let them go for 10 days so we can watch them"

ANTONIO CARLOS

NANCY GRACE - August 11, 2006

BETH HOLLOWAY TWITTY: Oh, absolutely. It is correct, Nancy. And you know, we really weren`t surprised that they awarded Paulus this money. We go back and we remember that Paulus Van Der Sloot and Antonio Carlo have been connected since the very beginning and really just kind of running the show. I mean, the defense attorneys seemed to be running the show in Aruba last summer. So it doesn`t surprise us at all that he would prevail again here.

ANTONIO CARLO

Live and Direct - Jane Velez-Mitchell - December 30, 2005

ANTONIO CARLO, JORAN VAN DER SLOOT`S ATTORNEY: OK, the information that I can provide at this time is that my client, under the Aruban law, cannot be obligated to come before the (INAUDIBLE) prosecutor to answer questions because he has now -- he has been released without any conditions. So under Aruban -- under Aruban law, he cannot be obligated to be brought forth to answer questions.

Holloways sue Dutch teen over disappearance
17 February 2006

Joran is represented by lawyer Antonio Carlo, who is also Paulus van der Sloot's boss on Aruba.

Carlo indicated he was not happy about Joran's trip to America for the ABC interview. "I'm on Aruba, you can draw your own conclusions," he said.

Paulus van der Sloot joined Carlo's legal firm as a lawyer in January this year.

Antoinio Carlo is the man who told Karin Janssen that Joran was guilty but it was up to her to prove it.
That was uncoverd by Peter DeVries in his first broadcast about Natalee's case

That was before Paulus became a partner in the Carlo/Van der Sloot Law Firm.

Usually one has to buy into a firm to be a partner and have their name on the door.

I wonder if Paulus "bought in" and then gambled away the money he used to buy in without
Antoinio Carlo's knowledge?

The reason Antonio Carlo told Janssen that Joran was probably guilty is because it was another distraction. One of many reasons they try to claim this is a mystery is because they have focused on Joran more than Paulus and his house.

Maybe it's me but as time goes by it becomes even more clear and there are no coincidences. Anita out of town, the casino, "your own father, unbelievable", the only one charged with premeditated murder and on and on.

Joran is a product of Paulus but his behavior was not out of the ordinary that night, Paulus on the other hand.

Who had the most to lose? Even a date rape gone bad with an underage perp would not have damaged Aruba permanently. But a Dutch judge doing this, has implications that would warrant what we've seen from Aruba.

THE EXERCISE OF A LAW FIRM.

Maybe....

Before May 30, 2005
Carlo has a well established law practice before becoming involved in the Natalee Holloway case.

Between May 30, 2005 and January 2006
When it's decided that Paulus won't ever become a judge and goes begging for a job to Rudy Croes (iirc), someone twists Carlo's arm a bit to allow Paulus into the firm.

January 2007
When the Supreme Court states there's enough evidence to indicate that Paulus could have been involved in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway; Carlo and Vandersloot is formed to protect the original law practice from any ramifications of a future prosecution of Paulus?

I stand with the girl, Natalee Holloway.

"I can look back over the past 10 years and there were no steps wasted, and there are no regrets,'' she said. "I did all I knew to do and I think that gives me greater peace now." "I've lived every parent's worst nightmare and I'm the parent that nobody wants to be," she said.
