Pretty frightening Carnut, plus Anna recently informed me that a product mr none had installed and I had recommended to others, is now infected with viral keyboard loggers as well - Spybot. Even though I run viral and anti-spyware daily, as well as my updates, my desktop is now infected and I am still in the process of trying to eliminate it.
Cisco just acquired a security software company for 830M to afford them the opportunity to build greater security within their servers and hardware for the internet. As they are reporting, this area of skill is growing at 25% annually.
I just hope the hackers don't win the war here...

Carnut.....what is your opinion on protecting your computer information....and do you keep personal information in your computer?
Well, lessee, just like a recent court case is being discussed in the MSM right now, putting personal info on the Web dosen't mean keeping it private, no matter what the lady involved thinks, guess we'll see what the court thinks.
I think of the internet literally as 'the information highway', don't do anything on the internet that you wouldn't do on a public highway.
Now on a personal computing level. I avoid allowing a browser or a web site to keep track of a password or any personal/financial info 'for me'.
Convenience for you is also convenience for hackers.
I ordered 100% of my Christmas presents online as I have for the last 8 or 9yrs, but I never trusted a website to store my credit card info 'for my convenience' for future orders. Course before that I relied on catalog ordering over the phone and in the last 20yrs only had my credit card info taken and used twice, once for purchases in San Diego and once for a porn service on the internet, both times just called and disputed purchases and changed credit card numbers.
I try very hard not to reveal too detailed of personal info in postings. Course my definition of 'personal info' is quite a bit different from most folks here. I am quite proud of who I am and what I have done, just don't want anyone checking out my checking account.
I surf the internet with the same caution that I use when frequenting a seedy establishment or less respectable urban areas, I try to keep aware of my situation and be quite as circumspect as possible.
Kinda like a carnival, many things being hawked aren't what they may seem to be.
I run only free or open source anti-virus/spyware programs. Those are the only kind than can survive on continuing goodwill and not advertisements or major industry support, they have to work to make sure they do their job.
I've had online banking exclusively for the last 8 or 9 yrs as well, so I guess you could say I have personal info online, but I trust the bank to handle their security and to stand up for any loss of info they may have.
In the last year or so, I've received two letters informing me that my personal info may have been revealed to or stolen by untrusted types.
One from the V.A. and one from the Boeing company, both for info that had been stored on employees laptops and misplaced.
So, even if you don't store anything online or in your own computer it's still 'out there' and susceptible because of others negligence that you can't even control. But then again I don't worry about it too much because the chances of anyone finding that info and using it against me is just about as probable as winning a lottery and I haven't won many of those yet.
So, did that answer your question MeMere?

- I'm much like you. I've been ordering online and banking online for years. I have never had a problem.
I also reveal very little personal information about myself.
I have several different passwords I use for different types of transactions/sites.

Carnut....that was perfect...you were reading my mind....
You touched on all of the things I have thought about except for the free
or open source anti-virus spyware programs. You are very middle of the road which I like....if let loose, I would be a nut on these things and would not enjoy being here...so...thank you...!

MeMere, I have a small spiral notebook that I keep on the shelf by my computer. If I register somewhere and need a screenname and password, I write it down there.
I also read that for online transactions, if they ask for your mother's maiden name, date of birth or your pet's name or other info
just for identification
purposes, LIE. Make it up. Of course, then you have to write it down in case you ever need it. The point is, you don't want that info out there. (Pet's names are often used in passwords.)
