What are the symptoms of canine diabetes?  My Mom is a diabetic, and so was my grandfather, so I am familiar with the human disease. Is it similar in dogs?

I hope Toby can pull through. I have you and your furry baby in my prayers, MeMere.

Hi pdh3....with my dog it was increased thirst...drinking bowls full....and getting up to go out during the night....plus gobbling down food...any food....brand new behavior(S) and I mentioned it to vet in Florida who tested him...his blood sugar was near 600 and she took him everywhere with her...even home at night...in order to get him stable.

Memere, interesting... those are also the main signs of cushings.  Only sugars are fine, liver enzymes high on blood panel testing.  usually first test done.

Will keep your baby in my thoughts and prayers...

beans...not boring at all!
My middle daughter wants to be a vet. She is gifted in chemistry, math and biology, and loves animals with a passion. I like to pass this stuff on to her. She will be interested in this subject, and in finding out about Cushings.
The symptoms of diabetes in dogs is just like the symptoms in humans.....very good to know. My much loved golden retriever is only 3 years old, but you never know what can happen.

Many helpful sites out there, but the one that saved my dog is
caninecushings.net   Very knowledgeable, caring dog owners with years of experience dealing with it.  They know much more than many vets.  The thing with vet medicine is that there are very few specialists.... believe it or not NONE in my whole state!   Shocked

People are spending more money on health care for their dogs and some vets are stepping up to the plate and learning new things while others are content to assume you won't question them and they don't even look at the reference guides before diagnosing and getting paid for it to boot.

Your daughter can use that talent and contribute greatly.  If she is like you, I am sure she will!

Two things to report.....first, the vet was very impressed that I was on a canine diabetes website and had learned a great deal about the insulins...in some cases, more than he knew at this time....and....he called not long ago to tell me that Toby had retained some water and some food and that he looked better...still sort of drunk though....and he will call again tomorrow.  He "did not want to give me too much encouragement" but I do feel better tonight... Smile  Thanks you folks....

It is nice of him to call but frankly I had rather that he would have spent the hours on the websites doing research.   Laughing  Laughing Sorry, I am getting cynical after my experience.  I did find a great vet out of the deal but...
