Does Cancun have a Natalee Holloway type missing persons case on their hands?

Macomb Teen Missing In Cancun
Family Fears She Was Lured By Man

POSTED: Friday, January 29, 2010
UPDATED: 4:21 pm EST January 30, 2010

CANCUN, Mexico -- A 16-year-old Macomb Township teen went missing while vacationing with her grandmother and great grandmother in Cancun, Mexico.

Family members said they checked into Great Parnasus Hotel last Saturday and Amy Vargas disappeared on Thursday shortly after she spoke to her mother by phone.

"She said, 'I'm with grandma. I'm fine. I love you and I'll see you soon,'" said Vargas' mother D'An Simmons.

Vargas' grandmother said while they were at the pool, Vargas asked to use the restroom and never returned.

Authorities want to talk to a resort employee who they believe left the property with the girl and two other men.

Simmons said she is convinced her daughter did not go willingly.

"She would have called me, she would have called my mom or maybe even her friends," she said.

Vargas attended Dakota High School in Macomb. Family said she has many friends but does not know anyone in Cancun.

Investigators who tried to track Vargas through her cell phone said it appears the phone was turned off shortly after she disappeared.

Missing Teen Found Safe In Mexico

Southfield (WWJ)  -- A teenaged Macomb County girl, who was reported missing while vacationing in Cancun, has been found safe.

The FBI in Detroit issued a statement that said "Amy Vargas, of Eastpointe, Michigan, was recovered today in Mexico. Vargas has been returned safely to her family."

Further details were unavailable.

Her family said Vargas was vacationing with her grandmother and great-grandmother at the Great Parnasus Hotel when she disappeared last Thursday.

Various media reports said Vargas' grandmother said that while they were at the pool, Vargas asked to use the restroom and never returned.  Another report said a manager at the hotel said Vargas had called and said she was okay before her cell phone was shut off.

Missing teen returned to family

Published: Monday, February 1, 2010
The FBI announced Monday that Amy Vargas, the 16-year-old Macomb Township high school student reported missing last week in Mexico, is alive and has been returned to her parents.

Sunday it was reported a manager at the Great Parnassus Resort in Cancun heard a voicemail from Amy's grandmother's cell phone.

Then Monday morning the FBI’s Detroit field office, in a short press release, announced Vargas was recovered in Mexico and has been returned safely to her family.

The teen, who attends Dakota High School in Macomb Township, disappeared last Thursday in Cancun where she was on vacation with her grandmother and great-grandmother. Authorities said she was last seen going to use the restroom during a baseball game on the beach.

Diane Blain, Director of School/Community Relations at Chippewa Valley Schools said school district officials were taking measures to address the needs of Dakota High students who may need help coping with the news
We do know they have assembled a school crisis team at the school for students hearing the media reports, who may be upset or concerned or anyone needing assistance,” she said.

Blain said she spoke with Dakota High School Principal Tom Heethuis early Monday morning, and he reported the crisis team was “ready, prepared and able” to address any needs concerning Amy’s disappearance. Blain said she don’t know if students had taken advantage of counseling services yet.

“It’s awful,” she said. “We know very little. We are like everyone else in the community, waiting to for news from Mexico. We are hoping for her safe return.”

-- Journal Register News Service and Voice staff writer Jeri Packer contributed to this report.
