Jennifer Rodriguez, mom of missing boy Patrick Alford, arrested for pulling knife on boyfriend
December 14, 2010

The Staten Island mother whose son's disappearance nearly a year ago set off one of the largest NYPD manhunts in recent memory was arrested for threatening a boyfriend with a knife, officials said Tuesday.

Jennifer Rodriguez, whose 8-year-old son Patrick Alford vanished from foster care in January, allegedly waved the blade at her lover and screamed "You're not getting your f---ing money back," according to court documents.

Rodriguez, 23, was charged with menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment, according to a spokesman for the Staten Island District Attorney.

Prosecutors said Rodriguez let Sehadi Gjeshditraj stay at her Van Buren St. apartment Sunday night, and the man realized hours later he left his wallet behind.

When he tried to retrieve it, Rodriguez allegedly confronted him with the blade and refused to give back his money.

The woman - who fell under suspicion when her son disappeared but was never charged - was arrested at her home just before 9 p.m.

Her arraignment was delayed because she checked into Elmhurst Medical Center with an undisclosed ailment, according to the DA's spokesman.

Patrick was placed with a foster family in East New York just three weeks before he disappeared while taking out the trash Jan. 22.

Police knocked on more than 14,000 doors and conducted more than 6,000 interviews during the intensive search, which stretched from East New York to Puerto Rico.

Authorities were so convinced that Rodriguez was hiding Patrick that a Staten Island judge briefly jailed her for contempt as authorities canvassed her New Brighton neighborhood.

She was later released and has claimed to have passed two lie-detector tests about her son.

This week's arrest is not the first time Rodriguez has run afoul of the law.

She was busted earlier this year for aggravated harassment after she attacked a romantic rival. She was also arrested a year ago for shoplifting, and Patrick was taken from her custody after she admitted to a drug problem.

In October, she sued the city and the Administration for Children's services, claiming that Patrick was given to a unfit guardian.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The father of a young Staten Island boy who went missing from a Brooklyn foster home two years ago has been shot in the head and critically wounded, the Advance has learned.

Patrick Alford Sr., 29, was the victim in a shooting yesterday afternoon inside a Brooklyn apartment, police sources tell the Advance.

Alford is the father of Patrick Alford Jr., who at age 7 disappeared from an East New York foster home on Jan. 22, 2010. Despite an exhaustive search by police, he has still not been found.

According to police, the shooting happened at about 4:18 p.m. at 1138 Blake Ave., in East New York's 75th Precinct.

Police discovered marijuana inside the apartment, according to police sources, and they're investigating whether or not his shooting was drug-related.

But Alford's attorney, James Lambert, said the man's family is telling him a different reason -- Alford was putting up missing posters for his son around a housing development where he was not welcome to do so, and the transgression got him shot.

"This is a dispute that started a couple of weeks ago," Lambert said.

Alford Sr. was taken to Brookdale University Hospital where, a hospital spokeswoman said today, he remains in critical condition.

Police to comb south Brooklyn, Staten Island in search of Patrick Alford, a troubled young boy who vanished 5 years ago

age progression

Lt. Christopher Zimmerman, commanding officer of the Missing Persons Squad, said they aim to “stimulate people’s memories” with the fliers.

“Obviously, we’d love to find him, that would be perfect,” he told The News.

Police will focus on the Livingston section of Staten Island neighborhood, where Patrick lived with his mom until she was forced to give him up — and in Starrett City, where he was living with a foster mom on Jan. 22, 2010 when he vanished without a trace.

Zimmerman is hoping somebody who has stayed silent all these years will finally come forward. He is banking on the hope that “maybe a little guilt is settling in.”

Patrick’s foster mom, Librada Moran, has also been notified that a fresh search will be underway, the lieutenant said.

The case was highlighted three times on "America's Most Wanted" and three Patrick look-alikes were tracked down.

But still there was no sign of the boy.

That October, Rodriguez sued claiming Patrick had threatened to kill himself and should have been under close supervision. She claimed the ACS placed Patrick with Moran even though the foster mom spoke little English and the boy spoke no Spanish.

On the first anniversary of Patrick’s disappearance, Rodriguez was wracked by remorse.

“This year has been a nightmare,” she told The News at the time. “If I had one wish, it would be to be 15 again and have my son in my belly again.”

There is a $12,000 reward for info that could lead to finding Patrick. Anybody with a tip should call Crimestoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
