Pet dog saves life of toddler in freezing weather

by Lianne on February 22, 2010
We’re so used to stories in the media of how dogs have attacked children that it makes a refreshing change to see a story of how a dog saved the life of a toddler actually getting some media coverage. Three-year-old girl, Victoria Bensch, wandered away from her home in Arizona last week and spent 14 hours in the freezing cold, over night, in temperatures that reached 30 below zero, before she was rescued.

Experts believe the girl would have died from hyporthermia had it not been for the family dog, a Queensland Heeler named Blue.
Local news station, KPHO, reported that Victoria was eventually found the following morning over one kilometre from her home, huddling up to the family Queensland Heeler for warmth.

A rescue helicopter eventually found Victoria, and the heroic dog, in the mountains surrounding the town.

Sgt Jeff Newnum, from Yavapai County sheriff’s office, stated:

She was able to stay warm with the dog.

It’s probably what saved her life — it was extremely cold out here.

Dwight D’Evelyn, another sheriff involved in the rescue, added:

The dog kept her alert, warm and gave her companionship throughout a very cold night.

The dog was so protective of Victoria that he was even uneasy about the rescuers who came to help them, although when he realised that they were there to help he moved away and allowed them to tend to the frightened toddler.
Matthew Uhl, the pilot of the rescue helicopter, explained:

She wasn’t moving when we first came upon her. She was kind of just looking face-down on the ground.
Uhl went on to add how the dog was protecting the toddler, but knew that they were there to help:

I think once the dog realized we were there to help them out, he was very excited.

He ran around while the medic tended to the little girl, and when it was time to go, he jumped right into the helicopter and was ready to go.

Blue may have even swayed one of the family’s sceptics when it comes to dogs, as Victoria’s aunt commented after she had been found safe and well:

We have to give a lot of credit to Blue.

He pretty much stayed with her all night.
I don’t even like animals and I hugged that dog so hard.

Good Morning trim, thanks for posting this...........a miracle for sure.

Nite, JSM. The Evil One is probably pizzed that he cant get the drugs on his own!!
It was fun "skating" with you, can't wait for the free dance, those are usually the best...which is why they save them for last and will wait to show them till about 10 pm!
It was fun skating with you and the monkeys last night Tevye. I hope they play the FD late tonight because I have a stupid meeting. I told my boss that the meeting needs to be shortened and/or I leave early. He said I could leave early!!!

Hi Cookie - I will be thinking of you and your little guy today - keep us posted.  Fun fun about the house situation - I told my hubby a few months ago time to build a new house - smaller and one level - I am sick of stairs.  Good luck with your new venture and if all you need to do is make sure you have a room for the computer then I think it will be a snap.

Yes, we are downsizing from a house that is about 5400 sq ft down to about 3200 sq ft...that will be quite a change...but for hubs and I, it will be fine....the biggest thing will be hubs going from a huge garage (6 car!) down to a 2 car garage! he is always in his man cave garage....he says that he is ready though so that sounds good to me!
We are going to sell a bunch of stuff out of this house...no room for it! lol!

We are going to sell a bunch of stuff out of this house...no room for it! lol!
Downsizing is simplifying and simplifying is less stressful and leaves more time for fun - that is the way I see it and it is amazing at how much stuff we accumulate over time that we don't even need - more is not better I firmly believe that.  Hubby will just have a cozier man cave, my hubs lives in the pole shed which is his man cave I know he would be just fine in a smaller garage because he tends to complain that he has to clean and organize all the time - he doesnt need all that space really.
