Tierra del Sol: ‘Five-star hotel at Arashi in 2013’

The terrain behind Arashi, where the five-star hotel of Tierra del Sol will be constructed.
ORANJESTAD — Within another two years, Aruba will have a second five-star hotel with 250 rooms, says Tierra del Sol, who is currently negotiating with the government. The luxurious hotel will be constructed on the terrain of the golf course alongside Arashi.

From the answers of Minister of Infrastructure, Environment and Integration, Benny Sevinger (AVP) on States-questions from AVP State-member Juan David Yrausquin earlier this week, it appeared that the long lease agreement for this terrain had expired.

However, director of Tierra del Sol, Bas van den Nieuwenhuijzen states that they are still negotiating with the government on the terrain for the construction of the hotel. He is namely of the opinion that the golf resort is entitled to the parcel.

In May 2007, this newspaper had already reported on the plans from Tierra del Sol to build a five-start hotel behind the Arashi beach.

The country Aruba still owns the terrain measuring 100,000 square meters. Due to a clause in the long lease agreement concluded in 1994, the country is naturally obligated to transfer the terrain to Tierra del Sol. Van den Nieuwenhuijzen: “The parcel at Arashi had already belonged to the master plan of Tierra del Sol right from the beginning. However, there had been a difference of opinion with the Luidens heirs on that terrain, which is why it had not been granted to Tierra del Sol at the time. Nevertheless, it had been agreed upon at that time, that if the terrain became available, it would only be granted to us. The government has no choice in this matter.”

Expanding the beach
Van den Nieuwenhuijzen says he is aware of the current discussion on the construction of new hotels on the island, access to public beaches by the local population and the pressure on the environment. “I am very fond of this island and I also want to preserve this for the future of my children. Nevertheless, I still believe that the island’s economy will benefit from the construction of a five-star hotel.”

First of all, a difference is made regarding the size of the terrain, according to him. “The island will receive the same number of rooms spread over a larger terrain, which will reduce the impact.” The guests will also use the Arashi-beach, but Van den Nieuwenhuijzen emphasizes that it will remain accessible for the public whatever the cost. “We actually want to expand the beach up to about 800 meters lengthwise so that everyone can continue to use it, and camp there every year, just like they do now.” The director of Tierra del Sol indicates that the government is cooperating, but is also critically viewing the project critically. “They strongly urge to keep the beach open for the public and to consider the impact on flora and fauna. If we do not comply with this, then it’s over and done with as far as they are concerned.”

Forging bonds of sisterhood

Stephanie Murray used to be one of the mean girls you see in movies about high school.

"I was mean and popular," said Stephanie, a senior at Dominion High School in Sterling. "I had major attitude problems. I didn't listen to anybody. I didn't really care."

Last year, Stephanie discovered the after-school girls club IRIS, which stands for Instilling Responsible Ideals Through Sisterhood.

For Stephanie, the activities, the "bonding trips" and the principles behind IRIS have brought her closer to girls she didn't know in her early, clique-centered high school days.

"My teachers and my principal will tell you that I've improved so much since my freshman year of high school," Stephanie said. "I'm more caring. I think of all the girls in IRIS as my sisters. I care for them as my sisters. I protect them as my sisters. If they ever need me, I will be here, because they are my sisters."

IRIS teaches real-life lessons that the young women weren't receiving in the classroom, said Jennifer Rutkowski, the Loudoun County parks and recreation teen specialist, who created the organization. IRIS, which started as a pilot program at Dominion, spread to Potomac Falls and Broad Run high schools this year.

IRIS tackles subjects as varied as Internet safety and cooking, and it offers field trips and bonding activities such as mother-daughter brunches and self-esteem-building workshops.

Now, the students are taking on their largest project yet: Girls Night Out. The event, scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Dominion, is open to female high school students throughout the county.

"We're taking the IRIS program and blowing it up times 10 so others can experience it," Rutkowski said.

The program will feature breakout sessions on self-defense, nutrition, health, beauty and fashion. Advance tickets are $5; at the door, $7.

The keynote speaker will be Beth Holloway, who will talk about the disappearance of her daughter Natalee Holloway in Aruba five years ago. Natalee, who had just graduated from high school, was visiting Aruba on her senior trip when she disappeared. The case remains unsolved.

After Holloway's speech, actor and feminist Ben Atherton-Zeman will perform a one-man play. Atherton-Zeman is a spokesman for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism. He uses humor and celebrity impressions to educate audiences about sexual violence, dating violence and rape. "Most people have a stereotype that a rapist is a stranger hiding in the bush with a knife," said Atherton-Zeman, speaking from his home near Boston. "But it's mostly someone you trust."

He said that rapists typically use the power of persuasion and alcohol and that victims tend to blame themselves.

"The play dispels some of the common myths that people associate with sexual violence," he said.

Atherton-Zeman said he would also cover topics such as sexism, jealousy and overly controlling boyfriends.

Other speakers will include Ed Ryan, a coordinator from Loudoun's Gang Response Intervention Team, Deputy James Spurlock from the Sheriff's Office and George Price from Kingdom Security.

Eva Chen, Teen Vogue's beauty and health director, will talk about self-esteem, nutrition and empowerment "as well as mascara and lip gloss," according to the program.

Rutkowski said local vendors will be on hand with exhibits, raffles and prizes such as discounted haircuts, nail sessions and flowers.

About 300 students are expected to attend, along with some mothers.

Klaas ... I still have not figured out what  connections Cheremy Croes had on Aruba that would imply the "powers that be" would shield him from the consequences of his actions if he were at fault for the accident.  He is no Joran van der Sloot.  He is no Paulus van der Sloot.  He is not a son of the elite.

I don't know what the deal is with him.  I know he has hung out with Steve Croes and Geoff von Cromvoirt (sp) for years.  Steve Croes, GVC. Cheremy, Michael Dompig, Kawish have been seen in photos together for years.  More recently Kawish and Michael with Satish and Deepak. 

Maybe Cheremy Croes' connection to those who were detained and questioned in the Natalee Holloway case implies he has knowledge and ... therefore must be appeased.

I mean, there certainly is a reason why Steven Croes came forward early on and stated, lied to the authorities that he had seen the two security guards taking Natalee. GRETA VAN SUSTEREN: John, what I heard a little bit earlier today from someone I spoke to in Aruba is that the lawyer for "G.V.C." is also the lawyer — it's a woman — who represented Steve Croes, who is the man who came forward with the false alibi to the police which supported lie number one of Deepak, Satish and Joran. Do you know anything about the lawyer representing both Steve Croes and now "G.V.C."?

JOHN KELLY: I know that's the situation. It's a woman, and that is the person who represented Croes and would be representing this individual now. And actually, Ms. Janssen, when I talked to her today, she was just getting ready to turn over the dossier to "G.V.C.'s" attorney for review before they did go into court.

VAN SUSTEREN: Now, Steve Croes, John — it was sort of a curious thing. He came forward seemingly out of the blue and said that he witnessed Deepak, Satish and Joran dropping Natalee off at the Holiday Inn and stumbling, and then two security guards coming up. That was a complete lie that he sort of volunteered, went to the police. He was taken into custody. He was then released. Is he free and clear of all of this, or is he still somewhat in the mix? ...

Then it's bizarre that this lawyer would represent both Steve Croes and GVC because at least here in the United States, I think most lawyers would say that there is a potential for conflict of interest and a lawyer shouldn't be representing both.

Page 118-119:  There are several people in the equation to consider besides the three boys and the father.  There are also seemingly well-connected people who have been passing on leads and dropping hints.  Sometime in early July 2005, Robin and I saw Deputy Police Commissioner Gerold Dompig's son and another young man who appeared to have similar descriptive features of Steve Croes, the Tattoo party boat disc jockey who had been arrested and released, trying to pick up a girl in the Holiday Inn lobby hallway and get her to go to Carlos 'n Charlies's.  The girl was offering resistance and trying to distance herself from those two.  As the guys were walking by, young Dompig noticed me and immediaely discontinued his activity.  The other kid realized he was getting nowhere with the girl and started in on another set of young women.

I walked up to (Michael) Dompig, and he seemed a little embarrassed that we had witnessed his actions. He then started talking about the case, and during this conversation he mentioned that he had heard that Paulus van der Sloot had borrowed a friend's boat on either the night of Natalee's disappearance or the next day and that he was allegedly involved with Natalee's murder.

Tuesday, the American press focused on Commissioner Dompig’s reaction, who issued a release to try to soften up the statements made by his son.

The former leader of the investigative team issued a release to say that his son unjustly accused Geoffrey. According to Gerold Dompig, the accusations of his son Michael against Geoffrey van Cromvoirt, were part of a dispute amongst acquaintances that escalated out of control.

‘He is a kid and he got confused and became frustrated and he said things that he shouldn’t have said’, Dompig stated to the Birmingham News . 'Things went too far’.

Dompig said that his son, who got angry due to accusations in the press, responded with certain conversations that he ‘heard of van Cromvoirt’.

One started to talk about the other, and the other talked back and it turned worse than a soap opera, according to what Dompig said. Dompig indicated to the newspaper that he apologized to the van Cromvoirt family, and asked to be transferred at the beginning of this case, because the case has seriously affected his family.

Aruban Police Commissioner Gerold Dompig told The Associated Press that police investigating the disappearance of Natalee Holloway have twice questioned his 19-year-old son, Michael -- once since the April 15 arrest of Geoffrey van Cromvoirt, who is also 19.

"Michael was merely one of the many people who were questioned as witnesses in this investigation and was never considered a suspect," Dompig said in a telephone interview.

He did not say whether his son was questioned about van Cromvoirt, who was arrested on suspicion of "criminal offenses that may be related to the disappearance" of Holloway, according to authorities, who have not provided further details.

Local newspapers have reported that Gerold Dompig's son worked for the same private security company as van Cromvoirt but the police commissioner did not confirm that.

Michael Dompig was questioned for the second time during a resurgence of activity after van Cromvoirt's arrest that included new searches of the sea floor off Aruba. The police commissioner did not say when the first interview of his son took place.
