Little Girl "Frail" After Being Starved
February 20, 2010
A mother and father sit were arrested Friday night because they are accused of starving their four-year-old daughter. Police say the little girl was so malnourished she was the size of a one-year-old.

News 4 WOAI is working Saturday morning to get the arrest affadavit so we can bring you more details about the little girl's parents.

We were there around 7:30 p.m. as police took the couple to jail. Officers were tipped off by someone in a doctor's office who noticed the girl was frail and had sores on her hips. I'm so glad to see someone took steps to save this innocent  little girl.  It seems so many times I've read cases where children were being abused and no one reported it.

Investigators say the couple admitted to only feeding the little girl Cheerios and sometimes mac and cheese. They're charged with injury to a child.

Parents of malnourished child arrested

February 20, 2010

By Valentino Lucio - Express-News

The parents of a 4-year-old girl were arrested Friday evening, a day after the child was found at a South Side doctor’s office suffering from malnutrition, officials said.

Police were notified about the child’s condition after a witness reported Thursday that the girl looked so thin her bones could be seen, San Antonio Police Department spokeswoman Sandy Gutierrez said. The girl was found with sores on her lips and was wearing diapers that would fit a 1-year-old baby, Gutierrez said.

Police would not disclose any information about the child except that she is recovering at a hospital.

The girl’s parents admitted to police that they “did not feed her like they should have” and that the child’s diet consisted of “Cheerios and sometimes mac and cheese,” Gutierrez said.

The unidentified mother and father, both 27, were apprehended without incident. Gutierrez said they could face charges of injury to a child and that Child Protective Services is investigating the incident.

Police say couple admits feeding girl just barely
February 20, 2010

A couple remained in custody Saturday night after police say they admitted refusing to adequately feed the woman's 4-year-old daughter, giving her only cereal once a day.

Robin Palafos, 24, and Luis Valenzuela, 27, were booked into Bexar County Jail on one count each of injury to a child — serious bodily injury, officials said. Bonds were set at $150,000.

Authorities became aware of the situation Friday as the girl was being treated for “severe starvation” at Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The couple had taken the girl to a clinic Thursday, when she was found with sores on her hips and wearing a diaper that would fit a 1-year-old, police said.

Child Protective Services reported the girl “was more than 3 feet tall and only weighed 23 pounds,” the affidavit says.

Palafos told police Valenzuela ordered her to feed her daughter only cereal and only once a day. She obeyed because she didn't want to start an argument and was afraid her fiance would leave, the affidavit says.

Palafos recognized her daughter was “extremely thin” and told police “it was like touching skin and bones” when she held her.

Valenzuela denied the accusation and told police he did not feed the girl because it was not his place to interfere with how Palafos raised her child. He told police he was “not a responsible person and should not have children,” the affidavit says.

The couple was unemployed and had been living with the woman's two daughters — she also has an 8-year-old — at her South Side home for two years, the affidavit says.

Although there was enough to eat in the house and the rest of the family consumed a variety of food, the couple continued to starve the 4-year-old, according to the affidavit.

The 8-year-old is healthy, police said. Both children will be put in the custody of CPS, officials said.

Relatives say couple accused of starving girl should be in jailSAN ANTONIO -- A 4-year-old San Antonio girl is still in the hospital after police say she was nearly starved to death.

The girl weighed only 23 pounds when Child Protective Services workers removed her and her 8-year-old sister from their home.

Investigators say the girl's mother, Robin Palafos and her boyfriend, Luis Valenzuela, didn't feed the girl. Valenzuela apparently told police he didn't feed her because she wasn't his child. Palafos claims she was afraid of Valenzuela, so she didn't feed the girl.

News 4 WOAI spoke with Valenzuela's sisters, who say the pair deserves to be in jail.

"When I came and seen this, it hurt me," said one of Valenzuela's sisters. "And then when I seen the baby walk out, and I asked my brother what was wrong. Robin quickly 'She's fine. I took her to the doctor. She's fine. The doctor...They're always at the doctor."

Both girls remain in the custody of Child Protective Services.
