I only hope that the $70K Mr Macaluso provided were taken from his own funds and not those of some unsuspecting client...   OH that's right, that was a staff mistake, wasn't it?
Is there ANYONE with any shred of scruples in this whole case?    It is really depressing me, the caliber of people involved in this whole affair.

What sort of impression did prominent Orlando attorney Cheney Mason make in joining Casey Anthony’s defense team today? The reviews were mixed.

“Cheney Mason, at times, sounded like a cowboy riding in to save the damsel in distress, Casey Anthony,” WESH-Channel 2’s Bob Kealing said. “But his attempts at times to take control of the situation in the courtroom almost seemed to backfire.”

The reviews were more favorable on WFTV-Channel 9. Kathi Belich noted that Mason has been successful in defending 50 first-degree murder cases. ”You could just see the dynamic of the defense team change when he was in court today,” Belich said. “Casey Anthony had one of the most relaxed expressions on her face that many have seen in a long time on the first day in court with new defense attorney Cheney Mason.”

WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said Mason “has a great deal of talent, a great deal of credibility.”

Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee. At today’s hearing, Anthony’s defense team argued for Judge Stan Stricklandto declare her an indigent. That ruling could come as early as tomorrow, Kealing said.

WOFL-Channel 35 turned to an older interview with Mason in which he said Anthony would have no trouble receiving state help in paying her legal bills. “She’s unemployed, obviously, she’s in jail,” Mason said in that interview.  ”I can see the taxpayers picking up $1 million without a lot of trouble.”

Talking to reporters today, Mason said, “This case is going to be fun to try, and we will walk out of here with Casey in arm.”

Belich asked Mason if his arrival was a game-changer for the defense. “I guess when a jury says not guilty, we’ll find out,” Mason replied. But defense attorney Andrea Lyon shook her head in the affirmative and mouthed the word,
Yes.”

Yet today, Kealing said Mason “was long on confidence today, but short on success.”

Strickland said that the defense team had to disclose the money it had received. Defense attorney Jose Baez said ABC News had paid $200,000, an unnamed donor gave $5,000 and former defense attorney Todd Macaluso donated $70,000.

But Kealing noted that money was far more than the $111,000 that Anthony revealed when applying for indigency. The other money went to expenses, Baez told Strickland.

Later, Baez told reporters, ”Everything that the defense has done has in this case has always been 100 percent honest.”

WESH’s Amanda Ober focused on letters that Anthony sent to a fellow inmate. Ober cited a source who described the letters as containing “some bombshell information” that could be a setback for the defense. Anthony wrote 50 letters to a fellow inmate, who alerted the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. A second inmate, now in federal prison, also communicated with Anthony when at the Orange County Jail.

The state says the letters do not contain a confession. Ober said Baez has 15 days to examine the letters and is likely to fight their release.

WOFL also asked George and Cindy Anthonytheir reaction to a National Enquirer story. In it, an alleged mistress says that George told her that Caylee’s death was “an accident that snowballed out of control.”

“No comment. It’s not worth commenting on,” Cindy Anthony said.

Public Defenders Often Used In High-Profile Cases
$200 Million Budgeted For Public Defenders

While many citizens said they're against using public money to pay for Casey Anthony's defense, some of Florida's most notorious criminals were represented by public defenders.

"The judge will not let them spend freely," defense attorney Jeff Dowdy said.

Dowdy said when a judge approves a court-appointed attorney, there are limits, but the person must be defended. Dowdy often gets called in to handle cases when the public defender is either too busy or has a conflict.

Dowdy defended Troy Victorino, who was one of a handful of defendants in a multiple slaying in Deltona. The victims were beaten to death over an Xbox.

"Can't say I don't have the money. It can't be done. The law provides for it. The Constitution provides for it. It's a due process issue -- you have to defend that person," Dowdy said.

Ted Bundy, child killer John Couey and vampire cult murder mastermind Rod Ferrell were all defended with state funds.

The annual budget for public defenders is $200 million. Another $30 million was spent on court-appointed lawyers to help out in 2009.

Dowdy also defended Roy McDuffie in a Volusia County retrial.

"He had a 12-0 death recommendation. Nothing was done in the penalty phase. It came back and was reversed by the Supreme Court. We redid the case, and he was sentenced to life in prison," Dowdy said.

Dowdy said when cases are tried twice, it's a bigger financial drain. Doing it right the first time, even if it's state money proves cheaper in the long run.

The state budget for prosecution is $350 million per year, but that includes going against court-appointed and private attorneys.

Humm out went the Caylee buttons..they used to wear them all the time in court..IMO this signify where their loyalties now lie it's SAVING CASEY not JUSTICE FOR CAYLEE!! UGGGH this angers me to the core!! No matter WHO committed this horrific crime they should want justice for caylee..rest in peace child.

They are disgusting and amoral.  They should be a little more concerned with saving their immortal souls, not saving Casey.
