May 2008 Why are there no free lunch? It's simple: because of the opportunity costs. And what are opportunity costs?  Fixed costs, variable costs, with or without transport costs and packaging - a bit of everything, but that it does not come to the economists in detail. The opportunity costs of an automobile consists in the fact that you could produce with the materials used optionally also different: for example, toys, typewriters and vacuum cleaners. Not everything in unlimited quantities. But just as an alternative to the car in question: The materials and labor to put in the finished car, could thus be used for all sorts of different.
