Hazmat Crews, FBI Called to IRS Building in Utah

Monday, March 1, 2010
Hazardous material crews were called to an IRS building in Ogden, Utah on Monday, less than two weeks after a man deliberately crashed his private plane into a Texas building that housed IRS workers, according to local reports.

The FBI was called to the scene and reporters were not allowed into the building after the incident, The Standard-Examiner reported. Showers were being used to deal with "a possible chemical situation," according to the local ABC affiliate.

The news station alluded to dispatcher calls that indicated a powder may have been found in the mail at the facility.

Fire crews were first notified at 11:15 a.m. local time, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Ogden is approximately 40 miles north of Salt Lake City

Hazmat incident forces evacuation of IRS building in Farr West
Monday, March 1, 2010

FARR WEST, Weber County — A portion of an office building that houses an Internal Revenue Service mail processing center was evacuated Monday due to a hazardous-materials incident.

The remainder of the building at 1973 N. Rulon White Blvd. was apparently isolated from the affected area.

IRS spokesman Bill Brunson said an unknown substance was found about 11:15 a.m. in the building where as many as 830 IRS employees receive and process business tax returns.

"A local hazmat team was dispatched and standard procedures for responding to such an incident were implemented," Brunson said.

At least two people were taken from the building on stretchers, according to KSL-TV.

"Some individuals did suffer medical emergencies which, at this time, do not appear to be related to this incident," said FBI spokeswoman Debbie Dujanovic.

She said she could not release any additional details about the incident.

Hazmat crews called to Utah IRS building
Monday, March 1, 2010
By MIKE STARK (AP) – 20 minutes ago
OGDEN, Utah — Hazardous materials crews were called Monday to an Internal Revenue Service building in Utah after a suspicious substance was found.

The FBI's Salt Lake City division says it responded to a possible hazardous material threat at the building in Ogden.

The FBI says parts of the building were evacuated. It says some people had medical emergencies but that they did not "appear to be related to this incident."

Video on the Web site of KSL-TV showed two people being taken out on stretchers.

Weber Fire District Deputy Chief Paul Sullivan told The Associated Press that the medical emergencies were coincidental to the discovery of the suspicious substance.

He said two people who already had medical issues happened to have episodes while authorities were on the scene and were treated. He said he couldn't release any additional information.

As of Monday afternoon, several emergency vehicles had left the scene. One hazardous materials response truck remained along with one fire engine.

The two- or three-story building is in an industrial area and is surrounded by a fence in Ogden, about 35 miles north of Salt Lake City. No signs on the building indicate it is an IRS facility.

The FBI says its investigation is ongoing and it couldn't release further details.

The IRS confirmed the incident in a statement Monday.

No details were available about the substance found or those taken from the building on stretchers.
