Energy exec reported missing in New Orleans
By JENNIFER RADCLIFFE
March 6, 2010

Melissa Phillip Chronicle file
His wife says Douglas Schantz failed to meet his daughter for a flight home.

The president of a Houston energy company disappeared in New Orleans early Friday, say police, who are trying to get surveillance video from the Bourbon Street area, where colleagues last saw him.

Douglas Schantz, 54, is president of Houston-based Sequent Energy Management, one of the largest wholesale gas marketers in the country.

Colleagues last saw Schantz wearing a blazer and tie between 1 and 2 a.m. Friday in a Bourbon Street bar, Assistant Police Superintendent Marlon Defillo said on Saturday.

Schantz's wife reported him missing after he failed to meet his daughter for a flight home later that morning. Schantz’s hotel key card had not been used since Thursday, and his bank and phone accounts were untouched, Defillo said.

“It’s completely out of line with how this individual conducts his day-to-day business,” Defillo said. “Typically when someone comes to New Orleans to have a good time, they’ll be gone for a couple of hours. When he has engagements and did not attend, that’s a concern.”

Company spokesman Alan Chapple confirmed that Schantz was in New Orleans on business. The company is working around-the-clock to assist in the search, he said.

“We are deeply concerned about Doug,” he said. “We’re working with law enforcement and doing everything we can to get Doug back home safely.”

Schantz is described as white, about 5 feet 11 inches tall and 200 pounds, with a medium build, blue eyes and short, straight, dirty-blonde hair.

Before being named president of Sequent Energy in May 2003, Schantz was a vice president at Houston-based Cinergy Marketing and Trading. He’s also worked at KM Marketing, L.P., a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan Inc., as well as Tenneco Energy Company and Transco Energy Company.

Schantz is a graduate of the University of Virginia and has a master’s degree in business administration from The University of Chicago, according to his company's Web site.

Exec last seen on Bourbon Street is missing
Saturday, March 6, 2010

Douglas Schantz (Source: Family)
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) - The president of a Houston energy company is missing and authorities suspect foul play.

Douglas Schantz, 54, is the president of Sequent Energy Management and he was last seen Friday morning on Bourbon Street.

New Orleans Police said Schantz  went out with colleagues after visiting Tulane Unversity. All of Schantz belongings are still in his hotel room, and there has been no activity on his cell phones or bank accounts.

"When you talk about, almost two days where he has been unaccounted for, then that is a great concern for us and his family," said Marlon Defillo of the New Orleans Police Department.

"But when he has had obligations, when he has had engagements that he should have appeared before and failed to do so, and a person of his stature, who is a responsible person with a lot of responsibility, and did not respond that's a concern."

Schantz was last seen wearing a blue blazer with a white shirt.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information in this case.

That number is 344-STOP.

Colleagues of a Houston energy company president who was last seen wearing a jacket and tie early Friday morning on Bourbon Street are on their way to New Orleans to try to bolster law enforcement efforts to find him.

Douglas Schantz, 54, was reported missing by his wife after he failed to meet his daughter for a Friday morning flight. Lori Schantz said it's uncharacteristic of her husband to disappear. Douglas Schantz, who is president of Sequent Energy Management, is described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing about 200 pounds with a medium build, blue eyes and short, straight, dirt -blond hair. He was last seen wearing a navy blazer, a white shirt and a tie.

Schantz was out with colleagues who last recall seeing him Friday between 1 and 2 a.m. at a bar in the 500 block of Bourbon Street, NOPD Assistant Superintendent Marlon Defillo said during a Saturday news conference. Defillo said Schantz's hotel key card has show no activity since Thursday at 3:30 p.m., and that his bank and phone accounts have been inactive.

"It's completely out of line with how this individual conducts his day-to-day business," Defillo said. "Typically when someone comes to New Orleans to have a good time, they'll be gone for a couple of hours. When he has engagements and did not attend, that's a concern."
Police on Saturday afternoon were trying to get their hands on surveillance video from the area where Schantz last was seen. It was not clear whether the recordings sought are from private cameras or city-owned crime cameras.

Meanwhile, a number of Schantz's colleagues were due to arrive in New Orleans on Saturday about 4 p.m., with plans to fan out across the French Quarter to distribute fliers seeking information about his whereabouts, Defillo said.

Schantz has been president since 2003 of Sequent Energy Management, where he oversees natural gas asset management, supply and distribution, trading and producer services. He also is a member of the executive advisory board of the Entergy-Tulane Energy Institute based at Tulane University.

Sequent Energy Management on Saturday announced that it had doubled to $5,000 the reward from the local office of Crimestoppers. 07Missing4Michael DeMocker, The Times-PicayuneDetectives with New Orleans Police Homicide approach Razzoo's while canvassing the area Saturday for information on the disappearance of 54-year-old Douglas Schantz of Houston, who was last seen early Friday morning at the club in the 500 block of Bourbon Street.

New Orleans police Saturday were searching for a Houston energy company president who was last seen early Friday morning in the 500 block of Bourbon Street.

Douglas Schantz, 54, was reported missing to police by his wife after he didn't show up to meet his daughter for a Friday morning flight, authorities said Saturday.

Police reviewing surveillance video from the area have pegged Schantz as leaving Razzoo Bar and Patio about 2 a.m. Friday, New Orleans Police Assistant Superintendent Marlon Defillo said during a news conference Saturday night.

Colleagues recall seeing Schantz, president of Sequent Energy Management, between 1 and 2 a.m. at a bar in the 500 block of Bourbon Street, Defillo said. He was wearing a jacket and tie.

Several of those colleagues, who had since flown back to Houston, returned to New Orleans on Saturday with plans to fan out across the French Quarter to distribute fliers seeking information about Schantz's whereabouts.

"They had shots of him leaving the place he was at and then the next clip shows a taxi pull away, and he's not on the street after that," said Eric Smith, associate director of the Tulane Energy Institute, which included Schantz on its advisory board.

Schantz presented Tulane officials with a $25,000 gift during a reception Thursday night on behalf of Sequent, a Houston natural gas trading and asset management company.

"He's a real supporter of the school," Tulane spokesman Michael Strecker said, adding that Schantz has given $25,000 gifts each year for the past three or four years.

Defillo said Saturday that police were still trying to determine whether Schantz got into the cab.

Schantz was staying at the Royal Sonesta Hotel with five or six other executives, Smith said.

During Thursday's reception, Schantz made plain his feelings for New Orleans, his daughter, Brittani Schantz, said in a phone interview.

He talked about "how close to his heart New Orleans is, and how much he loves the city," Brittani, a Tulane senior, said, adding that he "loved New Orleans more than anything."

Brittani Schantz and her father were scheduled for separate flights, but he had planned to meet her before her flight to pick up some baggage before she headed to a job interview.

Her interview was for a position in the energy field. "He was very, very excited and proud of me for it," said Brittani, who boarded her plane, thinking her father had decided to take an earlier or later flight "and just forgot to tell me."

Brittani, a member of the first post-Katrina freshman class that arrived on Tulane's campus in August 2006, said "not only is it uncharacteristic, it's impossible" that her father would have disappeared voluntarily. Despite frequent visits to the city, he had never expressed a concern for his safety, she said.

Meanwhile, the incident didn't seem to deter other visitors in the French Quarter on Saturday.

Ray Huntzicker, who works at a restaurant in the 500 block of Bourbon Street, said he saw detectives early Saturday morning inquiring for footage from security cameras. He expressed concern that business in the neighborhood might suffer.

But others, such as Baton Rouge resident Roger Cutrer, said word of the missing man didn't make them feel nervous to be around the French Quarter.

"When you come here often, you know where to go and where not to go," Cutrer said.

Schantz, who is about 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, has blue eyes and short, dark blond hair. He was last seen wearing a navy blazer, a white collared shirt and a tie.

Sequent said Saturday that it had doubled to $5,000 the reward offered by the local Crimestoppers program. Anyone with information about Schantz's whereabouts is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or toll-free at 877.903.7867. Callers do not have to give their names or testify and can earn reward money for tips that lead to an indictment.

Tips also can be called in to 911, the Police Department at 504.821.2222 or Detective Gwen Guggenheim at 504.658.5300.

NOPD searching for missing Houston corporate executive
March 6, 2010
Reported by: Allison Braxton, Reporter

It's been nearly 48 hours since a Houston resident was last seen at a French Quarter bar. New Orleans Police are posting

100-thousand missing person's fliers throughout the French Quarter looking for corporate executive, Douglas Schantz.

Douglas Schantz, 54, arrived in New Orleans on Thursday to see his daughter, a Tulane University student.

He also planned to present Tulane with a donation from his company Sequent Energy Management.

Around 10:30 that night Schantz and his colleagues headed to Club Razzoo on Bourbon street.

New Orleans Deputy Chief, Marlon Defillo says at a press conference "And at 2:00 a.m., one of Mr. Schantz colleagues who

noticed he was originally standing at the bar by himself drinking was not there." Friends didn't suspect anything out of the

ordinary and headed back to their hotel rooms at the Royal Sonesta. Friday morning they boarded a plane heading back to

Houston for a meeting. Colleague, Mark Homestead says "We were supposed to have a staff meeting at Noon on Friday and

we were all sitting there waiting for him to show up."

Schantz's wife called New Orleans Police and reported him missing.

Michael Schantz the victim's son says "Last time he was seen was 2:00 a.m. leaving Razzoo's and on video surveillance he

took a right instead of a left, that's all we know." NOPD Homicide investigators spent Saturday afternoon talking with

business owners along Bourbon Street. Defillo says "We've checked his bank records their inactive, cell phones their inactive.

There were other engagements he was supposed to be at and we are suspecting foul play." Michael Schantz says, "It's my

duty as oldest son to find my Dad."

Sequent Engergy Management has added 25-hundred dollars to the Crimestoppers reward, bringing it to 5-thousand dollars

for anyone who can help find Douglas Schantz.

If you have any information call Crimestoppers at 822-1111.

Massive Search Under Way For Missing Tourist
Douglas Schantz Last Seen At Razoo Night Club In French Quarter
Sunday, March 7, 2010

NEW ORLEANS -- A massive search effort is still under way for the head of a Houston energy company.

Friends and family of Douglas Schantz fanned out across the French Quarter this weekend looking for him. A family member said Schantz had a special love for New Orleans.
Friends and family continue the search for the 54-year-old, who was last seen at the Razoo night club.

"My dad has not been found. He is still missing," said Schantz's son, Michael. "We've got one of the biggest search teams out in the history of New Orleans trying to find him … several family members, friends, and the investigation is still going on."

Family members said Schantz loved New Orleans, visited often and he was pretty familiar with city, which is why his disappearance is so alarming. They said new information is slow going.

"We are slowly getting a little information, finding some leads, not too much so far," Michael Schantz said. "We did have a little footage of him leaving the bar at around 2 a.m. That was the last time he was seen."

The club is in the 500 block of Bourbon Street, which isn't far from the Royal Sonesta Hotel, where Douglas Schantz was staying. Family said he was in town visiting his daughter -- a senior at Tulane University set to graduate in May. He also presented a donation to he university while in town.

Members of the Tulane community and scores of others have joined the effort to find him.

"Some people from Houston, some people from his office, attorneys here, the chief of police, investigators … This is a huge deal," Michael Schantz said. "Everyone loved my dad. He was (loved) a great deal, and we really want to find him."

New Orleans Police Department Asst. Supt. Marlon Defillo said Douglas Schantz's bank records and his cell phone have both been inactive since his disappearance.

"There were several other engagements he was to appear before and did not show," Defillo said. "At this point, we are suspecting foul play."

The worry continues to grow for friends and family of the man has been missing for more than 48 hours.

Douglas Schantz was last seen wearing a navy blue blazer, white collared shirt and a tie. Crimestoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for anyone with information leading to his return.

Mystery of exec's fate casts a pall at Sequent
New Orleans police, private detectives continue search

By PAIGE HEWITT
HOUSTON CHRONCLE
March 7, 2010
After an exhausting weekend of searching, Sequent Energy Management employees face the agonizing task of returning to work without their president, who vanished in New Orleans during a business trip Friday.

Police suspect foul play in the disappearance of 54-year-old Douglas Schantz, who was last seen Friday around 2 a.m. at a club on Bourbon Street.

“This has been very, very difficult. Very emotional,” said Mark Homestead, vice president of trading and marketing, who was with Schantz that night. He remains in New Orleans, in constant contact with police and private investigators hired by the company.

Peter Tuminello, executive vice president of business development and support, has been named acting president for Sequent, a 150-employee subsidiary of AGL Resources.

In a meeting planned for Monday morning, the company is expected to address the issue with employees and provide a counselor for anyone who wants it.

Schantz, who joined the company in 2003, is described by friends as modest about titles, popular among staff and warm in nature. He has a number of ties to New Orleans, including a daughter who attends Tulane University.

Over the weekend, the police fielded only a few leads — three calls received by a tip line were no good, Homestead said.

Schantz's credit cards, ATM card and cell phone have not been used, making them fear foul play.

New Orleans detectives and several private investigators hired by the company searched the French Quarter through the weekend.

The time-consuming part of the investigation, police said, is obtaining copies of surveillance footage from business owners and homeowners near Bourbon Street, where he was last seen.

Schantz checked into the Royal Sonesta Hotel about 3:20 p.m. Thursday, hotel spokeswoman Roberta Grove said. The hotel, has been completely searched, she said. Hotel officials believe Schantz checked in, placed his personal belongings in the room and left. They don't believe he ever returned.

Schantz, colleagues and Tulane University officials attended a ceremony Thursday evening during which Sequent donated funds to a graduate program. Afterward, the group went out for dinner, finishing about 11 p.m., Homestead said.

They stopped by Bourbon Street.

Schantz casually separated from the group without mention, which was not unusual. His co-workers figured he was headed back to the hotel.

But the father of three — ages 19, 21 and 25 — never showed. He missed his flight and the staff meeting in Houston on Friday afternoon.

Crime Stoppers in New Orleans has been offering an award of $5,000, but company officials have vowed to at least match that. Schantz's sister maintains hope that he will be found.

“We are all just hoping and praying that he'll contact us and the whole thing will just be a nightmare we had to live through,” Susanne Schantz wrote from her home in London.

Schantz is described as white, about 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, with a medium build, blue eyes and short, straight, dirty-blond hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911, the New Orleans Police Department at 504-821-2222, Detective Gwen Guggenheim at 504-658-5300, or Crime Stoppers at 504-822-1111.

Staff writers Anita Hassan and Jennifer Radcliffe contributed to this report.

Video shows missing Texas exec leaving NO bar
Sunday, March 7, 2010

Associated Press Reporting
Surveillance cameras show a missing Texas energy executive leaving a New Orleans night club early Friday, but no other clues have been made public in his disappearances.

New Orleans Police Assistant Superintendent Marlon Defillo said video from a nearby camera on Bourbon Street shows 54-year-old Douglas Schantz leaving the Razzoo Bar and Patio about 2 a.m. Friday.

Eric Smith, associate director of the Tulane Energy Institute, which included Schantz on its advisory board, said the video also shows a taxi pull away and Shantz can't be seen after that.

Still, it's not clear if Schantz got into the taxi.

Shantz, president of Sequent Energy Management, was in New Orleans to give Tulane a $25,000 gift during a reception Thursday.

Police look for missing Texas exec in New Orleans
Monday, March 8, 2010

NEW ORLEANS — Police scoured the French Quarter on Monday and checked with businesses for surveillance videotapes of a Texas energy executive who disappeared after walking out of a Bourbon Street bar.

About 30 detectives were looking for Douglas Schantz, 54, who was last seen leaving the Razzoo Bar and Patio about 2 a.m. Friday.

"It's unusual," said Assistant Police Superintendent Marlon Defillo. "There has been no activity on his credit cards, his cell phone."

Police have set up command in a French Quarter hotel and they're getting help from the FBI and federal marshals, he said. The Coast Guard has searched the Mississippi River.

Crimestoppers increased its reward for information on Schantz's whereabouts from $5,000 to $25,000 for a limited time, the agency said.

Schantz, president of Houston-based Sequent Energy Management, was in New Orleans to give Tulane University a $25,000 gift during a reception Thursday. After the dinner, he and colleagues went to Bourbon Street at about midnight, said Mark Homestead, a senior vice president who was with Schantz.

Schantz had not had too much to drink and he left the bar before the rest of the group, Homestead said.

"We didn't think anything of it," he said.

No one realized Schantz was missing until he didn't turn up for a meeting the next day.

Videos show he left the Bourbon Street bar and headed toward the river.

Texas Equusearch was headed to New Orleans late Monday to do a sonar search of the river.

"We'll also have people checking the shoreline in case he did go into the river and washes up somewhere," said Tim Miller, president and founder of Equusearch.

At a news conference Monday in Houston, Peter Tumminello, executive vice president at Sequent said Schantz is the kind of person who normally responds immediately to phone calls, e-mails and text messages.

"His disappearance is 180 degrees uncharacteristic," said Tumminello, who is serving as the company's acting president in Schantz's absence.

Tumminello said Schantz often visited New Orleans for work and considered it "his adopted city." He also said Schantz's daughter attends Tulane.

Schantz's son, Michael, said the disappearance has devastated his family.

"He's such a good dad," Michael said. "His wife, my mom, dearly misses him. We just really want him back alive."

HOUSTON - Police say a body has been found near where a Houston business executive went missing in New Orleans.

The body, not yet identified, was wearing a suit when it was located by searchers with the New Orleans Police Department. Texas Equsearch, a search team from the Houston area, was also helping with the search when the body was located.

Search teams were working to locate a top executive of a Houston energy company who was last seen early Friday morning. He was caught on security cameras leaving a bar on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

The missing, identified as 54-year-old Douglas Schantz, is the president of Sequent Energy Management, L.P.

Body found during search for missing exec

NEW ORLEANS, LA (KTRK) -- A Texas-based nonprofit group that has been searching for a missing oil executive in New Orleans has found a body.

im Miller, president and founder of Texas Equusearch, said the unidentified body was found Tuesday in the Mississippi River, "very, very near" the spot where 54-year-old Douglas Schantz, president of Houston-based Sequent Energy Management, was last spotted on a security video Friday morning.

It was not known if the body was that of Schantz. Miller said Schantz's brother was to help with the identification.

Searching through videos from businesses in the French Quarter, police were able to place 54-year-old Douglas Schantz at the dock for the Riverboat Natchez at about 2:40 a.m. on Friday.

Police Superintendent Warren Riley said Tuesday that Schantz, who left the Razzoo Bar and Patio about 2 a.m. Friday, was seen walking on a 2-foot walkway by the river.

"We're not certain, but it appears Mr. Schantz may have fallen into the river," Police Superintendent Warren Riley said.

Riley says the man, who had been drinking, seemed disoriented on the videos. He is seen going into a restricted area and is not seen again on the video, despite a review of the following four hours of tape, Riley said.

It does not seem that Schantz was the victim of foul play, which had earlier been suspected, Riley said.

"At no point in that 36 minutes was he ever approached or accompanied by any individual," Riley said.

Police mounted a massive effort to find Schantz, with 30 detectives scouring the French Quarter for videos showing his path after leaving his co-workers. The FBI, U.S. Marshal Service and Customs were also involved in the search.

On Monday a Coast Guard helicopter searched for 20 miles down-river but found no sign of Schantz.

Texas Equusearch arrived in New Orleans late Monday to do a sonar search of the river. They began looking next to the Natchez Tuesday morning, but bad weather forced them to call off the search briefly. The main problem was the riverboat itself, Tim Miller, president and founder of Equusearch said.

"We started where we think he went in and thought we'd have him in 30 minutes," Miller said. "But this paddlewheel causes a lot of underwater turbulence and the boat has been in and out seven times since Friday morning."

The current along the French Quarter shore was running at almost 4 miles an hour, Miller said. But there was heavy debris under the water there, he said. And with the water temperature at just 34 degrees, the body would not pop to the surface quickly, he said.

New Clue In Search For Oil Executive
Tues. March 8, 2010

Four days and counting --- there's still no sign of Houston oil executive Douglas Schantz. No one's seen him alive since Thursday's late night party at Razoo's spilled into Friday morning.

Schantz's credit cards and cell phones show no activity. Police are becoming increasingly worried about the worst case scenario. Chief Warren Riley has called a press conference for Tuesday morning to discuss the latest developments in the case.

“If an individual is gone for this length of time, that clearly is a concern. So foul play is even greater now - that theory of foul play,” says Assistant Superintendent Marlon Defillo, NOPD.

New surveillance footage from the Dungeon bar is pointing detectives in a specific direction. The video shows Schantz leaving Razzoo's and turning on Toulouse toward Decatur Street and the Mississippi River.
He's by himself. The cameras follow Schantz down past Royal Street.

Both volunteers and detectives are now focusing their efforts here along Schantz route from Bourbon to Decatur. Detectives are hoping local businesses may have more surveillance footage, and volunteers are putting up new fliers, hoping to churn up fresh clues.

A beefed up force of 30 detectives is now working round the clock out of a command post in the French Quarter. The FBI and US Marshals office are also involved. The Coast Guard has searched 20 miles of the river and Texas EquuSearch is preparing to search the floor of the Mississippi with sonar.

Meanwhile, friends and family are praying for a miracle.

"His family is obviously very distraught. The employees – we’ve got counselors to help manage the stress. If you know anything about this case, we implore you to let the NOPD know,” says co-worker Mark Homestead.

Schantz's company, Sequent Energy, is upping the reward for information about his disappearance to $25,000, but they're looking for fast results. The reward expires in 2 weeks.
