That is what I was thinking.

My question earlier stems from not knowing exactly how chemically diet coke and chocolate might differ when their chemical components are broken down. Chocolate = cocoa powder,  diet coke=cocoa powder(about this I am not sure)

Diet coke will clean your drains too.

The perps wouldn't have needed a drug supplier.

They just needed to stop at the cosmetics counter at the drugstore.

Any strong base, such as bleach, would probably do the same thing.

Lye would be hard for the guys to get on their own. Bleach wouldn't.

According to the recipe they could use NaOH.........sodium hydroxide(where do you get that?)

OT,
I bought a packet of lemon kookaid and used it to clean my diswasher.  Excellent results.  Thanks BB.  Whole kitchen smelled lemon fresh, too.

Could they have just sprayed something from an aerosol can like paint or paint stripper.  Lots of feral kids here get up to these tricks to get a "high"

Glad to hear it. It makes you wonder what it did to your insides when you drank it as a kid?

They would have no problems getting the ingredients for GHB.  Just like SB said, all they needed to do is go to the corner drug store.

It is readily available to water treatment facilities.  At least that is what my DH tells me and he works at one.  Well, lye is in Drano isn't it?

GHB is not a cleaning solvent, but GBL is.

Exactly!  But the GBL is chemically altered by its reaction with the base of NaOH.

Solvent means that it dissolves another substance.  It's actually a chemical reaction.

Don't remember verbatim, but is that the drink that Natalee was given at 3:15 that we should ask about?

My chemistry days are long ago... so I am not sure now, reading the articles that were posted in here, that sodium hydroxide isn't necessary.

So, just mix nail polish remover and Drano and par-tay.

That's all it would take.

Of course, if you botch the recipe, your valentine for the night dies of caustic poisoning.

Red Devil Lye is for sale in many grocery stores.  Unfortunately my neighbors the Meth Kids seem to have no trouble getting it.  Try Ingles in Trenton, Georgia.  I got all I wanted there once to make soap from goats milk with one of my son's girlfriends.

Yes, I deserve a medal for that, too, as she went to sleep and left me stirring the stuff for hours.  Made with goats Mikel also purchased at Ingles at that location.

The things I have done in the interest of romance and not even my own!  Perhaps Cupid will be especially kind to me this year.

Nail polish remover, Drano, and a few other ingredients and voile' you have a backyard variety of the deadly kind.   Do you guys know what they call the drain cleaner that the local druggies use to make crack?   Red Fire.  It's mostly a lye product.

Ingesting that poison-wine-of-Bacchus would most certainly cause plenty of vomiting.

I get a stomach ache just THINKING about swallowing something like that.

How is it that we are better at chemistry than the Dutch Forensic Institute?

Yes, that is the chemical term for lye.  Red Devil drain opener is pure lye.  Used it in the soap.  Grocery store had tons of it.  Guess they sell a lot to the locals making meth all the time.

All kinds of home brew things to make.  Get the recipe off just a bit and something bad happens, too.   Confused

BTW,  neighbors make meth in the truck of a car and where backseat should be.  Run a bunch of electrical cords out to the front porch, back the car up to them and open the trunk.  A dozen or so crock post all lined up inside the back of the car.

They have on the police scanner and if they hear there is somebody on the way, they just close the trunk and drive the car away.

Crock pots are best because they are ceramic lined.  Have to be careful that the container does not react with the ingredients as metal would with meth.
