Missing Student's Belongings Found By River
Thursday, March 25, 2010
Police searching for a British university exchange student missing in America for over three weeks have discovered some of his personal items near a river.
It comes just hours after Jonathan Dorey's parents released a video statement appealing for their son's safe return.

The 22-year-old, from Guernsey, has not been seen since leaving Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) campus in Richmond city on March 2.

Detectives found Mr Dorey's belongings near a popular fishing spot on the north bank of the James River in Richmond after they were spotted by a passerby.

The items were reportedly in a hollow area under a large concrete pad beside the river near Rocketts Landing east of Shockoe Bottom.

Authorities scoured the river using search-and-rescue boats but said they found nothing in the water.

Police have not identified the items but the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that officers recovered a ruckpack and some clothing.

University police have said previously that Mr Dorey was carrying a navy-blue Eastpak ruckpack when he was last seen.

Surveillance pictures show him leaving his VCU campus residence hall that morning with a backpack and mountain bike.

Earlier, officials from VCU released a video of the student's parents, Alan and Debbie Dorey, who traveled to the US more than two weeks ago to help search for their son.
"We know that he's visited New York, New Orleans and Austin in Texas while he's been here," Alan Dorey said.

"We're desperate for any information on his whereabouts.

"Jonny, if you see this message, please, please send me a text on my mobile," Mr Dorey added.

"Just contact us so that we know you're safe."

Police and fire officials are meeting today to decide how to proceed with the search, said Richmond fire marshal David Creasy.

Mr Dorey has been described as an accomplished mountain biker and his disappearance has prompted numerous searches of bike trails on both sides of the James River.

A Facebook page "Help Find Jonny Dorey" has attracted more than 24,000 members.

UPDATE: Search continues for VCU student
March 25, 2010
William Carney points toward the area where he found a backpack that he believes was the one later identified to be that of the missing Virginia Commonwealth University student.
Officials broadened their search along the north bank of the James River for traces of missing Virginia Commonwealth University student Jonathan S. Dorey this morning. Officials with the Richmond and Henrico fire departments, and Richmond and VCU police resumed their search around 8 a.m., said VCU spokesman Michael Porter.

This morning, a State Police helicopter searched an area of the James River between Rocketts Landing and Osborne Landing, Porter said. Two dog teams also searched the shore area around Rocketts Landing, one on a boat that stopped along the river bank.

Officials did not dive in the river because the water currents are too fast, Porter said.

Yesterday a passerby alerted authorities after finding some of Dorey’s belongings under a large concrete pad on the north bank of the James, just south of the Lehigh Cement plant.

Dorey was last seen March 2 leaving his dorm room on his bike.

On the river today, William Carney, 52, showed a photographer the area where he saw a backpack that he believed was the one later identified to be that of Dorey. Carney explained he saw the backpack on Sunday but didn’t notify authorities because it’s not uncommon for people to leave belongings near the river.

Candles lit for Jonny
March 28, 2010

Family, friends and wellwishers last night were urged to light a candle in hope for the safe return of Guernseyman Jonny Dorey.

The plea was made on the Facebook site set up to help find the young Guernseyman, who went missing on March 2nd.

Jonny was last seen when he was caught on cctv leaving his halls of residence in Virginia. Police have been checking the area where Jonny's things were found last week and also searching the river.

Friends lit candles at Vazon last night, as well as around the world, to coincide with Earth hour.

More details released on missing student’s bike
Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Virginia Commonwealth University officials today released a more-detailed description of a missing student’s mountain bike.

Jonathan S. Dorey, an exchange student from a small island in the English Channel, disappeared one month ago today from his VCU dormitory. Surveillance footage shows him walking away from the dorm with his bicycle.

Last week police discovered Dorey’s backpack and its undisclosed contents on the north bank of the James River near Rocketts Landing in Richmond.

Authorities describe Dorey as an accomplished mountain biker. His bike is said to be black with a black and red seat.
Today, officials said it is a single-speed bicycle with an Azonic Steelhead frame, an SDG Bel-Air seat, Race Face lock-on grips, DMR V8 pedals and Kenda tires.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Dorey’s location.

Anyone with information is asked to call VCU police at (804) 828-1196.

A month on, search for Jonny continues
Wednesday, March 31, 2020

POSTERS asking for information about local student Jonny Dorey, who has been missing for a month in the USA, are to be distributed by Guernsey Post.

The 22-year-old went missing a month ago yesterday from his college campus in the USA. Since then a huge manhunt has been under way for the geography exchange student at Virginia Commonwealth University in state capital Richmond.

A Facebook group set up to help find him has more than 25,000 members.

Some of his belongings, believed to be a backpack and clothing, were found last Wednesday on the north bank of the James River. Since then police and rescue teams have focused their attention on that area.

A Guernsey Post spokesman said it was pleased to support the search. ‘We pride ourselves on our strong sense of community involvement and responsibility and recognise we are in a unique position with a delivery network across the island.

Family spokesman Bob Beebe said it was a difficult time for the family and everyone involved in the search.

‘It is every parent’s worst nightmare and a harrowing time for the family. They are finding it deeply distressing,’ he said.

‘Jonny’s parents want to thank all the friends and the media for their support and for respecting their privacy at this time.’

Mr Beebe said it was too early to speculate when Mr Dorey’s family might return to Guernsey.

‘They are still totally focused on the search,’ he said.

If he is in that river, he should surface. It may take a while, but it should happen.

I don't think Jonny's bike was ever recovered was it?  Did someone come along and steal it?

Body Found In River Near Hopewell
Police working to identify the remains.

May 4, 2010
HOPEWELL - A body is found floating in the James River late Tuesday evening near Hopewell the Hopewell Marina..

The remains were caught up in a boat slip and were noticed by a passerby at 7:53 p.m.

Police on the scene would not say how badly decomposed the body was, but the remains are being taken to the Richmond medical examiner's office for positive identification. It could take several days before a positive ID is made.

Police say this is a death investigation but are treating it as a homicide until they can prove otherwise.

We have learned that Hopewell investigators are in contact with VCU police. They are looking into the possibility that the body could be missing VCU student Jonny Dorey. Dorey was last seen on the VCU campus March 2. His belongings were found on the banks of the James River near Dock Street weeks later.

Thanks Nut. If it is him, at least his parents will have some answers. I don't think there is anything worse than not knowing where a loved one is.

This report says no.... out of UK ... I'll wait for a US news report

Body found in the US is not missing student

Police have confirmed a body found in Virginia in the US is not that of missing Guernsey student Jonny Dorey.
The 22-year-old was last seen on his Virginia Commonwealth University campus in Richmond on 2 March.

Sgt Michael Walls, the officer in charge of the investigation into the discovery of the body, confirmed it was that of a 77-year-old man.

A $10,000 (£6,497) reward has been offered for information about geography exchange student.

Mr Dorey had been studying at the University of the West of England in Bristol before travelling to the US.

The body was discovered in the Hopewell Marina, downstream of a sighting of someone answering Mr Dorey's description swimming in the James River.

Some of the student's clothes and belongings were later found on the banks of the river.

Mr Dorey is also an accomplished mountain biker and was last seen riding a black mountain bike.
