Former Security Guard arrested for assaulting an elderly couple
Sunday, March 14, 2010

Police say 37-year-old Alan Hughes used mace and a taser to assault and rob an elderly couple Friday night (Gerardo Garcia, News 4 WOAI)

SAN ANTONIO – A man is in jail tonight after police say he attacked and robbed an elderly couple with mace and a taser Friday night.

37-year-old Alan Hughes was arrested Saturday morning.

According to police the elderly couple knew Hughes and let him into their home. Police say the couple had loaned Hughes money in the past, but they don’t know why he tried to take the woman’s purse.

The couple who are 82 and 83 years old tried to stop Hughes, but police say he was able to overpower them.

“He sprayed them with mace. He tried to tase them with his taser, and then he struck the lady on the back with a chair that was in the house,” said Sgt. Jaime Trevino with the San Antonio Police Department Robbery Task Force.

Trevino says Hughes is a former state-licensed security guard. He now faces charges of Aggravated Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury.

The couple were treated and released from the hospital on Saturday.

I don't understand why the charge isn't more serious, and there aren't additional charges.  Maybe it's the way the article is written.  But in my mind,  spraying an elderly person with mace, trying to tase them    and hitting the lady on the back with a chair is life threatening.  And since there were two victims, Hughes should be charged for each and every thing he did to each victim.  He could have killed these folks.  And since both victims are over eighty years in age, that should be factored in.  Crimes against the elderly needs an additional tier for penalty, just like there should be and in some cases are added penalties for crimes against children.  I am reading more and more every day how the elderly are being abused and preyed upon.

A man was arrested Saturday afternoon after he allegedly assaulted and robbed an elderly couple Friday, officials said.

Alan Wayne Hughes, 37, remained in the Bexar County Jail on one count of aggravated assault. His bail was set at $50,000.

Viola Hood, 83, told police that Hughes had borrowed money from the couple in the past but when he went to visit them Friday, he became angry and began yelling, an arrest warrant affidavit states. Hood acted liked she was going to call police when Hughes pushed her down and sprayed her with pepper spray, the affidavit states. She told police she went unconscious for a short time.

The woman’s husband attempted to get his gun from a bedroom but Hughes hit him with a chair, sprayed him with pepper spray and attempted to shoot him with a Taser gun, the affidavit states.

After the attack, Hughes allegedly stole the woman’s wallet, which contained her credit card, police said. When she called the credit card company to report the card stolen, they told her someone attempted to withdraw $500 and purchase a plane ticket, the affidavit states.
