Police identify body of baby found in bag at Druid Hill Park

March 15, 2010

Baltimore police have identified the body of an infant found buried in a bag in Druid Hill Park as a 2-month-old boy.

Anthony Guglielmi, the police department's chief spokesman, said detectives were directed to the body's location by one of the boy's parents and are now attempting to find the other parent. The infant was removed from a shallow hole and taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy, he said.

Officers were sent shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday to investigate a suspicious death in the 700 block of Druid Park Lake Drive. The boy was found in a wooded area a few hundred feet away from the road, police said.

Infant's Body Found; Mother Charged With Murder

A baby's body was found buried in Druid Hill Park. Police say the baby died due to blunt force trauma.

Andrea Fujii reports the father of the child went to police and said that the mother buried him in the park in February.

"One of the Parents did come forward and brought this to our attention. And we have a lot of other questions for the other parent," said Anthony Guglielmi, Baltimore City Police spokesperson.

The mother, Lakesha Haynie, 28, was taken into custody and has been charged with first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault and various child abuse charges.
The father of 2-month-old Rajahnthon Haynie led police Sunday to the child's tiny, dead body.  It was left just below the ground in the 700-block of Druid Hill Park Drive.

"It was buried inside a bag.  The chief medical examiner's office responded to the scene with detectives. The contents of the bag were sent away for autopsy and analysis," said Guglielmi.

The father, who has not been identified, came to police around 6 p.m. Sunday to report the death and led investigators to the scene. They found the baby around 9 p.m.

"At this point, we are speaking with one of the parents, looking to identify the second parent involved," said Guglielmi. "Homicide detectives are investigating this as a possible homicide."

Police are not saying exactly what the father told them about the circumstances surrounding the baby's death.

"We're just waiting on forensics -- autopsy results -- to lead us to an official cause of death," said Guglielmi. "The baby died elsewhere. It was buried in the park."

"I do violence prevention and research and coping with trauma.  It's really tragic when things like this happen to a community," said Tanya Sharpe.  "I hope that the family and the community can gather together and find out exactly what happened."

Forensics and that autopsy will be key to solving this case.  While police believe Rajahnthon was dead before he got to the park, why he was buried there remains a mystery for now.

"As soon as they finish the autopsy, which I believe is happening right now, we'll know more and look to catch up with this other parent involved," Guglielmi said.

Police say the mother has had four children previously taken from her by the Department of Social Services.
