Body of ‘Mr. X’ exhumed from Cleburne cemetery after 40 years
August 8, 2013

CLEBURNE — The remains of a man found slain more than 40 years ago were exhumed Thursday morning in the hope that investigators can finally learn his name and the identity of his killer.

Referred to as “Mr. X” by the Johnson County Cold Case Squad, the victim was found by a rancher on Dec. 11, 1972, dumped in a field off Road 1131A, about 14 miles northwest of Cleburne.

The body was nude and decomposing near a cedar thicket. An autopsy determined that the man had been shot three times with a .25-caliber handgun in the chest and right arm.

The case was reopened this spring by the Cold Case Squad, a group of retired law officers who volunteer their time investigating unsolved slayings.

“The best result we can hope for is to identify the individual and in doing that find out things that lead us to a suspect,” said James Ferguson, a squad member. “The killer might be getting a little old. Usually, suspects are about the same age as their victims. So this one would be in his 70s.”

After other efforts to identify the victim failed, member Jim Varnon, a retired Fort Worth police crime scene investigator, obtained a court order to exhume the remains from an unmarked grave in Rose Hill Cemetery.

“They took us out and that depression in the ground is still there after 40 years,” Varnon said. “There’s no mark but they keep real careful notations of where every body is buried. The cemetery manager said without any doubt, that is where the guy we’re looking for is buried.”
