With inflation pushing up earnings, couples will be liable for an extra £100 a year as tax thresholds do not rise correspondingly, he said.

"Thirty million working people will be hit by this new Labour stealth tax," he told Sky. "The Chancellor said nothing about the biggest tax rise in the Budget."

He added: "That tells you everything you need to know about Labour's cynical tricks and their priorities: the bill for Gordon Brown's economic mistakes is going to be paid by every working family."

However the Chancellor insisted that the middle classes would actually benefit from measures to shore up the economy.

Asked about claims his statement was governed by spite and envy, Mr Darling told the BBC: “I don’t accept that.”

He said stamp duty changes were designed to get first time buyers onto the housing ladder. But that change will be paid by a new higher, 5 per cent, rate for properties worth more than £1 million.

Mr Darling added: “One of the best ways to help middle class people is through jobs. Jobs is very much what I was talking about yesterday.”

Where are jobs on Obama's priority?  Jobs for everyone, regardless of race, ethnic, or political favoritism?  Jobs don't seem to be on Obama's priority list.

What does Obama sign into law?  Healthcare with built in racism and discrimination.  All benefits to Obama's chosen people.

"I would have set out a credible plan to deal with the debts, that would have protected our country's credit rating, kept interest rates lower for longer, and avoided the ever-increasing spiral of taxes which seem to come from this Government to working people."

Are ever-increasing spiral of taxes ever sustainable?
