Mother of Murdered Child Arrested

SANGER, Texas - Sharon Worthy, the mother of a 3-year-old boy who was killed last week, has been arrested and charged with recklessly causing injury to a child resulting in serious bodily injury. Worthy's boyfriend, Curtis Copeland, was arrested earlier and charged with capital murder.

Denton County sheriff's officers, responding to a neighbor's 911 call, found the child, Jesse Fisher, Jr., bleeding and unresponsive at Copeland's home in Sanger. The boy was taken to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth by helicopter where doctors found he was suffering from a broken pelvis, broken vertebrae, severe head trauma and bruising all over his body. Doctors also found evidence that the boy had been sexually assaulted. Fisher died from his injuries the next day.

Investigators say Worthy and her two children had been staying with Copeland for a few days, despite Child Protective Services warnings that she and her children should have no contact with Copeland because he is a convicted felon. CPS had previously investigated reports that Worthy had been physically abusive to her children. Officials say Worthy left her two children alone with Copeland while she went to the hospital to give birth to her third child.

Officials say Worthy gave several explanations for her son's injuries, including saying that he fell down some stairs. A doctor who examined the boy says the injuries were not consistent with a fall down stairs. Worthy told investigators her son's injuries started appearing after they started staying at Copeland's home.

Social workers at Cooks Children's Hospital told investigators they took Worthy into her son's hospital room the night before he died. The social worker says Worthy showed no emotion or indication she was concerned for her son's welfare.

During a follow up interview, investigators say Worthy admitted to watching Copeland push her son in the back violently, causing him to hit the wood floor and hit his head. Worthy told officers she did not report the abuse or take her son anywhere for treatment.
