Missing Wyoming teen found safe

written by: Jeffrey Wolf

CHEYENNE, Wyo. - A girl missing since Sunday has been found safe, according to a spokesman for the FBI.

The family of 15-year-old Avolon Gysel reported her missing this week.

FBI agents were called to Tuesday to assist Cheyenne Police in the search. Cheyenne Police Department detectives classified her as a runaway while she was missing.

FBI spokesman Dave Joly told 9Wants to Know he had no information about where Gysel had been. She is safe at home with her family, he said.

Gysel disappeared about 50 miles away from where 12-year-old Kayleah Wilson disappeared on March 28 when she left her Greeley home to walk to a friend's birthday party.

FBI agents do not believe there was any connection between the two cases.

The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information about Kayleah's disappearance.

Kayleah is described as 5-foot, 1-inch tall, 145 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair.

She was last seen wearing a white and pink shirt over a white tank top, blue jeans and white and red shoes. She is a student at Brentwood Middle School.

Anyone with information about Kayleah is asked to contact the Greeley Police Department at 970-350-9600. Or you can call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

If you would like to contact investigative reporter Jace Larson, e-mail jace.larson@9news.com or call 303-871-1432.

Ken Turner looks under a rock ledge on the bank of the South Platte River while searching for clues to the disappearance of his cousin, Kayleah Wilson, on Thursday at Riverside Park in Evans. The 12-year-old girl has been missing since March 28.

Volunteers comb park in search for Kayleah Wilson; dad says he hasn't heard from her

For Michael Wilson, the disappearance of his 12-year-old daughter, Kayleah, has been difficult because it's all happening so far away.

He lives in Redwood Valley, Calif., and wrote in an e-mail this week, “All I care about is getting her home safely.”

Michael Wilson said the family lived in Westminster when Kayleah was born, and he has never lived in Greeley. The last time he had contact with his daughter was last November.

He also emphasized that rumors that he is in jail are not true, and he has been talking with the FBI about the case. He has not seen his daughter since she disappeared. Some news sources have speculated that she ran away to see her father, but he said he hasn't been contacted by her.

Kayleah Wilson has been missing since March 28, when she walked from home, across the U.S. 34 Bypass in south Greeley, and across the Greeley Mall parking lot en route to a friend's birthday party.

Despite several searches involving more than 50 FBI agents, 30 Greeley police officers, and numerous volunteers and deputies from the Weld County Sheriff's Office, no trace of the girl has been found.

By an odd coincidence, the missing girl's stepfather is Jesse Wilson of Greeley, with the same last name as the girl and her birth father, but Michael Wilson said they are not related.

On Wednesday morning, a handful of people gathered at Riverside Park in Evans to continue the search for the girl. Led by Ken Turner, a cousin of Kayleah, the group spanned much of the park at 42nd Street and Golden Street.

As Turner trudged through the tall grasses and shrubs beside the river, he carried fliers showing Kayleah's picture — and asking joggers and visitors in the area if they had seen her.

After two hours, however, there was no sign of the sixth-grader from Brentwood Middle School in Greeley.

Walking behind Turner, his friend, Julia Breeden, said the search process has been agonizing.

“When you care about somebody that is in this situation, you vacillate and that's what exhausts you quickly,” Breeden said, before pausing momentarily. “This is … feels hopeless, doesn't it? When you're looking for a needle in a haystack, you know what you're looking for and you know what haystack.

“If you're looking for a person, she could be two states away. But you can't stay home, so you've got to do something.”

Sgt. Joe Tymkowych, spokesman for the Greeley Police Department, said Wednesday there were no new developments in the case.

He added, however, that efforts like the one led by Turner are appreciated.

“Of course, we encourage that,” Tymkowych said. “Anything that people can do to help us out — get the word out, do a little

bit of looking around in different places — that's fine.”

Police have received more than 325 leads in the case.

Missing girl was previously in foster care

As police, sheriff, and the FBI continue the search for 12 year old Kayleah Wilson, many community volunteers have also stepped up to help.
Yet despite all of the help and resources directed to this search, no sign of Kayleah has been found.

Few details have come to light since the search began, however there are reports that Kayleah did spend an undetermined amount of time in foster care. Reasons for her stay in foster care have not been released at this time.

There is also a MySpace page that appears to have Kayleah's name on it. A posting on the site, dated February 23rd at 6pm states, "Wishing someone would leave me alone. Stop telling my friends things to tell me just leave me alone you stalker freak.!!!". There are no photos posted on the page and it is unclear whether this is in fact Kayleah's MySpace page. The last login, made from a cell phone, is dated March 31st.

just the fact that it was a sunday, and restaurants are usually busy during the weeekend, someone who likes to eat a lot is definitely somebody I would want to check, men who like to eat A LOT, the gluttonous type, probably don't gain a lot of weight and are single or by themselves, I would be suspicious of them too.

Good Morning Monkeys and guest!

Pi.....what in the world has how much a person eats got to do with a missing child? This makes no sense at all.
And it does not matter what she looks like or how she acts. She could walk down the street buck naked and that does not give anyone the right to touch her or abduct her.

I do understand about the busy restaurant and sunday..
Some person should have observed her.
No Witness to her. So strange since that may have been her path.

How many abandoned homes in the area ?? any with basements ?
How many homeless in the area ? Any Drug related people ?

I am thinking the last login was probably from a relative, friend or I suppose the police checking on the site. If not, I bet they can get the number or placement of the phone. Wasn't it said she didn't have a cell phone with her though?

PI I don't understand the eating thing either, sorry you lost me on that one. I suppose you are getting at maybe it is a regular at the restaurant? Maybe someone that comes in to eat at a normal time or day? Not sure if a pedo would do something like that to stalk a victim, I suppose so. However, the people sitting near the windows that day at the restaurant may recall seeing something.

I hope not to ruffle anyones feathers but I don't believe the Mother's story. My hinkymeter is off the charts on this one for some reason. IMO, there is much more to her story. Perhaps something happened and she is covering for someone. Also, the myspace pages appear fake or set up by someone else. Again, just my opinion based on my observations.
I hope this dear girl is located soon and safe but the odds are not good.

Mods if you feel this opinion is inappropriate, please delete. I would not be offended.

Still no Amber Alert for missing Greeley girl

GREELEY, Colo. (KKCO) - Greeley police said officials haven't determined if Kayleah Wilson ran away or was abducted.

She disappeared after leaving her home to walk to a birthday party in Greeley.

Amber Alerts go out instantly via text to cell phone subscribers and to radio and television stations.

They are also posted on electronic highway signs to alert motorists.

Criteria for Amber Alerts include information that a child may be in danger or vehicle and suspect descriptions.

Colorado's Amber Alert managers say the criteria are there so that the public doesn't ignore alerts when too many are issued.

Kayleah Wilson case: Backpack ‘lead' goes nowhere

Mike Peters

What could have been a major lead in the case of a missing 12-year-old girl in Greeley turned out to be an old backpack.

An employee at a business in the area of 13th Street and 8th Avenue told police Wednesday that he had a backpack that once belonged to missing Kayleah Wilson. But he'd had the backpack for several months.

The man, who said he didn't want to be identified, said he purchased the backpack last October at a church sale. He was looking at the backpack Wednesday and realized it had Kayleah's name in it.

Police met with the man and then contacted Kayleah's mother, April Wilson, who told them the family had donated the backpack to the church last year.

Investigators from Greeley police and the FBI said there were no new leads in the case, and they did not have a press conference Thursday. More than 50 FBI agents, 25 Greeley police officers and about 50 Weld County sheriff's deputies, posse members and volunteers are involved in the case.

Today, Kayleah has been missing 12 days. She left her home March 28 to walk to a birthday party behind the Greeley Mall. She never arrived at the party, and despite 325 leads called in to police, plus officers and agents knocking on more than a thousand doors to try to find the girl, she has vanished.

Kayleah is 5-foot-1, 145 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. When last seen, she was wearing a pink and white shirt over a white tank top, blue jeans and red and white shoes.

I don't get that from the mother! I get lazy and possibly uneducated, but I find her genuine. Not knowing any other way to express ones point, the best thing to do is mock the way others have done it before. I think her daughter is truly missing.

I would also take one theory at a time and work it untill it does not fit. The possible pregnancy and clinic theory does not wash.

Did the mom do an interview or something? I think I must have missed it, would someone mind bumping it? I can't find one.

Hi Tracygirl.

I don't think I recall an interview with her mother.  Although IIRC in a news article it said something about the mom not talking to the press.

The mom hasn't been very vocal in this case.  Another family member is the spokes person.  My impression is that she has little ones to take care of as well as dealing with a missing child.

FBI Presence Increases In Search For Missing Girl

Greeley -  4/1/2010

Investigators with the FBI evidence recovery team spent most of the day inside the apartment where Kayleah lives collecting evidence to find any clues to her whereabouts. police say that several new members of the FBI have joined the investigation including behavioral experts as well as missing persons specialists, but still so far nothing. Stephanie Sanchez Kayleah's neighbor says its just a strange situation.

We made several attempts to contact Kayleah's mother April Wilson who was in the apartment but she did not answer the door. Someone inside ripped down a poster of Mickey Mouse from a top floor window.
Investigators left the impression with reporters this afternoon that she wouldn't be talking.

John Diebold is Kayleah's principal at Brentwood Middle School. teachers and students have now made ribbons in support of Kayleah and says they are doing everything they can to help with the investigation.

John says this has been tough on him personally as well, and says he hopes for the safe return of Kayleah.

if the myspace was a fake, then someone would have had to use kayleah's phone to go onto her myspace to write that message someone was stalking her. The article said she used her phone to access her myspace.

There is also a MySpace page that appears to have Kayleah's name on it. A posting on the site, dated February 23rd at 6pm states, "Wishing someone would leave me alone. Stop telling my friends things to tell me just leave me alone you stalker freak.!!!". There are no photos posted on the page and it is unclear whether this is in fact Kayleah's MySpace page.  just need to know where her phone is, who's prints are on it, in my other post I wrote that a person who likes to eat a lot could have been at a restaurant that day, I meant that somebody who was ordering a lot of food that is more than anyone can eat, as if he was hoping to get a date or more than one... I'll try to make myself more clear that's if anyone doesn't take me too seriously. I am not good at making conversations or writing letters, so it's too late, I guess I wish I could go back and correct my posts but it won't let me. Sometimes I forget that I am talking about a real serious situation, and I get mesmerized and try to come up with some logical explanation and it comes out like garbage. Kayleah seems like a typical pre-teen, just wish she would find a way to get back to her family.

sorry, the article didn't mention if it was kayleah's cell phone that accessed her myspace or if it was somebody else's cell phone that accessed myspace login to type the message. i wonder if kayleah's mom would let her access the internet on her cell phone. that costs a lot of money to use the internet on your cell phone. all her friends including her ex-boyfriend's cell phone records should be checked out about the media usage or internet usage...im sure they did because they know everything.
