FBI cutting back on missing girl investigation

Staff reports

After more than two weeks of not finding leads or clues to where Kayleah Wilson has gone, the FBI has cut back on the number of agents working the case in Greeley.

Kayleah, 12, disappeared March 28 after she left her south Greeley home to meet a friend for a birthday party. She never met up with the friend or the party. The case has gained national attention, and tips — more than 300 — have been flowing into the Greeley police and FBI hotlines.

FBI spokesman Dave Joly said Tuesday the FBI has closed the command post they'd set up two weeks ago with the Greeley police. “But we're keeping the post area set up in case we need it."

The command post is in the Greeley Police station, which is also connected to the FBI hotline.

“We've cut back on the number of agents working the case,” Joly said, “but they can be back up here immediately if something breaks.”

Kayleah's mother, April Wilson, said that while the FBI has cut back, they won't. "We still have hope out there that she's alive and will be home," April Wilson said. "And we're still looking for anyone who wants to help."

Joly said they've found no evidence to support the rumors that Kayleah ran away or was abducted. The police and FBI have been fielding numerous theories and tips about the case since they offered a $10,000 reward for information that would lead to her return.

Anyone with information on the disappearance of Kayleah, is asked to call the Greeley police at (970) 350-9600. The FBI tip line is (800) CALL-FBI.

FBI plans update on Kayleah Wilson case tomorrow

Staff reports

Officials plan to release a new update on the Kayleah Wilson case Thursday afternoon.

The 12-year-old girl from Greeley was last seen by her mother March 28 as she left their home across the highway from the mall. She said she was walking to a birthday party south of the shopping center and never showed up.

The case has gained national attention, and tips — more than 300 — have been flowing in to the Greeley police and FBI hot lines. This week, the FBI closed the command post they'd set up two weeks ago with the Greeley police. “But we're keeping the post set up in case we need it. The command post is in the Greeley police station, which is also connected to the FBI hotline, said FBI spokesman Dave Joly on Tuesday. "We've cut back on the number of agents working the case, but they can be back up here immediately if something breaks.”

Thursday's press conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Greeley Police Department headquarters, 2875 10th St. in Greeley.

COMMUNITY SEARCHES
Despite the cutbacks in the investigation, volunteer searches will not give up. Michelle Thompson of Greeley, who started a Facebook connection for Kayleah, also has organized more searches.

“We've started the Kayleah Wilson Recovery Center,” Thompson said, “and we'll have weekend searches. We're not quitting.”

This Saturday and Sunday, volunteer searchers can report to the Journey Christian Church, 23rd Avenue and 27th Street in Greeley, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

To participate on the search, the volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have a valid photo ID. No children or dogs will be allowed in the searches, but Thompson said they could use people on horseback or on all-terrain vehicles.

For more information, call Thompson at (970) 308-1678.

Kayleah Wilson search not over: Volunteers needed

By Michael Roberts, Wednesday, Apr. 14 2010 @ 12:59PM

Kayleah hasn't been forgotten.
Young Kayleah Wilson is still missing more than two weeks after heading off to a March 28 birthday party -- and while her friends, family and other concerned folks are keeping up their spirits on a Facebook page devoted to her, they need help to continue looking for her in the Greeley area.

The search is now being coordinated by an organization called the Kayleah Wilson Recovery Center, which is trying to line up volunteers able to devote part of their weekend to the task. In the meantime, the FBI has announced the first press conference about Kayleah in several days; it will take place at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Greeley Police Department.

Check below for volunteer information:

As search for Kayleah continues, Search Volunteers needed!

Greeley, Colorado - April 14, 2010 -- The 'Laura Recovery Center,' a Texas based organization
that was established to locate missing children, has been helping with the search almost since
    day 1.

12-year-old Kayleah Wilson has been missing since March 28th, and was last seen in the area of the Greeley Mall. Since her disappearance, hundreds of volunteers and law enforcement, including the FBI, have been searching for Kayleah.

The search for Kayleah has not ended, and the Kayleah Wilson Recovery Center has taken charge of organizing another weekend of "Community Searches." In order to make the most of these efforts, as many volunteers as possible from across Colorado are needed.

    CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!

The Kayleah Wilson Recover Center is calling for volunteers from across the state to participate in this weekend's search. Between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., search volunteers are asked to report to: Journey Church, 2332 W. 27th St,, Greeley, Colorado, 80634. Volunteers should be at least 18 years of age, and should dress appropriately for rugged terrain. Volunteers are not required to have any previous experience, but any experience is greatly welcomed.

Please call the Greeley Police Department or the FBI at 1-800-225-5324 if you have any information about KAYLEAH WILSON.

i'd be checking every myspace or facebook  or any social networking site for every person who lives in colorado, maybe if Kayleah was taken away by someone, the person could be a sex offender and can also be on parole and is not following through with the terms of parole by using the internet. That is one way, there are other ways too but this is something I know anyone can do and its probably been done, not to be persuasive, maybe it could help find Kayleah.

sorry i didn't mean to make it sound like Kayleah could have been taken by a sex offender, what I meant to say is by checking every social networking site for people who live in colorado, you can find a person or persons of interest (POI). I didnt mean to judge this missing person's case, I don't like when a young girl goes missing and there are no clues, maybe there are but we can't see them...

Does anyone know when the party was scheduled to start? If Kayleah left at 3:00 pm, thats about a 15 to 20 minute walk. If she had made it to the party she would have arrived around 3:15 to 3:20pm. If the party did not start till 4:00 p.m. then Kayleah would have time to kill at the mall. Also she told her mother that she would be home by 7:00 pm. Did she arrange to get a ride home. It would have been dark at 7:00 p.m., and not safe for a 12 year old to be walking. How many others went to this party and did any of them take the same route that Kayleah did. What time did they take that route and did they see anything?

Are there any gas stations with surveillance cameras along that stretch of road. If the perp stopped for food, he could have stopped for gas too. When I drive long distances I make a stop for gas first and then look for a place to eat. Then it's back on the road.

Greeley Police Chief Jerry Garner speaks at a press conference on Thursday about the status of the investigation into the disappearance of 12-year-old Kayleah Wilson at the Greeley Police Station. Wilson was reported missing on March 28, 2010 after she didn't come home from a friend's birthday party.

Police issue ‘profile' of potential abductor in Kayleah Wilson case

Hoping to attract more tips on the Kayleah Wilson case, the FBI is doubling the reward and giving tips about what could be the odd behavior of a possible abductor.

Although Greeley police and the FBI were quick Thursday to say they had no evidence that the 12-year-old had been abducted, Police Chief Jerry Garner said, “I wouldn't be surprised to find that someone is holding her in the Greeley area.”

Asking people in Greeley to be alert because if Kayleah was abducted, the person who took her could live in or around Greeley, the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit gave several tips about what to watch for:

»People who come up with an excuse to leave this area unexpectedly for what may sound like a good reason, such as a work-related move, visiting a distant relative or friend.

»People who have missed work, called in sick, or asked to change shifts, particularly on days close to when the girl went missing.

»People with unexplained recent injuries, such as cuts or bruises on the head, hands or arms.

»An unexpected or sudden interest in the status of the investigation, paying very close attention to the media or avoiding conversations or activities related to the case.

»Minimizing or denying a known acquaintance with Kayleah.

»A recent display of nervousness or irritability.

»An increase or decrease in expressing religious beliefs.

»Changes in routine sleep patterns.

»Changes in the “usual” consumption of alcohol, drugs or cigarettes, either an increase or decrease.

»Shaving off facial or head hair, or growing a mustache or beard.

»A person who is no longer driving, or changes the appearance of his or her vehicle for no obvious reason. These include suddenly keeping it in a shed or garage, covering it, painting or selling the vehicle, or reporting it was stolen or given away.

The reward in the case was raised to $20,000 because the investigators haven't been getting as many leads in the case in recent days, said Special Agent-In-Charge Jim Davis.

Regarding the behavioral analysis of the possible abductor, Davis said “In our experience, we've seen this type of behavior before in suspects, and we hope people will look for these changes.”

The 12-year-old girl disappeared almost three weeks ago when she left home to walk to meet a friend for a birthday party. She hasn't been seen since.

In addition to the increased reward, the FBI also announced Thursday that they are cutting back on the number of agents who are in Greeley working the case. At one time, more than 50 people from the FBI were on the case, but because of the decrease in leads, they are cutting back.

Garner said the case is very unusual because they haven't found anything to lead them toward a runaway or an abduction, “But our concern and worries increase by the day.”

ERIC BELLAMY/ebellamy@greeleytribune.com FBI Agent in Charge Jim Davis speaks at a press conference regarding the status of the investigation into the disappearance of 12-year-old Kayleah Wilson on Thursday April 15, 2010 at the Greeley, Colo. Police Station. Wilson was reported missing on Sunday, March 28, 2010 after she didn't come home from a friend's birthday party.

Missing girl: FBI increases reward, asks for help

Hoping to attract more tips, the FBI today announced a doubling of the reward for information in the Kayleah Wilson case, and also gave hints about the behavior of a possible abductor.

Asking people in Greeley to be alert, because if Kayleah was abducted, the person who would have taken her could live in or around Greeley.

The FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit gave out several tips about what to watch for:

• People who have missed work, called in sick, or asked to change shifts, particularly on days close to when the girl went missing.

• People with unexplained recent injuries, such as cuts or bruises on the head, hands, or arms.

• An unexpected or sudden interest in the status of the investigation, paying very close attention to the media or avoiding conversations or activities related to the case.

• Shaving of facial or head hair, or growing a mustache or beard.

The reward in the case was raised to $20,000, because the investigators haven't been getting as many leads in the case in recent days, said Special Agent-In-Charge Jim Davis.

Regarding the BAU analysis of the possible abductor, Davis said “In our experience, we've seen this type of behavior before in suspects and we hope people will look for these changes.”

The FBI and Greeley police ask that anyone who has information on the case call (970) 350-9600, or 1-800-CALL-FBI.

The 12-year-old girl disappeared almost three weeks ago, on March 28, when she left home to walk to meet a friend for a birthday party. She hasn't been seen since.

In addition to the increased reward, the FBI also announced at the Thursday press conference that they are cutting back on the number of agents who are in Greeley working the case. At one time, more than 50 FBI agents were on the case.

Also formed this week is the Kayleah Wilson Recovery Center, which will be directing searches for the girl this weekend. Volunteers are asked to report to the Journey Christian Church, 2332 W. 27th St. Searches will be conducted between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and volunteers can report to the church at anytime Saturday or Sunday.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have a valid ID, and should dress for walking rugged terrain. Horseback searches and people with ATV vehicle are also urged to volunteer.

For questions about the recovery center or searches, call (970)-308-1678.

I hope that the "potential abductor" is not from another county or state. Armchair, I think Kayleah was going to walk home by herself, but im not sure.  I wish she could have taken a trolley or bus like they have in Temecula  around Old Town and the Promenade Mall that gives free rides, but im not sure if Greeley does that sort of thing.

Hi P.I.!  Thank you for and everyone for all of your hard work looking for Kayleah.  When I read your comment about the mesamonumentstriders it made me think this group is in Grand Junction not Greeley. Grand Junction is in Mesa County (home to Mesa State College and near the Grand Mesa).  It is also located next to Colorado National Monument. I googled the number and according to reverse lookup it is a Grand Junction number. Grand Junction is on the other side of the state than Greeley.

Says posted today but seems like some old news:

http://www.greeleytribune.com/article/20100417/NEWS/100419718/1051&ParentProfile=1001

Search continues for Kayleah Wilson

Mike Peters,
Searches will be conducted throughout the weekend for Greeley's missing 12-year-old girl, Kayleah Wilson, and police said rumors of her body being found are not true.

Michelle Thompson, an organizer of the search and the new Kayleah Wilson Recovery Center, said that since the group announced the search, she's been flooded with calls.

“I'm getting tons of calls from people who want to know where and when they can help,” Thompson said Friday. “I've had volunteer searchers, people with ATVs call, and a group of divers. I'm not sure we need the divers right now, but we can use the searchers.”

Volunteers are asked to report to the Journey Christian Church, 2332 27th St. in Greeley, between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday or Sunday.

Although there have been rumors that her body has been found, Greeley police Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said that isn't true. “We received a lot of calls about that, but we need to assure everyone that we're still searching.”

He said people may have heard about a 15-year-old Wyoming girl, who was missing, but her body was found last week east of Ethete, Wyo. Late Friday, officials from the FBI announced that two Wyoming men have been charged in connection with the death of the girl.

Tymkowych said the police are working with the volunteer searchers in Greeley and the search organization.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have a valid ID. They also should dress for walking rugged terrain. Horseback searches and people with ATV vehicles also are urged to volunteer.

This week, the FBI said they are cutting back on the number of agents working the case, unless something else breaks on it. Greeley police, the FBI and the Weld County Sheriff's Office have searched thousands of homes, searched throughout Greeley and the outskirts of town.

Kayleah disappeared March 28 when she left home in south Greeley, telling her mother she was going to meet a friend and go to a birthday party. She hasn't been seen since.

The FBI has doubled the reward — now $20,000 — for information that would lead to the closing of the case. This week, the FBI Behavioral Science Unit released a list of personality changes to look for if there was an abductor in this case. Those changes include changing one's appearance, changing the looks of a car, showing extensive interest in the case and unexplained injuries such as cuts and bruises to the hands, arms and face.

sorry klaas, that was some bad thinking to post, yet another bad choice. Just read the new article and they are spreading rumors so now I think somebody out there doesn't want anyone to search.

This friend she was to meet on 23rd st., when she didn't show up why did she not call Kayleahs house when she (the friend) arrived at the party. Wouldn't she have wondered why this girl didn't show up. Did Kayleah bale on her friend before and that would make her not question why she did not show? Does Kayleah's mother have a phone in the home?

Also they went to church that day. Are there any church members who are a little bit odd. Did the church member know she was headed to a party?

If you take us34 out of town, where would you be in 15 min if you were driving? Where would you be in 20 min if you were driving? Abductions with the intent to rape take place 30 min to one hour after the abductions.

when a friend doesn't meet up with you when you expect them too I know I would be disappointed, a bit angry and distrustful of that friend, this happened to me and you are right about the friend, maybe Kayleah was waiting for the friend and that is why she was hanging around the mall and all that time waiting the alleged perp was probably watching her. I wonder if any teen runners in the area ever have felt like they are or were being watched, maybe they know something more and have reported incidents where they have been stalked, hopefully welld county sheriff deputies are tracking them down and keeping a close eye around areas where children and teens hang out in the area.

I think it would be hard to find a church member who is odd because I think people when they are in church, they tend to look the other way when they see something odd, I would be looking at someone who just decded they wanted to go to church and they are not religious, I dont mean to implicate anyone,  right now they may not have a suspect . but  I think everyone right now in Greeley is going to be under suspicion, no matter what they do or who they are.. if this post is inappropriate
