New Casey Anthony judge sets tone for lawyers

Judge Belvin Perry set an April 30 date for a status hearing, and he serves notice in his order that he expects an orderly, professional case.

True to his reputation, new Casey Anthony judge Belvin Perry wasted little time laying out his expectations for attorneys on both sides of the murder case.

Perry today signed an order calling for an April 30 status hearing on the capital case, and the order spelled out what Perry has in mind for the direction of a case now in its second year.

In the first sentence in the order, Perry reminded prosecutors and defense attorneys that the Florida Rules of Judicial Administration say that: "Judges and lawyers have a professional obligation to conclude litigation as soon as possible . . ."

Perry also put attorneys on notice about how their behavior in court: He asked that they "familiarize themselves with the Ninth Judicial Circuit Courtroom Decorum Policy" and follow it "at all times."

Perry assumed control of the case Monday when judge Stan Strickland withdrew from it after defense attorneys said he was friendly with a local blogger.

Perry, the chief judge, decided to take the case.

In his order, Perry asked attorneys from both sides to come prepared to:

Discuss discovery and scheduling deadlines.

•Discuss future motion deadlines.

•Discuss motions that are still pending.

•And discuss pre-trial and trial dates.

The order reflects Perry's reputation for efficiency. He also asked attorneys to provide him a list of motions that will require evidentiary hearings and those based on pleadings and to give courtesy copies to the court of future motions.

The motion that defense attorneys filed asking that Strickland be removed from the case was not provided to the court ahead of time, court administrators said.

Meanwhile, the State Attorney's office will release another batch of discovery on Friday morning in the capital murder case against Casey Anthony.

Some of the new evidence could involve information gleaned from an FBI handwriting expert, according to a report by WFTV.com.

Anthony's defense team has requested records about analyst Lorie Gottesman, the station reported.

The state recently released copies of letters exchanged between Anthony and another Orange County Jail inmate, Robyn Adams. Anthony remains at the jail; Adams is in federal prison.

Anthony's family recently handed over a journal of hers to investigators, the station reported.

The new judge in the Casey Anthony case is wasting no time showing why he's known for his no-nonsense approach. 

Chief Judge Belvin Perry Jr. set a case management hearing for Friday April 22, demanding both sides be ready to discuss deadlines for releasing evidence, questioning expert witnesses and filing future motions. 

Judge Perry also wants to discuss the trial date - now set for May 2011 - legal experts say he could move it forward. 

Attached to the notice is Perry's list of rules for courtroom decorum, including attorneys only identifying each other by last name, avoiding personal attacks and cutting back on gestures, facial expressions and audible comments during witness testimony.

  oh oh......Jeff is gonna have to control himself too!  But BOZO is in big trouble!!

IMO, this looks like if she is convicted.....they are gonna throw ALL THE A's under the bus....BIG TIME...not that that isn't where they deserve to be....

So they want not to reveal them as witnesses at time time....DUH!  there my be other people....like Jesse, they intend to call....remember she told him that Lee had sexually assaulted her...and they don't want to alert Jesse ahead of time.........

So Lyon's leaked a doc that says they don't want to reveal their penalty phase stradgey or witnesses until she is convicted.  Honey I think by leaking this doc you just did that! 

Who is the mitigation specialist on their team?  Is it the other Jose perhaps?  If so they may actually have a chance at getting her to plead..Casey thinks he's hot.

Since these were always the rules that were in effect in the 9th Judicial Courtroom..I think that Stan let them get way with so much...maybe to give them enough rope so people could see how rediculous the whole defense team and the A's really are. 

I hope we see Cindy and George get admonished by the Judge..I just no they can't control their behavior or facial expressions any better then their daughter.

Wonder if his orders about facial expressions extend to the spectators?  It drives me nuts when george is back there shaking his head (no) about everything the State says. We all know how much ALL of the A's strain against any authority. Should be really interesting, the stomping in and out of court, the tissue passing, Bozo....(too much to detail!)

I was one who constantly stated I wished JS would start getting tough with the DUHfence .........but now I think it just wasn't his style. I do believe her bent over backwards to ensure the DUHFence would have no reason for an appeal. It is a damn shame that a simple act of saying hello and complimenting someone came to this. I do think the DUHfence will regret asking JS to recuse himself and I WONDER WHO was responsible for starting that ball rolling......whoever it was ....ooowwwwwwEEEEEEEEEE I would not like to be in his/her shoes

Does anyone believe the Anthonys are finally turning on their daughter to save their own sorry behinds?  Interesting them turning over the journal.  Maybe we will finally hear what Cindy really thinks of her precious "bad seed."  The truth will set you free, and then maybe you will all end up where you belong.  In prison.

Hi Faith........I don't think turning over the journal signifies anything.........IIRC the State has already seen the journal...........now if by chance, it is discovered sin=cin wrote that 2003 date then I see even more trouble for them.....but if this is the same journal I am thinking about BC had it.

TY Sunny for that info on Barret.  I think she is about to become the most important member of their team.  There are lots of motions to be filed yet..but at the end I think they are going to turn to Casey and tell her it is in her best interest to plea.   Now rather she will or not is a different matter.  They need to be ready to defend against the DP ..but I truly think a jury would return a LWOP /No appeals instead.

But I can tell you from experience...anytime a booboo happens in a law office you can bet the crap will roll down hill.....so someone in the mail room mistakenly sent the FAX to who ever it went to in the media....it was only supposed to go to BOZO and Mason for signature...yep it was that guy in the mail room

Sure no problem.....she has spent a lot of hours with KC.  And I do agree with you, she will play an very important roll in this case.

A friend who I impose on regularly for legal info told me that IHO Mason was brought in to secure a plea....she said that it looks as though Lyons alienated so many people early on from educating the judge to her famous seminar speech that it is best for her to work behind the scene as much as possible. Plus she is an out o towner   I have my doubts that the defense and the State could ever come together on a plea deal. But who knows..at this juncture nothing will surprise me.  bjut if this does go to court and she is convicted the A's...ALL OF THEM are going to be put up as being responsible for KC being the animal she is. So they all need to look at changing their names, getting reconstructive surgery and leaving town.  JMO
