Police look for man who stabbed 2 women in Seattle

SEATTLE (AP) -- Two women were stabbed while they slept at home by a man who slipped through a door or window, rattling residents of the south Seattle neighborhood because the assailant, who remained on the loose, may have chosen the victims at random.

Police distributed fliers and called a neighborhood meeting Monday to talk about the crime that left one woman dead and the other seriously wounded.

"He's considered very, very dangerous. This is a man who clearly has evil intent, again very predatory in nature with the attack, and we need to get him off the street." Assistant Police Chief Nicholas J. "Nick" Metz told KING Television.

An intense manhunt for a man in his late 20s or early 30s was under way. The 40-year-old woman who survived described him as slim but muscular, about 6 feet tall and 160 pounds, with a thin mustache.

A 37-year-old woman died at the scene and the other woman was released Monday after being treated at Harborview Medical Center for multiple stab wounds. Authorities would not release the identity of either one.

Investigators believe the man slipped into the house through an open or unlocked window or door. Neighbors reported seeing the two women run screaming from the house while the attacker fled on foot.

As of Monday afternoon, hours before a meeting at the South Park Community Center, investigators had not determined who the attacker might be, nor was there any indication that he was acquainted with the women, Officer Mark A. Jamieson said.

"At this point it seems like it's random or a stranger," Jamieson said.

Officers appealed to the public for any information that could shed light on the attack.

"We're taking it very seriously," said Gregg Snodgrass, who lives about a block from where the stabbing occurred. "It's scary to imagine a nightmare like this happening."

Nicolas Ramirez told KING Television he was awakened by screams, looked outside his bedroom window and saw a neighbor bleeding at the end of her driveway.

"I heard the lady say, 'I don't want to die, I don't want to die,' then, 'Tell my mom I love her,' and those were the last words I heard from her," Ramirez said.

Another neighbor, Albert Barrientes, told KOMO Television the woman who died was naked and "covered in blood, all the way from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet."

Ramirez said his teenage daughter brought towels to help the women try to stop their bleeding before medics arrived and is now staying with friends in another part of town.

"She's in shock and doesn't want to come home," he said. "I'm worried because as far as I know he's out there on the loose."

By KOMO Staff SEATTLE – Seattle police detectives have developed a "person of interest" who they believe may be connected to the brutal double stabbing that left one woman dead Sunday in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood.
Teresa Butz, 39, was killed in the attack. The surviving victim, a 36-year-old woman, is recovering from her injuries.

Surveillance video from SPD.

Person of Interest
Anyone with information about the person in the surveillance video is urged to call the Seattle Police homicide tip line at (206) 233-5000, or call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

Detectives have uncovered surveillance video of a man that they are now calling a "person of interest." They say the identity of the man is unknown and they need the public's assistance to identify him.

At this point in the investigation, he is being sought for questioning only. Police say his hair may be shorter than depicted in the attached video. He may or may not still have the brown-and-white pit bull with him.

Detectives believe that the man may frequent South Seattle, as well as Auburn and Federal Way.

Detectives have previously released a sketch of the person they believe responsible for the crime. The suspect is described as a black male, 20 to 30 years old, 5-feet-10, with a medium brown complexion.

The brutal stabbings have traumatized the South Park community, and law enforcement agencies have responded to their concerns.

"Our community's in shock right now. We've been terrorized," said Tim Smith, an area resident. "Obviously this person has not been apprehended yet, so what I'd like to ask the police and the mayor is to please provide some additional presence of law enforcement."

According to investigators, the attacker apparently entered the women's home through an open window and repeatedly stabbed them at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

"They did their best to fight him off," Seattle Assistant Police Chief Nick Metz said.

Both women, covered in blood, ran screaming from the modest one-story house and the man fled on foot. Horrified neighbors watched as Butz died before aid could arrive. Her partner, 39, was treated for multiple stab wounds at Harborview Medical Center and has been released.

Neighbor Albert Barrientes said he heard somebody screaming and yelling, "Help, help, help!"

When he ran outside, he saw both women bloodied from stab wounds, and he spoke with the woman who died.

"She was laying on the ground, covered in blood, all the way from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet. And she was naked, completely, all the way down.

"She told me that the guy had told them to do what he asked them to do and he wouldn't harm them. She turned around and said, 'Albert, he lied,"' he said.

The other victim made it across the street to a neighbor's home to seek help. She was able to talk briefly with the first officers who arrived, then was rushed to the hospital.

The two "were just about to get married," said Christine Cherif, a neighbor.

Metz said police had not established a motive for the attack and had not ruled out a sex or hate crime. He would not comment on whether either or both of the women had been sexually assaulted.

The two women had moved recently to South Park, a residential enclave in a heavily industrialized area west of the Duwamish River and Boeing Field.

Anyone with information about this person is urged to call the Seattle Police homicide tip line at (206) 233-5000.

Those wishing to remain anonymous are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477 or text TIP486 with your information to CRIMES (274637).

Man arrested in Seattle woman's fatal stabbing

SEATTLE (AP) -- A 23-year-old man with a violent history has been arrested in a brutal attack that killed one woman and injured another as they slept in their home.

Isaiah M.K. Kalebu was taken into custody Friday for questioning and was scheduled to be booked into jail for investigation of murder, said Sgt. Sean Whitcomb.

Police had released a photo of Kalebu on Friday, describing him as their primary suspect and the person shown in a surveillance video they also released. Kalebu was later found with his pit bull in Seattle's Magnuson Park.

Kalebu is suspected in the July 19 murder of Teresa Butz, 39, and the wounding of her partner, a 36-year-old woman, who was injured when they were stabbed by a man who apparently entered through their home in Seattle's South Park neighborhood through a window.

Police did not disclose any details about evidence linking Kalebu to the stabbings.

The Seattle Times said Kalebu was scheduled for trial on domestic violence charges Aug. 6 in King County, accused of threatening to kill his mother while he lived with her in 2008.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said Friday night that Kalebu also had been questioned, but not charged, after a Tacoma-area fire on July 9 that killed two people, including Kalebu's aunt, Rachel Kalebu, 61. The woman had just obtained a domestic violence protection order against him.

Troyer told The Associated Press that the young man was "still under the umbrella of suspicion" and that there were "no other suspects" in the fire.

Court records in the King County case show Kalebu was charged with felony harassment and first-degree malicious mischief. Prosecutors say he threatened to kill his mother after she confronted him in March 2008 for not taking prescribed medication for "bipolar and manic-depressive" conditions, according to court documents.

A state psychologist evaluation in 2008 found he "did not have the capacity to rationally understand" the case against him at that time.

Seattle police have called the South Park stabbings one of the most brutal crimes they've seen. The victims eventually managed to get outside after the attack.

Before she died, Butz talked to a neighbor, Albert Barrientes, saying of the attacker: "He told us if we did what he asked us to do, he wouldn't hurt us. He lied, he lied."

Butz's partner, who has not been identified, was released Monday from Harborview Medical Center.

Bail set at $10M for Seattle stabbing suspect

By GENE JOHNSON
Associated Press Writer
SEATTLE (AP) -- A judge Saturday set bail at $10 million for a man accused of breaking into a south Seattle home and stabbing two women, one fatally.

Fingerprints and bodily fluids tied Isaiah M.K. Kalebu, a 23-year-old man with a history of mental illness, to the July 19 attack, police said.

Investigators said Kalebu crawled through an open window at the home in Seattle's South Park neighborhood and attacked Teresa Butz, 39, and her 36-year-old partner. He stabbed both women, Seattle police officer Dana Duffy wrote in a probable cause statement made public Saturday, and their 3 a.m. screams awoke neighbors.

Butz died after fleeing through a bathroom window and running into the street, naked and covered in blood. Her partner ran out the front door, also naked and blood-soaked, and at a hospital a few hours later gave police a detailed account of the attack.

Residents were on edge for days as police tried to identify the assailant. On Friday, after investigators released surveillance video of a suspect with his pit bull, a bus driver spotted Kalebu and the dog near Seattle's Magnuson Park and called 911.

There appeared to be blood on his green jacket when authorities arrested him, Duffy wrote.

Kalebu appeared for a bail hearing Saturday afternoon at the King County Jail, where he is being held for investigation of murder, rape, attempted murder and burglary. Prosecutors have until Wednesday to file charges, said Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for the King County prosecutor's office.

Authorities said Kalebu also is suspected in a July 9 fire that killed his aunt, Rachel Kalebu, 61, and a man who lived in her Tacoma-area home south of Seattle, former NFL quarterback John Eddie Jones, 57.

After the fire, King County prosecutors asked Superior Court Judge Brian Gain to revoke Kalebu's bail in a separate harassment case - one in which he is accused of threatening to kill his mother. The judge declined, Donohoe said.

Six days later, according to police, he attacked Butz and her partner.

As she was dying, Butz told a neighbor, Albert Barrientes: "He told us if we did what he asked us to do, he wouldn't hurt us. He lied, he lied."

Investigators said Kalebu remains the only person of interest in the fire at his aunt's home in University Place. Authorities have been awaiting lab results in the case.

"When we saw the video of the suspect with the pit bull, all of our hearts down here skipped a beat," Sgt. Ed Troyer of the Pierce County sheriff's office, which is investigating the fire, told The Seattle Times. "Unfortunately, we didn't have enough to arrest him."

The harassment charges Kalebu faces stem from a March 2008 incident in which he is accused of threatening his mother after she confronted him about not taking prescribed medication for "bipolar and manic-depressive" conditions.

Kalebu told his mother, "Enjoy your last day on earth," and left the house, only to return the next day and throw a large rock through the windshield of her car, a police affidavit said.

A state psychologist evaluation in 2008 found he "did not have the capacity to rationally understand" the case against him at that time.

Butz is the sister of the Tony-winning Broadway star Nobert Leo Butz, who has a lead role in the new musical "Catch Me If You Can" based on the 2002 Steven Spielberg film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. Preview performances of the musical at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre were canceled after the slaying. The performances are scheduled to resume Tuesday.
