ANNETTE SYKES

Nancy Grace - April 22, 2010
ly
ANNETTE SYKES, HALEIGH`S GREAT-GRANDMOTHER: ... Ms. Hollars called me and told me -- she certainly did -- that she had called down here and told them what Tommy had told her. And Teresa and I went and -- over to that area and walked around all afternoon and looked in the woods over there. But of course, we didn`t find anything.

Hi Monkeys.

This may not be a popular opinion, but I don't have a problem with Hope's sentence.  It is a sad commentary on your parentage when you learn at age 18 that there really are consequences for your actions.  I don't have a clue what the correct answers may be, but when I look at these people I see multiple generations that have really crappy parents.      I'm sure Hope was just as innocent as HaLeigh at one time.  And just look at her now - a disrespectful, drug selling, stripper.
call me callous but I'm hoping she's in jail past her child-bearing years.  The cycle will likely never ever end with this family and those like it (croslins, etc.)

Amen!!!! However, with most states,  the jail system is over crowded,  I think she plead no contest in hopes of getting released early.  That is a major problem with our system.  They lock these people up for said amount of years, then they release them earlyu cause they have no room in the system for them.

We need to buy an island way out at sea.  Drop everyone off there.   Let them fend for themselves.  Helicopter food to them daily.   And be done with them.   The cycle has been 3 generations in this family.   You can tell by the photos the ones using drugs.   Something has to change within our system.

From what I understand she will serve at least 12 and probably all 15 years.  Laws are tough in Florida.

We could send all prisoners to Iraq/Afghanistan and bring our good soldiers home.  I bet they will have a different attitude when they get back if they make it back.

I actually really love this idea! I guess the "no cruel or unusual punishment" counts only for prisioners, who seem (sadly) to be treated better than our soldiers!

I worry about him, he's skated on SOOOO many charges going as far back as we can see his adult record, we have no clue what his juvi record looks like and I remember AS saying how he threatened to kill a man in a traffic dispute when he was only 17 or 18 IIRC. I just want everyone to be treated as Hope, but IF Tommy had no part in it and only knew what happened and is willing to tell all, and help LE find corrobarating evidence, I'd be ok with him serving less time because it will bring a family some measure of peace and closure and because HaLeigh deserves some dignity and justice.

I guess how you feel about her sentence depends on the way you look at the purpose of the legal consequences for a crime.  Is a prison term intended to teach the offender a lesson, to punish the offender, or to keep the offender off the street.

In Hope's case, it is at least two of the three.  Whether or not she learns anything is not a sure thing.  However, by incarcerating her, at least she will be removed from the "crowd" in which she learned the drug behavior.  That in itself maybe a saving grace for her.  If she is never removed from the environment, whether or her own volition or through incarceration, she will never be able to break the drug users mentality.

Some people plead for probation, but it is almost never successful because they don't have the willpower or family support to get themselves away from those people/situations that will take them back to the same old habits.

In jail, she may (hopefully) get drug counseling and job training.  With those things she can learn that life does not have to revolve around using illegal drugs and doing criminal activities.

Twelve years is a long time, but it is not clear that even twelve years can undo the past 18 of her life. :
