Thanks Deenie.

Wow, 15 years.  How long would she actually have to serve?

And now we know Ron was in the courtroom but did not testify.

Not sure how it works in FL, but here she would only serve about half that time.. 7 1/2 years.  One day counts for two, for good behavior.  Something like that.

Thank-you.  She also faces $250,000 in fines.  How in the world is she going to pay that fine?

iirc, she only had 1 count for trafficking, but had some others for drug use, don't know if those got lumped in or not.

that jail house phone call with her mother came back to bite her big time.

Thanks OS~I did read where the called showed she had no remorse, I sure as he77 hope the rest of them get their due sentences and not freaking plea deal, the only plea deal I would even consider if I was the PCSO would include full disclosure of everything that happened to Haleigh, and by whom, who covered up, and where is she now. Anything else, they can rot in prison AFAIK

On February 11, 2009, Ronald Cummings didn't have his story straight:

GRACE: So sometime between 11:00 PM and 3:30 AM, Haleigh goes missing. Now, did she (Misty) call 911?
CUMMINGS: No, she did not, not until after I was there. She tried to call me, but I was pulling in the driveway. So I asked her how come she was trying to call me, she needed to call 911. So she immediately called them then.
Transcript, Nancy Grace; February 11, 2009;
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0902/11/ng.01.html

RONALD CUMMINGS: Yes. I never walked through the door. I pulled in the yard. She -- the door was open. She was standing there and waiting on me. I asked her what she was still doing up, and she then told me that the back -- she got up to use the restroom, and the back door was wide open and that my daughter was missing.
Transcript, On the Record with Greta van Sustern, February 11, 2009;
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,491368,00.html

Um, Ronald?  Why would you ask Misty what she was doing up when she'd already called you on the phone and you told her to call 911?

It sure did.

I remember she told her mom she lied to the judge when asked if she worked. (She had recently gotten a job as a stripper.)

That probably didn't help much.

I sure hope so, Love2Read!!  Am thinking tho that she will need to get completely away from that area and her regular peeps, if she has a prayer of making it.

This is a good indication that she wants to become a better person:

http://www.gainesville.com/article/20100427/ARTICLES/100429468?Title=Cummings-cousin-gets-15-years-for-trafficking

<snip>

She told the judge she wanted to get a GED, go to college and become a physical therapist.

"I let drugs control my life," Sykes said. "I let my family down. I know I messed up. I want help. I don't want to live this life no more."

Here's hoping that she can keep this in mind and work hard toward that.  She can start now by getting her GED and further education while in prison.  After that it will be up to her what direction her life takes.  Some are serious, but stay with their same old friends when they get out, and that is very often their downfall.  No matter how determined they are.

Cousin of Haleigh Cummings' father sentenced to 15 years on drug trafficking charge
She pleaded no contest in case; judge said she was not qualified for youthful offender consideration
Posted: April 27, 2010 - 11:06am By Dana Treen

The only person to plead no contest to drug trafficking in a case involving the family of missing Haleigh Cummings was sentenced to 15 years in prison this morning.

Hope Sykes was 18 when she was arrested in January on a charge of trafficking after she, her cousin Ronald Cummings and Misty Croslin were recorded selling 25 hydrocodone pills in an undercover officer's car.

Sykes had been out of jail less than two weeks on a possession charge when she was arrested in the trafficking case, which Circuit Judge Terry LaRue said disqualified her for youthful offender consideration that would have meant a much shorter sentence.

Family members gasped and Sykes was clearly shaken at the sentence imposed after an hour of testimony on her behalf by her family and others.

Cummings was in the courtroom as a defense witness but not called. His daughter disappeared in February 2009 and has not been found. Croslin was in the mobile home the night of the disappearance and called 911.

This morning, LaRue said the youthful offender statute is for young people who are pressured or led astray by peers.

"That's not the case here," he said. He said the second charge was not a simple possession charge.

"What she did was engage in trafficking," he said.

A one point during the hearing, the prosecutor played a tape of an angry and unremorseful Sykes telling her mother, "if they think I am bad now wait until I get out."

She was also fined $250,000.

Florida Dept Of Corrections:

"Those sentenced to prison in Florida who committed their crimes on or after October 1, 1995 will serve a minimum of 85% of their sentences. This applies to all inmates, regardless of the type of crime they committed. On December 31, 2005, more than three-quarters (80.2%) of all inmates in prison had been sentenced under the 85% law. This percentage represents only those inmates who have every component of their sentence covered by the 85% law. When calculating how much time an inmate will serve in prison you must first calculate 85% of his or her sentence, and then subtract any county jail time already served."

85 percent minimum!!!!!! Damn, they ain't playing.

chin on the ground, chin on the ground, mouth turned sideways, tongue hanging out, laughing on the inside, still thinking much more comin' for the others.  poor Hope, she just got made an example of.  that, or she's gonna get a deal if she plead no contest, cause that sure sounds like a lot of time for the crime
