Chile (Reuters) - Police set up checkpoints in northern Chile on Thursday looking for a Dutch man arrested twice over the disappearance of a U.S. student in Aruba in 2005 and now the prime suspect in a new murder probe in Peru.

Joran Van der Sloot was questioned after Natalee Holloway disappeared during a high school graduation trip in the Dutch Caribbean island five years ago, a case that attracted heavy media attention in the United States. He was not charged due to insufficient evidence.

Now he is wanted in Peru in the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores, a Peruvian woman found dead in a Lima hotel room Monday. He crossed into neighboring Chile the same day.

Police in Chile believe he is still in the country.

Douglas Rodriguez, head of Chile's investigative police branch in Arica, said northern border checkpoints had been beefed up. "We are checking 100 percent of the vehicles leaving the region," Rodriguez said in a telephone interview.

But with just two main checkpoints along more than 250 miles of rugged border area, police may struggle to find him, he said.

Police were also checking hotels, guest-houses, restaurants and casinos.

A person's days are numbered. It is simply a metter of time.

Joran is no exception. Additionally, I think he is too much of a coward to kill himself.

The Dutchman who has long been under suspicion in the 2005 disappearance of American Natalee Holloway, is now being hotly pursued by authorities in South America, after police in Peru declared him the prime suspect in the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores.

Flores' body was found Sunday in a Lima hotel room registered in van der Sloot's name, authorities said. Van der Sloot has since fled to Chile, according to officials there.

Here are five things you should know about Joran van der Sloot and the trouble that's trailing him:

         1. van der Sloot's father, Paulus, was a prominent judge on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba, where    Natalee Holloway disappeared. Paulus van der Sloot died of a heart attack at 57 in February, 2010, while playing tennis.

         2. van der sloot, who's 22, was arrested twice but later released for lack of evidence in the Holloway disappearance, although he is still considered the prime suspect. She was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot on the final night of a high school trip.

         3. van der Sloot confessed on several occasions to disposing of Holloway's body in Aruba. But prosecutors in Aruba have said his statements were "not credible," and in one case "held together by lies and fantasy."

         4. van der Sloot was in Peru for a poker tournament, according to Peruvian police.

         5. The father of Stephany Flores, Ricardo Flores, has been a racecar driver and political candidate in Peru.

Also -- the alleged murder of Stephany Flores in Lima occurred May 30, 2010, exactly five years to the day since Natalee Holloway disappeared.

Joran van der Sloot's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, said his client "has been falsely accused of murder once before. The fact is he wears a bull's-eye on his back now and he is a quote-unquote 'usual suspect' when it comes to allegations of foul play."

(June 3) -- The cousin of the young woman found dead in a bloody Peru hotel room rented by the one-time suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway said today he had spoken with his cousin about Joran van der Sloot about a month ago.

"She had seen a special about the crime that he committed, or allegedly committed, five years ago. And she was shocked by it," Rafael Vertiz said of his slain cousin, 21-year-old Stephany Tatiana Flores Ramirez, on NBC's "Today" show this morning.

Police in Peru say Flores Ramirez was likely killed on Sunday, May 30, exactly five years to the day after Alabama teen Natalee Holloway went missing outside a nightclub in Aruba. Van der Sloot is now a main suspect in Flores Ramirez's death.

The Dutchman was arrested and released twice in connection with the 2005 disappearance of Holloway, a case that captivated American media for months.

Vertiz said it was "unbelievable that this was happening to our family with the same person."

Flores Ramirez and van der Sloot were seen together on videotape outside a casino in Lima, Peru. Police believe van der Sloot has fled to Chile, and are working to obtain an international warrant for his arrest. Vertiz said the family is in mourning.

"We were destroyed by it. She was a little cousin. She was full of life. It's hard to believe," he said.

Vertiz said today that his family believes van der Sloot is responsible for his cousin's death. "We don't think anybody else could have done this," he said.

I think it makes sense that Killem and Den Scoot is heading as fast as he can to Suriname to confess to the murder of Natalee Holloway. It would be a great deal more pleasant serving time in an Aruban/Dutch prison than it would be in Peru where the conditions are horrific in comparison. If he reaches Suriname I can imagine he will be extradited to his homeland expeditiously. Of course he could always fall on his sword and save us all the trouble, we can but hope. After serving a short time in an Aruba/Dutch prison he would probably be released and I don't see the Aruban/Dutch authorities making much of a move to authorize extradition to Chile.

I hope they catch him before he gets to a place of sanctuary and send him post haste right back to Chile where he will suffer for the rest of his miserable life.

The sub-prefect Oyarzún stated that if he stopped, the young Dutchman will not be stopped, since no country has come to our arrest warrant.

"If found, it will only control abroad, you can withdraw your identifying documents, then it will take a written statement and left subject to signature in our unit. Truer words never spoken - also did anyone else catch Taco on Foxnews earlier this morning?   Apparently he reads because he altered his ongoing defense of Joran by stating that he had not seen him in about 4 1/2 years, talked to him about 6 months ago & to semi-quote him "he's not the same man I knew."    Taco went on to say that people should wait for all the results to come back before jumping to conclusions.   He spoke briefly about how Joran would tell different versions of what happened to Natalee for money but that doesnt make him a murder, a serial killer as some have said....well Taco face it, your client IS a serial killer, sleep on that fact!

It would not surprise me at all if there are other murders this monster committed, maybe a few girls working the streets & may not necessarily have had family ties that would have identified them easily or link him to their murders.   While it is my strong belief that he did this 5 years to the day was premeditated, I dont think he went 5 years without committing the same heinous act.    I've often wondered why this punk @$$ sociopath traveled the globe to the extent he has, something is just not adding up.

Joran van der Sloot would have killed to Stephany Flores

According to authorities the girl was hit several times in the head and body until he was unconscious.

According to investigations by the Homicide Division, at a time between 4 am and 8:20 a.m. Sunday May 30, Stephany and Joran heavily discussed within the hotel room of unknown causes, which would have unleashed the fury of the Dutchman who beat her to death.

Minutes after the murder, Joran van der Sloot left the hotel with a suitcase and a backpack, got into the car of his victim and left the area.

The autopsy examination showed cervical blunt cranial trauma. Besides the girl had severe injuries in various body parts

I hate to bring this up, but I remember all of us expecting soooo much in those early days of June 2005, and being amazed that we reached and astonishing 100 threads (50 pages each) without a resolution...

So far, Joran has been one of those people with the wind always at his back.

Meanwhile - June 1 came and went without 2K showing up for depositions. What's up with that? klaas - any developments?
