Just as Bret Michaels' health appeared to be returning back to normal, things have taken a turn for the worse.

The former Poison frontman, 47, was rushed to an undisclosed hospital late Thursday night for an excruciating headache that turned out to be a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage, or bleeding at the base of his brain stem, People.com reports.

Michaels, who is a diabetic, is said to be in critical condition.

"After several CAT scans, MRIs and an angiogram, [doctors] decided to keep Michaels in the ICU and are running several tests to determine the cause," a source said. "[It] will be touch and go for the next few days while he is under intense observation."

A rep for the rocker confirmed the report to the Daily News, adding, "We will have no additional information until further testing is done."

Michaels' hospitalization follows an emergency appendectomy on April 12. He was due to perform a show in San Antonio, Texas when what was believed to be a severe stomach flu was really an acute appendicitis.

Following the appendectomy, the rocker was transferred to a private care facility that specializes in the rehabilitation of diabetic patients.

Michaels, who currently stars on this season's "Celebrity Apprentice," took to his blog over the weekend to keep his fans updated on his recovery.

"They told me that if I had gone on stage like I wanted to, [my appendix] likely would have ruptured and I could have died," he wrote on April 17. "As I write this, I'm feeling pretty bad … to tell you the truth.

Donald Trump, the host of NBC's "Apprentice" franchise, said in a statement, "I am deeply saddened to hear about Bret Michaels. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time. He's a great competitor and champion and I hope he will be fine."

All but the finale of the current "Apprentice" season has been shot. The finale, a live event where Trump selects a winner, is set for May 23.

As of now, Michaels is expected to be in the taped part of the competition for at least a couple more weeks.

There has been no word as to whether or not Michaels' current condition is related to his recent appendectomy, or to his diabetes.

Bret Michaels of Poison stabilized after brain hemorrhage

April 24, 2010
Poison lead singer Bret Michaels, who was rushed to the hospital in critical condition last night after suffering a brain hemorrhage, is now “stabilized and conscious” according to one of the participants from his reality television show “Rock Of Love” who is with him at the hospital.

The forty-seven year old Michaels had an emergency appendectomy the previous week after not feeling well prior to a scheduled concert. It’s unclear whether the two are related. Cerebral hemorrhages involve internal bleeding within the brain

Bret Michaels health update: Bret Michaels remains in critical condition from brain hemorrhage (video) http://health-beauty-2468.blogspot.com/2010/04/bret-michaels-health-update-bret_24.html
Bret Michaels remains in critical condition after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage on Thursday, April 22, 2010. Earlier today previous reports surfaced that Bret’s condition had stabilized. An update was posted on Bret Michael’s website saying that even reports made by his own father, Wally Sychak, were inaccurate.
According to Bret Michaels’ publicist, Joann Mignano, Bret remains in critical condition and his condition is being closely monitored.

The type of brain hemorrhage that Bret Michaels suffered is extremely dangerous. It is not an understatement to say that Bret is in a life and death situation. Health care workers are monitoring his condition and will observe him carefully for the next 24-48 hours.

Bret Michaels is 47 years old and underwent an emergency appendectomy on April 11, 2010. He was recovering from the surgery and had reported on his website that he wasn’t feeling completely better just one day prior to suffering the brain hemorrhage.

Reports state that late Thursday evening, Bret developed what is known as a ‘thunderclap’ headache. These headaches are sometimes triggered by a pop or snap that occurs in the base of the brain stem. Bleeding starts and the patient can become paralyzed, suffer permanent brain damage, or ultimately die.
It is unclear what triggered Bret Michaels’ brain hemorrhage as he is Diabetic, was recovering from the appendectomy, and suffered a head injury in November of 2009.

How very sad.
Nut,I miss those good times too.

Bret Michaels' speech slurred after brain hemorrhage
Reuters - April 25, 2010 8:08 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock singer and TV reality star Bret Michaels  remained in critical condition, but was conscious and talking with slurred speech after suffering a brain hemorrhage, his publicist said on Sunday.

The front man of glam rock band Poison was rushed to an undisclosed hospital on Friday with a severe headache. Doctors diagnosed a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage, or bleeding at the base of his brain stem.

A statement issued on Sunday by publicists for the 47-year-old singer said he was still under 24-hour supervision and in critical condition and that doctors were trying to locate the source of the bleeding.

"Bret is a fighter and we are hopeful that once all is complete, the slurred speech, blurred vision and dizziness etc will be eliminated and all functions will return to normal," the statement added.

Michaels rose to fame in the 1980s at the helm of Poison, whose hits included the ballad "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."

He was diagnosed with diabetes as a child and just last week disclosed he had an emergency appendectomy earlier this month. In a blog entry, he called it a "wake-up call to be a little bit more diligent on keeping control of my health."

In recent years, Michaels found fame as a reality TV star in such shows as VH1's dating contest "Rock of Love" and on the current season of "The Celebrity Apprentice."
His latest album "Custom Built" is due to be released later this year and he recently recorded a song with Disney starlet Miley Cyrus.

On "The Celebrity Apprentice," which was filmed several months ago but is about halfway through its broadcast run on NBC, Michaels has raised $100,000 for his charity, the American Diabetes Association, and is a strong contender to win.

I never was a fan of Poison even though it was my era of bands - I found Mr. Bret on Rock of Love .. and I am not one to follow reality TV either. But something about Bret * himself - nothing to due with the show itself. Not the crazy antics of the women etc. Was Bret that captured my attention. Would I ever want to Date him? NO. But I find within him this quality of heart and care like one would feel for a Brother.  His music is filled with Americana to date and He loves his life - of music. He loves his fans.
He has this gentle quality within him as a being ( regardless of his stardom) .. and He is a Daddy of two little girls ... who need him as their Daddy. Not a Rock Star.

I pray that he will come out of this and he will be able to live many more years to come.

Source: Bret Michaels Felt Like He'd Been 'Hit with a Baseball Bat'
By Michelle Tauber and Anne Marie Cruz
Monday April 26, 2010 06:05 AM EDT
As Bret Michaels continues to be watched closely by his doctors, a source reveals the rocker's excruciating moments before he was taken to the emergency room.

According to the source, Michaels, 47, said the headache that prompted him to call for an ambulance felt "like [getting] hit in the head with a baseball bat over and over again."

Often referred to by doctors as a "thunderclap headache" because of the intensity and suddenness of the pain, such headaches are a tell-tale symptom of the kind of brain hemorrhage that Michaels suffered.

The source close to the situation adds, "Bret is still in ICU. He still has the headache and is heavily sedated."
A statement on his fan site noted that doctors are still searching for the source of the bleeding.

"In some patients, doctors never find the source," says Dr. Keith Siller of New York University's Comprehensive Stroke Care Center. The bleeding could be very small, or the rupture itself can "cure" the source of the problem, says Dr. Siller.

If no source of an aneurysm or an abnormal vein-artery connection known as an AVM is found, "you basically just wait for the symptoms to go away," says Dr. Siller. The patient typically remains under close observation, as Michaels is, so doctors can monitor for possible complications.

But if the patient is able to speak, "they're on the better end of things," says Dr. Siller, noting that physical therapy and speech therapy are often required to make a full recovery.

On TV's Celebrity Apprentice, on which Michaels is a participant, Sunday night's episode carried a post-script. Accompanying slow-motion footage of Bret carrying luggage across a tarmac, a voiceover said, "Everyone here at NBC wishes Bret Michaels a speedy recovery."

Bret Michaels Raises $100,000 for Diabetes

Let’s hear it for Bret Michaels! He is competing in the Celebrity Apprentice and last night was the project manager who happened to win the very first challenge. He’s been a Type 1 diabetic for 40 years, so he is playing for the American Diabetes Association as his charity. Naturally, I rooted for him the entire night, and really want him to win it all! But I couldn’t suppress my joy at last night’s result: he won $100,000 for us! Yay Bret!During the challenge, he admitted that he had only one hour of sleep. (Not good, Bret!) He also had a low blood sugar incident while running around during the challenge. Luckily, he had ready access to some sugar soda, but he had to stop what he was doing for a few minutes and get his blood sugar back into normal range. I hope this doesn’t hurt him going forward with the challenges, and I’ll really be pissed if his teammates (or anyone else) hold it against him.
But I can’t tell you how happy I am to have Bret doing this and bringing awareness to diabetes. He’s got my vote to win. How about you?

Doctors say it is unlikely that Bret Michaels' emergency appendectomy led to brain hemorrhage
By Rosemary Black

DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

It is unlikely that Bret Michaels' emergency appendectomy caused his brain hemorrhage.

Two weeks before the "Celebrity Apprentice" star suffered a massive brain hemorrhage that has kept him in critical condition, he had an emergency appendectomy.

Doctors have hit out at speculations that this may have caused the bleed in the base of the Poison singer's brain stem.

"It is highly uncommon for a prior surgery to produce a brain hemorrhage," said Dr. Ezriel Kornel, a neurosurgeon and member of the board of directors for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

But if Michaels had developed a post-op blood clot in the leg and been put on a blood thinner, this could have contributed to a spontaneous brain hemorrhage, Kornel says.

The most common reason for brain hemorrhage is high blood pressure, said Dr.Rafael Ortiz, a stroke specialist at St. Luke's Hospital.

In a patient with high blood pressure who might have stopped the medication for surgery, it could possibly increase the risk of a brain bleed.

"But otherwise, it might just be a coincidence," he said.

Being in terrible pain during or after surgery could increase a patient's blood pressure, said Dr. Svetlana Kogan, founder of Doctors at Trump Place.

"Bret Michaels has diabetes, which means that the healing process from the surgery will take much longer," she explains.

However, brain hemorrhage generally has a poor prognosis, said Dr. Brian Silver, a stroke neurologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. About 40% of patients with a brain hemorrhage die within the first three months, he said.

"In terms of survivors, probably half will have a residual disability," he said. "Only between 10 and 20% make a good recovery."

Bret Michaels' Father Has Spoken to His Son
The Rocker's Father Tells Extra That His Speech Is "Slow, But Fine" After His Hospitalization for a Brain Hemorrhage
CBS/AP)   Rocker Bret Michaels' father says his son, being hospitalized in Arizona for a brain hemorrhage, has spoken to him on the phone.

"Extra" spoke with the former Poison frontman's father, Wally Sychak, at his home in Pennsylvania. Sychak said the ailing "Celebrity Apprentice" contestant is improving.

"Well, the fact that he was talking to me, and giving me information, I thought that was great. I understood that this was a terrible ordeal that he was going through. We're not getting information right now. I guess no news is good news," Sychak said.
When talking to his son on the phone, he said, "He sounded a little slow, but fine. He was talking, not as cheerful as he usually is. But I guess he is under sedation. But he understood what he was saying and knew me. Everything seemed good that way."

He also said Michaels is starting to move his limbs again.

"They say he's moving his arms and hands. The best as they could expect at this time," his father told Extra.

Tests suggest setback for Bret Michaels
By Alan Duke, CNN
April 27, 2010 9:27 p.m. EDT
CNN) -- Medical tests show Bret Michaels has suffered a setback in his recovery from a brain hemorrhage, according to a statement posted on his official website Tuesday.

Despite the development, "doctors remain hopeful for a full recovery," the statement said.

The rock singer and reality TV star suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and was hospitalized Friday.

"Doctors state Michaels is very lucky as his condition could have been fatal," it said.

"Test results indicate a setback in Bret Michaels' condition, a side effect from the brain hemorrhage called hyponatremia, a lack of sodium in the body which leads to seizures," said the statement posted by road manager Janna Elias.

Michaels "is responding well to tests and treatments," she said.

"Even though today was a minor setback Doctors remain hopeful for a full recovery and plan to release more specific information next Monday."
Michaels, 47, was the lead singer for the '80s glam-metal "hair band" Poison. He became a reality star on the VH1 show "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels." He has also appeared on "Celebrity Apprentice."
His manager and publicist have been careful not to disclose the hospital or even the city where the singer is being treated. They cite security reasons for the secrecy.

Tuesday's statement offers the greatest detail so far about Michaels' condition and treatment.

"Michaels' medical workup demonstrated findings of a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of stroke that causes bleeding in the fluid-filled spaces around the base of the brain," the statement said. "It presents itself suddenly as the sound of a loud gunshot or thunderclap at the back of the head causing severe cranial pain and muscle spasms."

Michaels, who is in critical condition in an intensive care unit, has undergone a continuous series of tests "including angiograms, CT scans, MRIs and transcranial dopplers (TCDs)," the statement said. "With further testing and rehabilitation, they are hopeful that Bret will gradually improve as the blood surrounding the brain dissolves and is reabsorbed into his system, which can be a very painful recovery and take several weeks to months," it said.

The latest statement also addressed possible causes of Michaels' brain hemorrhage.
"Many people are speculating Michaels' head injury suffered from a prop striking the singer at the Tony awards last June is the cause," it said. "Additional studies are planned throughout the week to hopefully detect the exact cause of the rupture."

Michaels, who is a lifelong Type 1 diabetic, had an emergency appendectomy just 11 days before falling ill last week.

this sounds exactly what happened to my neighbor..He was/is a physician...had this bleed..started having seizures...He is doing well now but it was a long hard recovery...he could not drive until recently, of course could no longer do surgery..in fact,  he hasn't worked at all that I know of since this happened..he is young too! but the main thing is that there is recovery from this... a lot of physical therapy and medical treatment...

Bret Michaels Upgraded to Stable Condition, May Perform by End of May
Bryan Wawzenek
04.29.2010

According to a statement from Bret Michaels’ website the former Poison frontman has been upgraded from critical to stable condition.
That’s great news for the 47-year-old rocker and current star of Celebrity Apprentice. Last week, Michaels suffered a brain hemorrhage following an April 12 emergency appendectomy. Although doctors have yet to determine the cause of the hemorrhage, Michaels is responding well to tests and treatment, the statement says. More information is expected on May 3.

In the meantime, Michaels’ staff is rescheduling performance dates from the present until May 21. However, the plan is that he’ll be back on the road for a May 26 gig in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Barring complications or setbacks, that means all of Michaels’ summer shows – including a tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd – will happen as planned.

As for the rescheduled dates, the statement said that fans should hold onto their tickets until the new dates have been announced.

Bret Michaels is one of People’s 50 Most Beautiful People

April 30, 2010
Bret Michaels is having a terrible week which we can only hope improves for him, but one bit of superficial good news has come his way as he’s been named one of People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” in the publication’s current issue. Michaels, who is still recovering in the hospital ICU from a brain hemorrhage, was chosen for the designation before his current medical issues began, as evidenced by the fact that he was photographed for the honorific issue three days before hemorrhage, according to the singer’s official website. While the title may come as some solace to those who’ve been waiting for more official details to emerge about Michaels’ condition, the next opportunity for good news of substance will come on Tuesday when his doctors are scheduled to hold a press conference about his condition.

In the People issue, Bret Michaels is listed as a “Reality Rocker” and is pictured on the same page as funnyman Russell Brand, olympic star Shaun White, and perhaps not coincidentally, Slash from the band Guns N’ Roses; Michaels’ band Poison had its heyday during the same period of time.

Bret Michaels Remains In ICU
by Staff
U.S. rocker and reality television personality  Bret Michaels remains hospitalized in Arizona a week after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

Michaels, 47, is best known as the front man for the band Poison. He is also a contestant on the current season of TV's "The Celebrity Apprentice." He was hospitalized last Thursday after complaining of a tremendous headache.

"We thank you for your continued support and well wishes," said a message posted on his Facebook page Thursday.

"Bret remains in critical condition in ICU under 24-hour supervision by doctors and medical staff. If a patient survives the initial rupture, the first 7 to 10 days after are the most critical as an additional rupture or other complications may arise," the posting continued. "Doctors are also continuing to treat Bret for the hyponatremia (which is described as a lack of sodium in the body that leads to seizures) and today he will be undergoing more testing. … There will be a press conference on Tuesday at which doctors who have been treating Bret will further explain his condition, treatment and prognosis. Location and time of the press conference will be released Friday." (c) UPI

Doctor: 'Sheer will' saved Bret Michaels
By Alan Duke, CNN
April 30, 2010 10:00 p.m. EDT
(CNN) -- Bret Michaels' "sheer will to live" kept him alive long enough last week to allow doctors to stabilize his condition after he suffered a massive brain hemorrhage, his neurosurgeon said Friday.

The rock singer and reality TV star was in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, a week after he suffered the rupture.

His sister Michael Sychak told HLN's "Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell" that Michaels was watching television at his home near Phoenix when he was stricken by an excruciating headache on the evening of April 22.

"Bret's fight to stay conscious during the hemorrhage and get to the emergency room" was key to saving his life that night, said Dr. Joseph Zabramski, the head of the medical team treating Michaels.

"He has an unbelievable fight in him and told me what kept him alive at the moment of the hemorrhage was that he 'did not want his family to wake up and see him lying unconscious in the middle of the floor,' " Zabramski said.

His recovery is complicated by "a few roadblocks," he said.
Michaels has hyponatremia, a lack of sodium in the body, which leads to seizures. He also suffers severe cranial and back pain from blood drainage, he said.

An emergency appendectomy 11 days before the rupture, and his lifelong history of Type 1 diabetes are also factors slowing the recovery, he said.

"Bret's sheer will to live and fully recover is undeniable," the doctor said.

Zabramski and his team will talk more about Michaels' illness and recovery at a news conference at the hospital on Tuesday.

Michaels is able to talk, his sister said.

"He sounded good -- as good as you can when your brain's throbbing," she said.

A statement published on Michaels' official website earlier in the week said his band might resume its concert tour as soon as May 26 "provided there are no further complications."

Michaels, 47, was the lead singer for the '80s glam-metal "hair band" Poison. He became a reality star on the VH1 show "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels." He has also appeared on "Celebrity Apprentice."

Poison lead singer Bret Michaels is starting to walk a little but still has back pain following his brain hemorrhage last month, his sister said Monday, according to Radar Online.

Radar said Michaels’ sister Michelle called The Todd N Tyler Radio Empire, based in Omaha, Neb., Monday morning with an update on her brother, saying “he’s up and moving but it is not going to surprise me if he is still in the ICU on Friday. I think they’re having a problem really getting the bleed…I think there are some issues…that’s why the back pain.”

She said he was no longer slurring his speech but she could tell from his voice that he was in pain.

Radar reported Michaels was now in critical but stable condition and that doctors at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona would hold a news conference with his medical team Tuesday to update his condition, treatment and prognosis.
