CHARLESTON -- The Kanawha County Sheriff Department needs your help in the search for a missing woman.
Kathy Goble of Charleston was last seen leaving Kelly's Mens Shop in Charleston on Sat., April 24, at 5 p.m.

Deputies said Goble may have gone to the Watt's Hill area of Charleston and then possibly to Kenna Drive in South Charleston.

Her car, a silver 2004 Honda Pilot, was found on Interstate 64 near the Crooked Creek exit in Putnam County on Monday evening. The investigation has revealed the car was parked in that location as early as 7 p.m. Sunday evening.

Goble’s family believe her disappearance to be totally out of character.

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department asks if you have any information to call 304-357-0169.

Search continues for missing Charleston woman
April 28, 2010

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The search continues for a Charleston woman who hasn't been seen since the weekend.

With still no sign of Kathy Goble, 62, of Hillcrest Drive, who was last seen on Saturday, friends and family are making plans to hold a candlelight vigil to pray for her safe return.

The vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Kelley's Men's Shop, where Goble worked for 10 years.

Meanwhile, investigators with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department continue to search for clues.

Lt. Sean Crosier said members of the West Virginia K-9 Search and Rescue team were headed to Putnam County Wednesday evening to search for Goble.
A co-worker found Goble's Honda Pilot along the side of Interstate 64 west near the Crooked Creek exit with a white towel hanging from the window. Search crews were going to conduct an "extended search" of the area, Crosier said.

Crosier said investigators also have recovered surveillance video footage of Goble at the South Charleston Walmart from Saturday night. The footage shows Goble purchasing items and leaving the store on her own. The items purchased at the store were found at the same South Charleston home her cell phone was found in, Crosier said. The home on Kenna Drive is a friend's, he said.

The earliest known sighting of Goble's vehicle on the interstate was about 9:45 a.m. Sunday, officers said.

Crosier said the department has used all of its resources and have called in additional resources, including polygraph testing and forensic analyses, on the case.

"We're still very concerned as time goes on," he said. "We're trying to remain hopeful that she's in good condition and that we'll be able to bring her home to her family."

Deputies urge those with information to contact Detective B.K. Carper by e-mail at b.k.car...@kcso.us or phone at 304-357-0169.

Dogs joins search for missing city woman
Kenna Drive resident's car found abandoned along I-64W

Chip Ellis
Steve Shanklin and his partner, Harley, of the West Virginia K-9 Search and Rescue team, searched a wooded area near Crooked Creek Wednesday. Investigators hoped to find clues in the disappearance of Sheila "Kathy" Goble, who was last seen on Saturday. Her car was found on Interstate 64 near the Crooked Creek exit.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A volunteer K-9 search and rescue team has been brought in to help police find a missing Charleston woman who was last seen leaving work Saturday.

The West Virginia K-9 Search and Rescue team started their first search for Shelia "Kathy" Goble, 62, around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Goble was last seen leaving Kelly's Men's Shop in Charleston just after 5 p.m. Saturday. Her car was later found abandoned at the 42-mile marker on Interstate 64 West, two miles away from the Crooked Creek exit in Putnam County.

The K-9 team, an all volunteer organization dedicated to providing trained dog teams to assist in locating lost and missing persons, searched the wooded area near where Goble's car was found abandoned. A co-worker found the car Monday.

Deputies said the 2004 Honda Pilot had been sitting on the side of the road since at least noon Sunday.

Deputies are looking for any clues into the woman's disappearance, which friends, family and co-workers have called uncharacteristic.

Goble had placed a white towel in her driver's side window, which usually signals a broken-down car. However, Kanawha County Sheriff's Department Lt. Sean Crosier said deputies couldn't find any obvious mechanical problems with the vehicle.

"It's an odd place to leave a vehicle, particularly one that appears to be running fine," Crosier said. "We knew as soon as she was reported missing that it could be very serious."

Crosier said the white towel in the driver's side window "raises a red flag to us, especially when there is no logical or mechanical reason to leave your car there," or put the towel in the window, unless it was to alert police.

A forensic investigation is being done on Goble's car with the hope of finding trace evidence that links to her disappearance, Crosier said. Deputies will look for anything from fingerprints to footprints in the car or any documentation that can pinpoint her whereabouts before she went missing.
It's safe to say we suspect she may very well have been taken against her will," Crosier said.

So far, police have searched two homes in connection to Goble's disappearance.

On the night that Goble was last seen, she went to Wal-Mart and purchased some items before heading to a home on Kenna Drive in South Charleston and dropping the items off there, Crosier said.

According to Crosier, Goble was at the residence around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and that is the last time police have a record of anyone seeing her.

Police have found no history of mental illness or anything suspicious in her personal background.

In addition to searching the wooded area near where the car was found, Crosier said the K-9 team might search Kenna Drive for signs of
Goble, because "that is the last place she was seen."

As for now, it's just a waiting game.

"We have four detectives out searching for evidence," Crosier said.

Deputies are asking anyone in the Kenna Drive area who might have seen something suspicious Saturday night to call the Sheriff's Department, at 304-357-0169.

Chip Ellis
Jeff Cunningham (left), of the West Virginia K-9 Search and Rescue team, discussed Wednesday's search for Sheila "Kathy" Goble with Detective Brian Carper of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. With the help of the K-9 unit, police searched the Crooked Creek area after Goble's car was found abandoned nearby.

Search Dogs Find no Leads in Search for Missing Charleston Woman
Posted 4/28/10, Updated 4/29/10
TEAYS VALLEY  -- The search continues for a 62-year-old Charleston woman who has been missing since Saturday.

Dogs trained to detect human scent as well as cadaver dogs from West Virginia K-9 Search and Rescue scoured the side of the road along I-64 in Putnam County where Kathy Goble's vehicle was found Monday evening.

The dogs did not detect anything.

Police say the longer the search goes on it become less likely there will be a positive outcome.

But Goble's family is clinging to hope.

"Her family can't sleep, they can't eat," said William Herrald, a friend of the family. "It is impossible for them to do anything but worry and wonder where their mother is."

Kathy Goble's employer, Kelley's Men's Shop, is planning a candlelight vigil for this Friday at 6 pm in the store's parking lot.

If you have any information regarding Goble's whereabouts you are asked to call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department at 304-357-0169.

Search Continues for Missing Woman; Friends Hold onto Hope and Faith
Nearly a week has gone by since Kathy Goble was last spotted. Investigators say Goble, who is from Charleston, seems to have just vanished. They have few clues, but her family and friends are still holding onto hope that she will be found.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Nearly a week has gone by since Kathy Goble was last spotted. Investigators say Goble, who is from Charleston, seems to have just vanished. They have few clues, but her family and friends are still holding onto hope that she will be found.

Loved ones, feeling lost themselves, joined together in Charleston Friday night to keep the spotlight on her disappearance.

"It's been terrible," coworker Kristi Waldeck says. "We've all just been racking our brain trying to come up with information that might help police."

Goble was last seen on Saturday. Detective Sean Snuffer with the Kanawha County's Sheriff department says she was seen on surveillance cameras at the Southridge Walmart on Saturday. She also was spotted at Kenna Homes. But since then, he says it's like she vanished.

Goble's car was found alongside Interstate 64 near Winfield in Putnam County on Monday by a coworker. Investigators say there is no reason she would have been in that area, and search dogs didn't find any clues there.

There also has been no activity on any of her bank accounts. Investigators are interviewing friends and family and following tips that they have received.

Kathy's friends say not knowing is the hardest part, but they are not giving up hope.

"Whether she was abducted and can get away and get home safely or if she just went off on her own, we still don't know," family friend Billy Herrald says. "So we just hope and pray."

And they join together. Dozens of people gathered outside of Kelley's Men's Shop Friday night. Goble worked at the store for 10 years.

"She was a jubilant person," Virginia Wright says. "We always would laugh when I came into the store."

When Goble didn't show up to work on Monday, her coworkers -- who are like family -- knew something was wrong.

Since then, the store has been ground zero in the fight to find Kathy.

"I hope everyone who saw this, saw how much she's missed and loved by all her family and friends," Waldeck says. "We just really hope if anyone has any information they'll come forward."

If you have any information that could help police find Goble, you are asked to call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department at 304-357-0169.

Agonizing Days For Missing Woman's Sons
April 30, 2010

The waiting has been agonizing for the two sons of missing Charleston woman Kathy Goble.

"They're really having a difficult time and I think everyone is, with just not knowing what has happened," family spokesman Bill Harold said. "No one knows where she is."

The 62-year-old Goble was last seen Saturday, April 24. Her co-workers and family became concerned when she didn't show up for work at Kelly's Mens Shop in Charleston the following Monday. Her abandoned car was found alongside Interstate 64 in Putnam County.

"We've all been trying to stay busy so your mind doesn't keep wandering and racing ," Harold said who grew up with Goble's oldest son Jason. "But there is that idle time, which is the most difficult time."

Harold says Goble became a second mother to him when he was growing up. He says his friend Jason and Goble's other son Paul are having a difficult time dealing with the different scenarios of what could have happened to their mother.

"That's what's going on now," Harold said. "Unfortunately that is apparently common when you don't know what's happening."

Harold says Goble has maintained a good relationship with her sons' father even after their divorce. Harold also says Goble's boyfriend has been very helpful with everything and has been very supportive.

Harold says Goble always calls her oldest son Jason when she plans to go out of town. He didn't hear from her last weekend.

Holding Out Hope
April 30, 2010
(Photo Gallery at Link/top of pg)

A picture of Kathy Goble stood at the front of Friday's vigil.

Yellow ribbons line the streets leading to Kelley's Mens Shop in Charleston. Those ribbons represent the hope that a missing store employee will return home unharmed.

On Friday night, people from around Kanawha County lit candles and prayed for the safe return of Kathy Goble.

Kathy has been missing since last Sunday. The following day investigators found her car abandoned on a section of Interstate 64 in Putnam County.

"You don't want to think of all the scenarios that could happen. You just want to think she will return safely," says Kristi Waldeck, Vice-President of Kelley's.

The store has placed pictures of Kathy in its front windows. The photos also have the contact number for the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department in case someone passing by knows some information about her disappearance. Kristi says she can't imagine why anybody would want to hurt her friend.

"She's a sweet lady, and she would never do anything to hurt anyone or anything that. She's also the type of person if someone would ask for her help, she would have helped them which may have lead to her disappearance," Kristi said.

Meanwhile, Kathy's two adult sons have been struggling with their mother's loss for the past week. Family friend Bill Harold has been speaking on behalf of the family as they continue to search for their mother.

"It doesn't matter whether she went off on her own or somebody decided to take her for some reason as long as she's able to make it home safely. That's what their hope is," Harold says.

Harold says the outpouring from the community in Kanawha County brings a little comfort during this time of need. Along with Friday night's vigil, community members have started a Facebook page where people can send notes of encouragement and prayer. So far, over 700 people have joined in support of Kathy and the family.

"They look at that and see every day that that many people are praying for their mother's safe return," Harold says.

If anyone knows any information about Kathy Goble's disappearance, please call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department at 304-357-0169.

The Kanawha County Sheriff's Department has released additional pictures of a missing Charleston woman.

The photos are taken from surveillance footage at the Southridge Wal-Mart in Kanawha County on April 24th.  The store was one of the last places 62-year old Kathy Goble was known to be and the photos show what she was wearing the last time she was seen.

Goble has been missing for almost two weeks now and her friends and family members say that is highly unusual.

There is evidence that what she purchased at Wal-Mart was taken to the nearby home of a friend.  No one knows what happened next at this point.

Goble's vehicle was later found along Interstate 64 in Putnam County.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department at 304-357-0200.

Charleston Woman Has Been Missing for a Month

Updated Monday, May 24, 2010; 07:07 PM

Family and friends wonder what happened to Kathy Goble.
Story by Nicky Walters

CHARLESTON -- It has been one month since Kathy Goble, 62, of Charleston went missing.
Goble's family and friends are hoping for new information.

But Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies say they have very few leads.
(Click here for a timeline of events leading up to Kathy Goble's disappearance. )

Most of the yellow ribbons that once lined the street across from Kelley's Men's Shop where Goble worked, are gone.

A single faded one remains. But Goble's co-workers are trying to stay hopeful.

Goble left work at Kelley's Mens Shop Saturday April 24 at 5 p.m.

"She left work on Saturday evening and told people about the plans she had and what she was going to do," said Kenneth Waldeck, the President of Kelley's Mens Shop.

From there, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department's investigation, Goble called a friend and visited a friend before heading to Wal-Mart to shop.

Surveillance video captured Goble arriving at 7:52 p.m. and leaving at 8:27 p.m.

"We know what she purchased and we know she took some of those items back to a friends house on Kenna Drive," said Lt. Sean Crosier with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

It was around 9 p.m. April 24 that Goble is said to have arrived at her friend's house on Kenna Drive.

"At that point we just do not know what happened," Lt. Crosier said.

According to the investigation there is a 9 hour period of time that investigators know very little about. The next morning two people reported seeing Goble's vehicle parked along Interstate 64 headed westbound just before the Crooked Creek exit.

"If we can determine what happened during those hours we know that can lead us to Kathy," Crosier said.

In the days that followed search dogs scoured the area where Goble's car was found. That search didn't find any new leads.

Meanwhile family and friends are using the internet for help as they search for clues. To see it and print a flyer about Kathy just click here.

If you have any information you are asked to call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department at 304-357-0169. You can remain anonymous.

Charleston Gazette (West Virginia)
August 24, 2010, Tuesday

INVESTIGATORS FRUSTRATED;
'Not forgotten:' Woman missing for 4 months;
Lack of leads has hindered investigation

Four months ago, she disappeared, seemingly without a trace.

While family and friends are still hoping for Shelia "Kathy" Goble's safe return, each passing day dims those hopes a little more.

"We're still hoping that she is found alive and well," said Kelley's Men Shop Vice President Kristie Waldeck. "As time goes on, that it is harder and harder. We are all just continuing to think and pray for her."

Goble, 62, left her job at Kelley's on the West Side, where she worked for 10 years, just after 5 p.m. Saturday, April 24. After leaving work, she went to the Southridge Centre Walmart and purchased a few items, which she brought to a home on Kenna Drive in South Charleston. She left about 8:30 p.m.

That's the last time she is known to have been seen.

Her silver Honda Pilot was found abandoned on the side of Interstate 64 near the Crooked Creek exit on April 26.

Months later, detectives still don't know what happened to Goble.

"We believe someone did something to her," said Lt. Sean Crosier with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department.

But at this point, investigators know little else about the case.

"It's extremely frustrating," Crosier said. "I think that is where a lot of our stress comes from. The family wants answers and rely on us for that, and we aren't able to produce."

Crosier said everyone involved in the case "has lost a lot of sleep just laying in bed thinking about what we can do and possible theories."

He said the unsolved case reminds him of something he learned in homicide class years ago.

"My instructor told us that if you know what happened and how it happened, that leads you to who did it," he said. "Well, we don't know what happened. We only know she disappeared."

And without much more insight, Crosier said "we just have a half a leg of a three-leg stool. That is not doing a whole lot for us to be able to go on and develop something."

But investigators aren't giving up. The West Virginia K-9 Search and Rescue team did a sweep in the area where her car was found and at Kenna Drive, but didn't find anything that could help the case.

"It's such a mysterious investigation," Crosier said. "It's been quite some time since we have gotten any good leads."

There are numerous possibilities investigators have considered, Crosier said, but "we haven't been able to come up with a very likely scenario of how she disappeared."

With her car being found in Putnam County, Crosier said, "we believe it almost had to be two people, not absolutely, but it's very likely two people were involved."

At the same time, "there are just so many strange things and unanswered questions."

Crosier said one theory is that Goble was kidnapped and is still being held. Another possible theory is that it was a robbery gone bad, but with no activity on her credit card or bank account, that doesn't seem as likely.

Waldeck admits it's frustrating that investigators have been "quiet lately" about the disappearance, but that she isn't giving up on her friend's safe return.

"I hope she is on a beach somewhere. And when she gets back, we'll all yell at her for making us worry," she said.

Although she knows it's far-fetched that Goble left the area of her own accord, she considers it with a little laugh.

"I'd rather be mad at her for doing this to us than have to mourn her," she said.

Since Goble's disappearance, Kelley's has downsized the store from 10,000 square feet to 5,000, closing down the place where the missing employee used to work.

Waldeck's 8-year-old daughter, who has been coming to work with her mom since she was just an infant, used to draw pictures for Goble, who tacked them above her desk with pride.

When Kelley's closed down that part of the store, Waldeck's daughter "made a box for the pictures that she made for Kathy and said she is going to keep them until she comes home."

In the meantime, detectives continue to work the case and go over the timeline of what happened, looking for holes or clues that may shed light it.

"It's cold, but not forgotten," Crosier said.

Anyone with information or ideas about the disappearance of Goble should call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department at 304-357-0169.

Missing woman's body found; co-worker charged

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A co-worker of a Kelley's Mens Shop employee who has been missing for two years was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder after police found human remains in his backyard.

Kanawha County sheriff's deputies arrested Charles Eugene March, 60, of Chesapeake, and charged him with the slaying of Sheila "Kathy" Goble after picking him up for questioning at the men's store, said Kanawha County Sheriff Mike Rutherford.

snip
Rutherford said March told deputies that he strangled Goble at his home and buried her in his yard behind his mobile home at 12736 Ohio Ave., in Chesapeake.

The sheriff said Wednesday that March had been questioned on three occasions since Goble's disappearance. However, "we had no hard evidence to go out and get a search warrant until today," he said.

According to a criminal complaint in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, March told Deputy B.K. Carper and Detective S.D. Snuffer that he strangled Goble the night she went missing, wrapped her body in a blanket and put it in the bathtub. The next day, he told deputies, he cut up her body and buried it in the back yard.

March's son called authorities Wednesday after finding what appeared to be human remains in a shallow grave at his father's home. Chesapeake police, West Virginia State Police troopers and sheriff's deputies went to the house at about 11:30 a.m.

At his arraignment Wednesday, March told Magistrate Ward Harshbarger that he did not want a court-appointed lawyer, and did not intend to hire his own. "I do not need an attorney, sir," he said.

Harshbarger had March fill out paperwork for a court-appointed lawyer anyway.
