I didn't see a thread for this young woman

(April 30) -- It was supposed to be a birthday party as well as a celebration to mark 25-year-old Phuong Le's successful completion of nursing school. Instead, Le's family held a candlelight vigil today, five days after she mysteriously disappeared.

At around 4 p.m. Sunday, Le left her family's home in Suisun City, Calif., and drove to a Barnes & Noble store in Fairfield where she liked to study. Police say she was last seen in the bookstore's cafe at around 8:30 p.m.

When Le didn't arrive home by midnight, her brother Huong Le went searching for her. In the bookstore parking lot he discovered her white 1997 Honda Accord, its back windows rolled down, with her purse, backpack, wallet and cell phone locked in the trunk

.Le FamilyNursing student Phuong Le was last seen at a Barnes & Noble store in Fairfield, Calif., on April 25. "We're really sure somebody strange passed by, saw her in the car and kidnapped her," her brother told ABC News. "That's the only way she is missing."

"The first thing that came to mind was that she got kidnapped," he told KCRA news.

On Wednesday, Fairfield police launched an official investigation into Le's disappearance. Her family, who are immigrants from Vietnam, have been doing everything they can to assist police: passing out fliers at the gym where Le regularly worked out, providing DNA samples and even starting a Facebook page to try to help generate tips on her whereabouts.

Though they try to keep hope alive, they say they believe something terrible has happened to Phuong Le.

"We're really sure somebody strange passed by, saw her in the car and kidnapped her," Dinh Le, another brother, told ABC News. "That's the only way she is missing."

At a press conference Thursday, Fairfield police said they do not know for certain whether Le was kidnapped or simply disappeared on her own.

"We're exploring both avenues. ... We're just trying to find her," Fairfield police Lt. Darrin Moody said.

Two weeks before her disappearance, Le had passed the NCLEX exam, clearing the way for her to get a nursing license, and had started looking for work.

At 7 p.m. today -- the day Le turned 25 -- family, friends and concerned residents met on the lawn at the Fairfield campus of Solano Community College, where she had been a student, and lit red candles in her honor. It was not the gathering they had hoped for.

Phuong Le is 5 foot 3, and weighs approximately 105 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with tips or information on her whereabouts can call Fairfield police at 707-428-7345.

FAIRFIELD, Calif. -- Worry intensified Friday night for a young nursing school graduate who disappeared from a mall in Fairfield five nights ago.

Friday was Phuong Le's 25th birthday, but about 100 friends and family members marked the occasion with a somber vigil at Solano Community College to keep her disappearance in the public eye.

FAIRFIELD, CA - Rather than lighting candles on her birthday cake, the family and friends of nursing student Bichphuong Le celebrated her 25th birthday Friday night lighting candles as part of a vigil hoping to bring the missing woman home a week after her mysterious disappearance.

Dozens gathered on the grounds of the Solano College campus Friday night, many former classmates of Le, who recently graduated from Solano College with a nursing degree.

"We love her. We love her and we want her home," former classmate Raina Lenzy said. "That's all we want."

Le left her house where she lives with her family around 5 p.m. last Sunday and was last seen inside a Fairfield Barnes and Noble bookstore nearby around 8:30 p.m., Fairfield police Lt. Darrin Moody said.

A family member found Le's car, a white Honda Civic, in the parking lot of the store Monday, and alerted authorities. Some of Le's personal items were found inside of the car.

Investigators said there have been no significant leads involving anyone who might have wanted to harm Le family and friends did not think she was involved with any boyfriends.

Family members at Friday's vigil that they hoped the show of support would help generate some information that could bring Le home.

"I believe Phuong is somewhere out there, needing help," brother Huong Le said. "So please, everyone, let's not lose your hope."

FAIRFIELD, CA - Fairfield and Suisun city police are searching for a missing 24-year-old nursing student they say has not been seen since Sunday, April 25.

Officers are looking for Bichphuong "Phuong" Le, 24, last seen inside a Fairfield Barnes and Noble bookstore around 8:30 p.m., according to Fairfield police Lt. Darrin Moody.

A family member found Le's car, a white Honda Civic, in the parking lot of the store Monday, and alerted authorities, said Fairfield police Sgt. Jeff Osgood. Some of Le's personal items were found inside of the car.

"We've spent through the night tracking her steps through phone records and where she was in the last 24 hours before she disappeared," said Moody on Wednesday.

Moody added,"We're trying to fixate ourselves on the same routine she had, so we were here yesterday (around the Barnes and Noble) at about the same time, passing out flyers to people who come and go on a regular basis."

The missing woman's brother, Huong Le, said there had been a family argument involving his sister but it wasn't enough to make her disappear.

"This is a lot more than just getting mad and getting away. It's something pretty serious," said Le.

He said his sister's car was found  unlocked with the two rear windows open.

"The first thing that came to my mind was she got kidnapped," said Le.

Bichphuong Le recently graduated from Solano Community College after studying nursing and was looking for a job.

She was described as 5 feet 3 inches tall, and weighing about 105 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.

If you have seen Le, or have any information about her whereabouts, call the Fairfield Police Department at (707) 428-7600.

Nor. Calif. Cops Search For Missing Nurse

When Phuong Le left her house on April 25, 2010, the newly registered nurse headed to one of her favorite places -- her local Barnes and Noble bookstore. As a nursing student, Phuong often studied or hung out at the location near her home in Fairfield, Calif., a town roughly 20 miles outside San Francisco.

Family members say Phuong had finished nursing school in December, had just passed her oral exams in recent weeks and was trying to find work.

However, authorities in Fairfield have been trying to figure out where Phuong went next since her favorite spot is now the last place she was seen.

When Phuong didn't return home that night, family members reported her missing. Her brother knew exactly where to look and headed to the store and found her 1997 Honda Accord parked in the parking lot.

Phuong's car looked as it usually did -- her rear windows were often rolled down since the front windows had stopped working. When investigators opened the trunk, they found all of Phuong's personal effects -- her cell phone, her wallet, her purse -- all locked inside.

Police immediately searched the surrounding areas and interviewed Barnes and Nobles customers. One witness remembered seeing Phuong that evening around 8:30 p.m. at the store's coffee shop. That remains Phuong's last reported sighting.

Fairfield Police are asking for the public's help. If you have any information about the whereabouts of Phuong Le, please call our Hotline at 1-800-CRIME-TV.

Search goes on for missing Suisun woman
April 30, 2010

Phuong Le's family will celebrate her 25th birthday today, several days after the would-be nurse vanished into the night.

"She always returned before 12 (a.m.)," brother Dinh Le, 31, said when he described her standard routine of going to 24 Hour Fitness, then to the Barnes & Noble coffee shop across the street.

Both are near Westfield Shoppingtown Solano in Fairfield.

But Phuong Le did not come back Sunday night, and investigators and family members have been frantically searching for the woman ever since.

It is unclear whether Le, a Suisun City resident, was kidnapped or left on her own, Fairfield police Lt. Darrin Moody said.

"We're exploring both avenues. ... We're just trying to find her," Moody said Thursday during a press conference outside Fairfield City Hall.

Moody vowed the department would continue to look for Le "until she's found."

The Suisun City Police Department is also investigating the case, Suisun Chief Ed Dadisho said.

Le left her family home at about 4 p.m. Sunday without telling anyone where she was going. Her car was discovered in the Barnes & Noble parking lot Monday with its back windows rolled down and her backpack, purse, wallet, money, ID and cell phone locked in the trunk. The car keys were not found.

Le is 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs about 105 pounds and has brown eyes and black hair.

Friends and family describe a driven woman who nonetheless was full of heart. Two weeks ago, she passed the brutal NCLEX test that allowed her to get her nursing license.

"She was really happy for that," Dinh Le said with a smile.

The youngest of eight children, Le had always wanted to be a nurse and was strongly focused on her career, her brother said.

She had just submitted an application to NorthBay Medical Center and had asked Tracy Fields for a recommendation. Fields was Le's former instructor at Solano Community College.

"Nurses are all having trouble finding jobs, so they're discouraged," Fields said, though nothing of Le's behavior indicated she was depressed or unhappy.

Indeed, though she studied hard to pass the NCLEX, Le remained relaxed, her brother said.

Le is a native of Vietnam and immigrated to the United States about 14 years ago.

Friends and family will hold a birthday vigil for Le today at 7 p.m. on the front lawn of the SCC Fairfield campus, 4000 Suisun Vallejo Road. Anyone with information about the case can call a special Fairfield Police Department tip line at 428-7345 or leave an anonymous tip at 644-STOP.

Investigators Secure DNA, Seize More Items in Search for Missing California Nurse
April 29, 2010

The search is still on for a missing Fairfield, California nursing student, 24-year-old Phoung Le, vanishing without a trace Sunday night from a local Barnes & Noble bookstore. We learn, the family was called to the police station for questioning last night and DNA samples were taken from the parents.

According to Le’s brother, he called Suisun City police around 3:30a.m. the Monday following his sister’s disappearance after discovering her car in the Barnes & Noble parking lot. Huong Le says Suisun police checked the scene but were called to another emergency, telling him to lock up Le’s car and take her backpack home.

Moments ago at a news conference, Fairfield and Suisun police, who are now both actively working the investigation, announce they have cleared up a communication gap between the family and investigators. Detectives have not identified anyone who would want to hurt Le and say there is no indication of foul play at this time, but are still exploring the option that something terrible happened to the young nurse.

They also allegedly did not impound Le’s 1997 white Honda Accord until Tuesday
. Investigators have combed over Le’s bedroom and purse taking credit cards, a digital camera, her passport and social security card. They are also looking at her computer and cell phone records. A vigil is set for tomorrow night at 7p.m. at the Solano College Fairfield campus where Le just graduated nursing school. Friends and family say she was excited about passing her boards and looking for a job at a hospital and say she would never just up and leave. So what happened to 24-year-old Phoung Le?

Search for Missing Woman Continues
Saturday, May 1, 2010

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (KCBS/AP)  -- Detectives in Fairfield and neighboring Suisun City are looking for leads, as the search for a woman who would have been celebrating her 25th birthday Friday continues.

Police said Phuong Le disappeared sometime after leaving her home in Suisun City Sunday afternoon.

Her car, along with some personal items, were found outside a Barnes and Nobles bookstore Monday morning.

Investigators have determined she was in the store around 8:30 p.m. Sunday night.

Her family said she recently passed a nurses licensing exam and often went to the bookstore to study.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people turned out to attend a candlelight vigil in Fairfield Friday night, including members of the Solano Community College Nursing Club.

Investigators from the Suisun and Fairfield police departments said they are not aware of anyone who might want to harm the young woman and don’t know if she was taken or if she disappeared on her own.

Fairfield police have set up a tip line at (707) 428-7345 for anyone with information about the case.

A nationwide missing persons alert has also been issued and the FBI is involved in the investigation.

The news here has been showing this story. Strange, one witness the last one to see her is a waiter (I think) at a near by business. He says she was there sitting in her usual place one minute and the next was gone. I found the statement, "her usual place" odd. I wonder if someone had been stalking her.

Phuong Le search moves outside Fairfield, Suisun City

FAIRFIELD, CA - Frustrated family and friends of Phuong Le fanned out across the Fairfield and Suisun City areas Saturday, searching for any sign of the missing 25-year-old nursing school graduate who disappeared last weekend.

After days of focusing their search in and around the area near a Fairfield Barnes and Nobles store were Le was last seen last Sunday night, a handful of volunteers walked the remote marshlands of the Grizzly Island Wildlife area outside Suisun City Saturday.

Le's brother Huong Le said looking around the heavy brush and soggy marshes near Grizzly Island isn't pleasant, but few leads in Le's disappearance, it's important for searchers to look even in places they hope Le is not.

"If we find her out here, that means she is probably not alive," Le said. "It's just rougher every day."

"When you're in a secluded area, you think it's a horrible thing you are going to find out here," volunteer Jennifer Caswell said. "I dont' want to think that way. Anything you can find to bring someone home helps."

In addition to the Grizzly Island search, others continued passing out flyers near the Gateway Drive shopping plaza where Le was last seen around 8:30 p.m. April 25.

Le left her family's Suisun City house around 5 p.m. last Sunday to go to the bookstore, where she often spent time reading or studying.

A family member found Le's unlocked car, a white Honda Civic, in the parking lot of the store Monday, and alerted authorities. Some of Le's personal items, including her purse and cell phone, were found inside of the car.

Investigators said there is no indication that anyone wanted to harm Le and friends did not think she was involved with any boyfriends.

The search was expected to continue in rural areas around Fairfield and Suisun City Sunday.

They appear to be Vietnamese.  I worked with a Vietnamese gal who's family arranged a marriage for her because she was 25 and unmarried.  She is married now to a man she dislikes has 2 children and is very unhappy.

I'm hoping that Phoung has run off although it doesn't look like the case

(snipped)

A witness inside the store told police he saw her sitting down reading a book and she did not appear to be stressed. She usually went there to study and read books; however, Fairfield Police say they have gone over surveillance footage from the bookstore and it does not show Puong.

(snipped)

Who is this witness?  Surveillance footage doesn't show her in the bookstore but the witness claims he/she saw her?  Has this witness been stocking her?  Does this witness work at the bookstore?

We have a very large Vietnamese population where I work and used to live in San Jose CA.
They are wonderful people. I too have seen the same situation as Klaasend. But there is other things happening within that culture.. Gangs for instance.. and this girl is 25 and so she is not of the OLD generation.. She is American, born and raised.. I noticed she holds a dog. The old generation did not have dogs as pets. Almost anyone could have nabbed her and it is not necessarily cultural especially the area she was taken from in my opinion.
